Renowned opera singer Nomusa Yende to feature in 8th annual Joburg Choral Festival
The event will take place on May 11 at the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein.
Nomusa, also known as Sasa, has been in the industry for almost a decade, and has performed throughout the country, the Sadc region and Mississippi in the US.
She said the audience can expect a journey through different emotional worlds.
'I've chosen three contrasting arias that each reveal a different facet of the human experience — passion, vulnerability, and joy. My goal is to fully inhabit each piece, not only vocally but emotionally so the audience feels every shift in mood and character. It's about storytelling through music, and I want each aria to feel like its own little universe,' she said.
Sasa is busy with the South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod.
'This is the season for schools competitions. I am adjudicating from province to province and working with a few choirs in preparation for the competition. I am also busy with preparations for the 8th annual Joburg Choral Festival, and preparations for international singing competitions which I cannot disclose.'

In a move that blends celebration with empowerment, SAMRO will sponsor the Songwriter of the Year category, an award that recognises lyrical brilliance, originality, and the often-unseen creatives behind the hits that shape the nation's soundtrack. Set to take place at the Joburg Theatre on August 1 and 2, the Basadi in Music Awards have become a flagship platform for honouring the contributions of women in all facets of the music industry from performance and production to songwriting and executive leadership. South Africa celebrates Women's Month every year in August, to pay tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956, to protest against the pass laws. Speaking on the importance of the partnership with Basadi in Music Awards, Kgomotso Mosenogi, SAMRO's general manager for marketing and communications, said the initiative aligns with SAMRO's ongoing efforts to transform the music landscape and promote gender equity. "Women have long been the heartbeat of our music industry, often writing the stories of our nation behind the scenes. Supporting the Basadi in Music Awards is not just symbolic—it's a tangible investment in gender equity, recognition, and creative excellence,' said Mosenogi. This year's sponsorship marks the fourth consecutive year that SAMRO has backed the initiative. Beyond financial support, SAMRO has also played a proactive role in capacity building. In 2024, the organisation hosted a series of empowerment workshops targeting women in music. 'In 2021, we commissioned a research report titled Women's Rights and Representation in the South African Music Sector. The findings were eye-opening—highlighting the underrepresentation of women in decision-making roles and the need for deliberate action to ensure inclusivity,' she said. The partnership with Basadi in Music, according to Mosenogi, was part of a broader call to action. It's not only about awards, it's about opening doors, shifting narratives, and creating a future where women's contributions to music are equally acknowledged, supported, and celebrated. Laconco among big winners at Basadi in Music Vanguard Awards
The Vanguard Awards recognise women in often-overlooked roles. The fourth annual Basadi in Music awards commenced with the Vanguard Awards on Friday, 1 August, in a dazzling opening night at the Joburg Theatre. The Vanguard Awards recognise women in often-overlooked roles – from managers and producers to stylists and other creatives who drive the industry's success stories. Among the night's big winners were popular media personalities Laconco, who walked away with podcast presenter of the year, and Lootlove, who scooped entertainment radio presenter of the year. Radio host and producer Relebogile Mabotja was named entertainment TV producer of the year. The ceremony was brought to life with soul-stirring performances by Moneoa and Zama Jobe, followed by a high-energy hip-hop medley featuring Dyna Steez, Moozlie, Rouge and Nadia Nakai. The evening concluded with a soulful set by Babalwa M. Bongi 'Sis Bongi' Mlotshwa was named trailblazer of the year for over three decades of excellence in beauty and television. Basadi in Music CEO Hloni Modise-Matau highlighted the growth of the awards, noting it reflects the rising influence of women in all corners of the industry, from the stage to boardrooms, studios and behind the scenes creative spaces. 'What began as a single night of recognition has grown into a two-day celebration of women's excellence in music and entertainment,' she said. 'Tonight we honoured the women whose work often goes unseen but is vital to the success of the artists and the industry. Basadi in Music exists to spotlight their talent, their dedication and the powerful role they play in shaping South Africa's music landscape.' The festivities continue this evening, Saturday 2 August, with the spotlight shifting to the artists themselves at the main Music Awards ceremony, also taking place at the Joburg Theatre.
