Heavy rain spills into the week, IMD issues orange alert till Tuesday
The heavy rainfall along the Konkan coast is the result of a low pressure area over the bay of Bengal and the formation of an east-west trough over the Arabian sea. As per the IMD's forecast and alerts, the rain will spill over into the week.
The forecast comes a day after several pockets of the city recorded more than 100m of rainfall. As of 8:30 am on Sunday, the Santacruz station recorded 85 mm of rainfall, while the Colaba station recorded 55 mm. On Saturday, the Santacruz station had received 245mm of rainfall.
The heavy rainfall on Friday night and early Saturday morning had also led to a landslide in Vikhroli and claimed the lives of two people living in the landslide-prone area.
As per the Brihanmumbai municipal corporation's (BMC) automatic weather station, between 8am to 6pm, the island city and eastern suburbs had 23.81mm and 25.01mm of rainfall respectively whereas western suburbs logged only 18.47mm of rain. In the eastern suburbs, the Mulund fire station saw the maximum rainfall of 45mm, in the island city, AWS at Worli logged 43mm, while in western suburbs Bandra-kurla complex logged 35mm.
The neighbouring districts of Mumbai such as Thane and Palghar were also placed under orange alert for the next three days. Ratnagiri is under red alert (severe weather with life-threatening conditions) on Monday while Raigad is placed under yellow alert (a moderate risk of adverse weather conditions).

Sudden showers, gusty winds bring relief to scorching Indore, heavy rain likely
Indore: Sudden showers accompanied by strong winds on Monday afternoon brought much-needed relief from humidity to Indoreans. Around 12:30 pm, dark clouds gathered over the skies, followed by a spell of rain accompanied by strong winds that lasted nearly half an hour. Though the downpour eased, cloudy skies lingered before sunshine broke through briefly. Within an hour, however, the city was again covered in dark clouds, leading to continuous rainfall until about 4 pm. The Met department recorded 17.25 mm of rainfall within half an hour from 12:30 pm to 1 pm and 28 mm of rainfall till 5:30 pm. Indore has so far recorded 14 inches (352.8 mm) of rainfall this season, well below the usual 21 inches (533 mm) expected by mid-August. Weatherman, however, expect a turnaround in the coming days. "A system over Odisha and an active monsoon trough across Malwa-Nimar are likely to bring good rainfall for the next four to five days," said Dr Divya Surendran, Met scientist from IMD Bhopal. She added that multiple synoptic systems, including a developing low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, are expected to sustain the wet spell. The IMD has also forecast heavy rain, gusty winds, and thunder at isolated places across Madhya Pradesh, particularly Burhanpur, Khandwa, Khargone, Barwani, and Alirajpur on Tuesday. With the second half of August forecast to be wetter, experts believe many districts could complete their rainfall quota within the month. BMC conducts patchwork repairs on battered stretches in Salt Lake
1 2 Kolkata: Cashing in on the dry spell, BMC has started conducting patchwork on the damaged road stretches in Salt Lake, which were battered due to the recent heavy rain. On Monday, civic authorities conducted patchwork on the stretch connecting Purta Bhavan to the CGO Complex crossing. "Repair work will be conducted on all damaged roads before Durga Puja ," said an official. Large craters and potholes have developed on several stretches of the avenue and crossroads in Salt Lake. Many of the stretches were repaired earlier this year. Not only the main thoroughfares, but the condition of roads inside some of the blocks is also in a dismal state, with no repairs taken up for years. Civic officials said they will also talk to the contractors about why road surfaces are getting damaged within a few months of being repaired. "There are three to four years of agreements with the contractors who are engaged for road repairs. They will be asked to do the needful," said an official.
