Punxsutawney Phil celebrating first Groundhog Day as a father

CBS News29-01-2025

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (KDKA) -- This Sunday, Feb. 2, all eyes will turn to Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, as the world's most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, will emerge for his annual prognostication.
Over 40,000 people are expected for this year's festivities. Will Phil see his shadow, thus predicting six more weeks of winter?
"If you go by statistics and history, about 80% of the time it's, 'My shadow I see, so six more weeks of winter it will be,'" said Thomas A. Dunkel, the president of Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. "But you never know. In the last 10 years, we've had more 'no shadows' than we have had in any 10-year period of the Groundhog Club."
So, we won't know until Sunday around 7:25 a.m. if we should expect an early spring or more cold winter days.
This year, we can expect a family affair because this will be Phil's first Groundhog Day as a father. Last spring, Phil and his wife Phyllis welcomed pups Sunny and Shadow to their family.
"When I talk to Phil with the cane, he's very proud of his two kids and they are super proud of dad," said Dunkel. "Not everybody has the world's most famous father."
Phil is allegedly 139 years old and has lived in Punxsutawney since the first Grover Cleveland administration. He gets his longevity by drinking a secret elixir of life each summer. Sadly, only Phil can drink this magical, life-giving brew, and Phyllis, Sunny, and Shadow will all face a mortal groundhog existence.
"There's only one Punxsutawney Phil," Dunkel said. "That's the problem with being an immortal. You outlive the family, I'm afraid. And that is one of the downsides of living forever."
If you want to see the whole family together this year, and Phil make his legendary prediction, the event in Punxsutawney is free and open to the public. Arriving early and dressing warmly is strongly advised.

Periods of rain and storms with some localized flooding possible in Pittsburgh this weekend

Parts of Western Pennsylvania received some very heavy rain through the overnight hours. A swath of 1-4+" occurred from areas near Plum to Vandergrift to Indiana, which resulted in a Flash Flood Warning being issued in those areas during the overnight hours. There was also a maximum of heavy rain with radar estimates of 1-3" around the New Castle area. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos This morning, a stalled frontal boundary continues to remain in place across Western Pennsylvania, with the boundary draped between I-70 and HW 422. A weak low-level wind just above the surface continues to transport rich moisture into the frontal zone, resulting in rising air and waves of showers and thunderstorms. Flood watch in place for areas in Western Pennsylvania KDKA Weather Center For Saturday morning through early afternoon, we expect a numerous to widespread coverage of rain and storms from roughly the Pittsburgh metro area north toward I-80. After 12-1 p.m., the coverage for areas north of Pittsburgh will start to slowly diminish, with more scattered storms developing south of Pittsburgh toward I-70 & I-68. Timing and coverage of rain in our region on Saturday through Sunday KDKA Weather Center Any of these cells will produce locally heavy rainfall with the potential for flash flooding. As of now, high-resolution modeling suggests a zone of 1-3" occurring between Pittsburgh and I-80 through early Saturday afternoon. This zone could shift depending on storm behavior, and if the front shifts slightly, but folks should be on the lookout for flash flooding. A Flood Watch is in effect until 4 p.m. for Clarion, Venango, Forest, and Jefferson counties. High temperatures and rain chances for Sunday, June 15, 2025 KDKA Weather Center For Saturday night into Sunday, the best chance of rain and storms will start to shift toward our southern counties. There will likely be some patchy fog on Sunday morning as well. By midday Sunday into Sunday afternoon, the best chance for rain will likely align from Pittsburgh and points south toward our I-70 and I-68 counties. Rainfall expected through Sunday evening KDKA Weather Center Coverage will be more scattered on Sunday compared to Saturday, so not everyone will see rain, but those that do could easily receive a quick 1-2" with the potential of localized flooding. Rain and storm chances will be lowest next Monday and Tuesday as we won't have much of a strong trigger or source of lift in our area. Isolated showers and storms will develop during the heat of the day. However, models are suggesting we move into a pattern by mid-late next week that will deliver a stronger jet stream punch and a trough of low pressure by Wednesday and Thursday. This will amp up rain chances once again, and possibly a few strong to severe storms. A push of drier air will move in from the northwest toward the end of the week, bringing an end to the heavy rain potential. 7-day forecast: June 14, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!

Rain and storm chances return to the Pittsburgh area with flooding possible

Rain chances return to the area today, with flooding overnight tonight being the biggest concern at this point. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos This morning should be dry, with scattered rain chances starting as soon as 1 p.m. More widespread rain is set to arrive around sunset, with rain continuing through the overnight hours. Flash flood guidance shows flash flooding possible with just over an inch and a half of rain falling over a six-hour time period. When we could see rain, and how much we could be in for KDKA Weather Center Certainly possible tonight. Three-hour guidance shows similar numbers needed for flash flooding, with one-hour guidance showing around an inch and a quarter of rain needed. When it comes to folks outside, including many out in Oakmont for the US Open, there's a good chance that you are dry through at least 5 this afternoon. Rain chances do look to be highest north of Pittsburgh before then. The Open and other events may be impacted by lightning being too close. I know the PGA has a team of meteorologists on it and will be ready to issue early warnings to ensure everyone's safety. Areas where we could see excessive rain on Friday KDKA Weather Center Rain could also have an impact on high temperatures today. Yesterday we hit 85° for the high. I see temperatures very close to that today. I am forecasting a high of 84° in Pittsburgh. If we catch a stray scattered storm at the right time, though our highs may be lower than that. Conditions in the Pittsburgh area on Friday KDKA Weather Center No matter what, it is going to be humid. Dew points are in the low to mid-60s, and that's where they will remain through at least Monday. That puts the comfort level in the poor range for today and the entire weekend. Looking at the rest of the weekend, a weak boundary will remain draped over us through Monday. Where the boundary goes, rain chances will follow. At this point, it appears the boundary will remain over I-80 for most of the weekend, but at times will push as far south as I-70. Highs on both Saturday and Sunday will be in the mid to upper 70s, but it will remain humid. I'd suggest keeping the A/C units on. 7-day forecast: June 13, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!
