Sebi claims Sanjiv Bhasin 'kingpin' in front-running case
'It's fairly a gross case... The appellant (Sanjiv Bhasin) is perhaps tactically the actual kingpin and mastermind behind the whole thing,' Shiraz Rustomjee, senior counsel for Sebi, said during a hearing in the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT).
After the hearing, the tribunal directed Bhasin to deposit ₹ 1 crore in favour of Sebi. 'In our view, the end of justice would be met by directing the appellant (Bhasin) to deposit a sum of ₹ 1 crore in a fixed deposit with lien mark in favour of Sebi,' the SAT bench said in its order.
Sebi's comment follows a petition filed by Sanjiv Bhasin in the SAT challenging the market regulator's 17 June order that alleged that Bhasin was involved in front-running and stock manipulation.
Front-running refers to trading of stock or any other financial asset by a broker who has insider knowledge of a future transaction that is about to affect its price.
The market regulator, in its order, held that Bhasin first bought the securities himself and later recommended them to the public on news channels, including Zee Business, ET Now, and IIFL's Telegram channel, in violation of Sebi's Research Analyst Regulations.
The Sebi had ordered the freezing of Bhasin's bank accounts and securities and directed him, along with others, to jointly and severally impound alleged gains of ₹ 11.7 crore—an amount Bhasin claimed was 'unsustainable' and has caused significant financial hardship.
Bhasin, along with his cousin Lalit Bhasin other entities, were also barred from accessing capital markets.
Vikram Nankani, appearing for Sanjiv Bhasin, denying the allegations, said, 'How they have gone about calculating this figure, which is completely based on imagination. This (deposit amount) ₹ 11.37 crores has really no basis.'
Bhasin, in his 28-page plea, argued that he received no direct monetary benefit and that no funds flowed into his account from the transactions in question.
He termed the Sebi order 'excessive, disproportionate and based on erroneous computation,' stating that some profits included in SEBI's calculation were from stocks neither recommended nor traded with the alleged intent.
The case is part of Sebi's broader crackdown on media-linked market manipulation and financial advice driven by undisclosed conflicts of interest.

It said the strikes also hit a company, Elektropribor, in Russia's southern Penza region, which it said "works for the Russian military-industrial complex", making military digital networks, aviation devices, armoured vehicles and ships. The governor for the Penza region, Oleg Melnichenko, said on Telegram that one woman had been killed and two other people were wounded in that attack. Russia's defence ministry said its air-defence systems had destroyed 112 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory -- 34 over the Rostov region -- in a nearly nine-hour period, from Friday night to Saturday morning. Heavy use of drones Ukraine has regularly used drones to hit targets inside Russia as it fights back against Moscow's full-scale invasion, launched in February 2022. Russia, too, has increasingly deployed the unmanned aerial devices as part of its offensive. An AFP analysis published on Friday showed that Russia's forces in July launched an unprecedented number of drones, 6,297 of them. The figure included decoy drones sent into Ukraine's skies in efforts to saturate the country's air-defence systems. In Ukraine's central-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian drone attacks Friday night wounded three people, governor Sergiy Lysak wrote on Telegram. Several buildings, homes and cars were damaged, he said. Russian forces have claimed advances in Dnipropetrovsk, recently announcing the capture of two villages there, part of Moscow's accelerated capture of territory in July, according to AFP's analysis of data from the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Kyiv denies any Russian presence in the Dnipropetrovsk area. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has consistently rejected calls for a ceasefire in the more than three-year conflict, said Friday that he wanted peace but that his demands for ending Moscow's military offensive were "unchanged". Those demands include that Ukraine abandon territory and end ambitions to join NATO. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, said only Putin could end the war and renewed his call for a meeting between the two leaders. "The United States has proposed this. Ukraine has supported it. What is needed is Russia's readiness," he wrote on X.

6 held for arson at coal projects in Latehar
Daltonganj: The police on Saturday said it arrested six accomplices of Rahul Dubey, an aide of slain gangster Aman Sahu, for carrying out arsons in two coal sidings and a colliery in Latehar district last month. Latehar SP Kumar Gaurav said the men were involved in the cases of arson at Phulbasiya coal siding in Baatiyatu police station limits on July 5, torching vehicles at Tori coal siding under Chandwa police station on July 9 and a similar incident in Magadh coal project on July 18 under Balumath police station limits to extort money from contractors. Among the arrested, one is a resident of Ranchi while three others are from Latehar. Two others are Hazaribag residents, Gaurav said. "They used to communicate with Dubey through Telegram," he added. All of them are in their late twenties. One 7.65 mm pistol, five rounds of cartridges, bikes and six mobile phones were seized from them, the police said. One was arrested from Ranchi while five others were nabbed from various parts of Latehar district. Ukraine Uncovers Major Drone Procurement Corruption Scheme
Kyiv: Ukraine's anti-corruption bodies said on Saturday they had uncovered a major graft scheme that procured military drones and signal jamming systems at inflated prices, two days after the agencies' independence was restored following major protests. The independence of Ukraine's anti-graft investigators and prosecutors, NABU and SAPO, was reinstated by parliament on Thursday after a move to take it away resulted in the country's biggest demonstrations since Russia's invasion in 2022. In a statement published by both agencies on social media, NABU and SAPO said they had caught a sitting lawmaker, two local officials and an unspecified number of national guard personnel taking bribes. None of them were identified in the statement. "The essence of the scheme was to conclude state contracts with supplier companies at deliberately inflated prices," it said, adding that the offenders had received kickbacks of up to 30% of a contract's cost. Four people had been arrested. "There can only be zero tolerance for corruption, clear teamwork to expose corruption and, as a result, a just sentence," President Volodymyr Zelenskiy wrote on Telegram. Zelenskiy, who has far-reaching wartime presidential powers and still enjoys broad approval among Ukrainians, was forced into a rare political about-face when his attempt to bring NABU and SAPO under the control of his prosecutor-general sparked the first nationwide protests of the war. Zelenskiy subsequently said that he had heard the people's anger and submitted a bill restoring the agencies' former independence, which was voted through by parliament on Thursday. Ukraine's European allies praised the move, having voiced concerns about the original stripping of the agencies' status. Top European officials had told Zelenskiy that Ukraine was jeopardising its bid for European Union membership by curbing the powers of its anti-graft authorities. "It is important that anti-corruption institutions operate independently, and the law adopted on Thursday guarantees them every opportunity for a real fight against corruption," Zelenskiy wrote on Saturday after meeting the heads of the agencies, who briefed him on the latest investigation.
