Thailand tightens border controls for tourists after Cambodia clash
Thailand tightens border controls for tourists after Cambodia clash (AP) BANGKOK: Thailand temporarily closed its biggest border crossing with Cambodia to local tourists on Saturday after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a recent military clash between the two uneasy neighbours. There has been sporadic violence on the Thai-Cambodia frontier since fighting first broke out in 2008, resulting in at least 28 deaths. A Cambodian soldier was killed in the most recent outbreak on May 28 in an area known as the Emerald Triangle, where the borders of Cambodia, Thailand and Laos meet. The Thai and Cambodian militaries agreed to ease tensions the following day but Cambodia then said it would keep its troops in the area, despite Thailand urging it to withdraw. The Royal Thai Army took control of the "opening and closing" of all border crossings it shares with Cambodia on Saturday, citing a "threat to Thailand's sovereignty and security". The 1st Army Region banned the passage of six-wheeled trucks and reduced the operating hours of the border crossing between Aranyaprathet in Thailand's southeast and Poipet in Cambodia's west. It said in a statement on Saturday that Thais and Cambodians would only be allowed to cross for work and trade purposes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The Aranyaprathet-Poipet border crossing sees the most land traffic between the two countries with several thousand people using it each day, many of them Thais going to gamble at casinos on the Cambodian side. The Royal Thai Army told AFP that the restrictions only applied to citizens of the two countries but that implementation "may vary from place to place". Six other border checkpoints tightened their opening hours and issued bans on six-wheeled vehicles. The Thai army said trade remained unaffected and Cambodian workers were still permitted to enter Thailand. Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Phumtham Wechayachai said in a statement on Saturday it was "deeply regrettable" that Cambodia had "rejected" the proposal to withdraw its armed forces after the May 28 incident. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Monday the kingdom would file a complaint with the International Court of Justice over the border dispute. Thai authorities said a Joint Boundary Committee would meet next week to resolve the issue.

Ahead of Rath Yatra, Puri's Jagannath Temple launches official app: Here's everything you can check
In a landmark blend of spirituality and technology, the Puri district administration has launched the Shree Jagannatha Dham mobile app, ushering in a new era for devotees visiting the sacred 12th-century Jagannath Temple. As religious tourism embraces digital ease, the app is designed to simplify pilgrimages by offering real-time updates, ritual schedules, and navigation tools that help devotees experience the sanctity of Puri with greater clarity and comfort. The app, unveiled by Puri Collector and District Magistrate Siddharth Shankar Swain on Friday, comes just in time for the Rath Yatra preparations. Announcing the launch on X (formerly Twitter), Swain wrote, 'Jai Jagannath. A New App, Shree Jagannatha Dham, has been launched for the facilitation of Devotees. The services include—exact Niti status & timings, tentative waiting time at queues, arrangements for Rath Yatra and all special occasions.' — dm_puri (@dm_puri) by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Knee Pain Knee pain | search ads Find Now Undo About the App Swain explained that the name Jagannatha Dham was a deliberate choice, reflecting the deep-rooted sentiment that Puri is the original and most revered of India's char dhams. In an interview with TOI, he revealed that the app name was chosen because Puri represents the genuine Jagannatha Dham. The app promises to elevate the spiritual experience for pilgrims, particularly during major events like Rath Yatra. It provides details on daily ritual schedules, real-time waiting durations for temple queues, and logistical arrangements for major festivals. Swain assured that the app will not be limited to the festival season—it will function year-round as a comprehensive digital companion for tourists and devotees. Looking ahead, the district administration plans to roll out more features, including a grievance redressal section, GPS-enabled navigation to temples and public facilities, darshan schedules, Mahaprasad availability, and information on donations. The app will also help users discover nearby religious landmarks and suitable accommodation options. Users can also find the directions for their 4-wheeler and 2-wheeler parking places on the app under the tab 'Parking'.

Consumer court asks rlys to pay 2.3L to Behala family for delay
1 2 3 Kolkata: The state consumer disputes redressal commission ordered railway authorities to compensate Rs 1 lakh in addition to the cost of air fares to Raghunath Chakraborty, a Behala resident, whose 12-member family missed their Kolkata-bound flight from Delhi due to the delayed Kerala Sampark Kranti Express. They had to purchase new flight tickets for Rs 1,38,281. The bench with Ajeya Matilal and Nityasundar Trivedi instructed the railway board chairman and Northern Railway GM to pay Rs 1 lakh compensation and reimburse Rs 1.3 lakh, and also cover litigation costs of Rs 10,000. On June 14, 2017, Chakraborty's family travelled from Chandigarh to Delhi to catch their 5.50 pm Jet Airways flight to Kolkata. They boarded the 9 am train from Chandigarh, scheduled to reach Delhi by 1.20 pm. However, the Kerala Sampark Kranti Express arrived at Delhi at 5 pm, causing them to miss their flight. Subsequently, they booked Indigo airline tickets costing Rs 1.3 lakh. In their appeal, the family said they had no choice but to purchase last-minute flight tickets. Though they filed a plaint in the district forum citing service deficiency, it was rejected. Railways defended the delay, citing track welding work for passenger safety. Citing an SC verdict, it determined service deficiency and held railways liable for compensation, stating: "Citizens/passengers cannot be at the mercy of the authorities. Somebody has to accept responsibility." The court rejected the safety-related excuse and advised that routine track maintenance should be organised to prevent delays and passenger inconvenience.
