Tom Izzo explains the first place he looks at when he goes into the transfer portal
When Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo speaks, you should listen. That is probably even more true if you are a basketball coach. This week, Tom Izzo was a featured guest at the Larry Shyatt coaching clinic, and on Wednesday, he gave some insight into his philosophy around the transfer portal with Michigan State basketball. 'When I go in the portal, the first place I go is to my locker room. I want to keep most of the guys on my team.' This quote, which was captured by Jeff Goodman, gives some good insight into how Izzo has ran his program in East Lansing since the advent of the so-called 'transfer portal era' in 2021. Since 2021, the Spartans have only had seven players transfer out of the program, which is tied for first in the Big Ten. Izzo is known as a transfer portal hater, but he has also shown a willingness to go into the portal to get players like Frankie Fidler, Tyson Walker, Szymon Zapala, and more. It just seems like the first consideration he makes is not upsetting what he already has in the locker room, which includes a group of players he recruited and believes in. MSU hoops' Tom Izzo feels he's 'adjusted to this new era' of college basketball
Tom Izzo: 'I've adjusted to this new era more than I think. Sure, there have been some rough spots. But players are the most important thing to me.' The college basketball world is ever changing, and Spartans head coach Tom Izzo believes he's adjusted more than many believe. Izzo was speaking at the Larry Shyatt's coaching clinic on Wednesday, where he addressed a number of items in the world of college basketball. One of which was the ever changing nature of the college basketball landscape and how he's been forced to change his philosophy on a number of things. Per a post on social media from college basketball insider and reporter Jeff Goodman, Izzo believes he has "adjusted" more than he thinks, and acknowledged that it wasn't always easy for him to make the necessary changes. 'I've adjusted to this new era more than I think," Izzo said during the coaching clinic. "Sure, there have been some rough spots. But players are the most important thing to me.' This past year's success on the court for the Spartans helps vindicate that statement from Izzo, with Michigan State claiming the Big Ten title by more than three games and reaching the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. Hearing Izzo acknowledge that there have "been some rough spots" should also be promising for fans since it shows he isn't set in his old ways and is clearly adjusting to the new era of college basketball. Michigan State basketball listed as finalist for top 60 SG prospect
Michigan State basketball has been named a finalist for a top 60 prospect in the 2026 class. Jasiah Jervis of White Plains, N.Y. has included the Spartans in his top eight schools finalist list, according to Dushawn London of 247Sports. Jervis also included NC State, Pitt, Texas, Illinois, Oregon, Florida and Tennessee in his list of finalist schools. Jervis is a high-end four star prospect, with a recruiting rating of 97.64 in 247Sports' composite system. He ranks as the No. 7 shooting guard and No. 60 overall prospect in 247Sports' rankings for the 2026 class. Jervis holds offers from nearly 20 schools, including from the Spartans who offered him in late June. He has picked up offers from Michigan, Texas, Tennessee and Florida since the Spartans handed him an offer. Michigan State is set to host Jervis for an official visit on the weekend of September 5. This will be a massive recruiting weekend for the Spartans as it aligns with the annual "Grind Week" event. Jervis reportedly also has official visits lined up with each of his other finalists.
