Rei Kawakubo redefines men's suits with radical designs at Paris Fashion Week

Independent5 hours ago

Rei Kawakubo, the ever-restless force behind Comme des Garçons, delivered a characteristically unpredictable twist on men's tailoring, dismantling the traditional suit and remaking it in her own radical image.
Titled 'Not Suits, But Suits,' the Paris Fashion Week show had models striding through a packed, overheated concrete venue Friday evening in looks that both nodded to and defied the idea of formalwear.
Classic suit elements, jackets, lapels, pressed trousers, were reimagined with sharp, architectural interventions: bulging hips, layered or panniered silhouettes, and unexpected splashes of color.
Some jackets appeared as if spliced apart and reassembled, while skinny pants revealed hidden panels and bursts of pattern through carefully placed zippers.
Layering abounded, with cropped jackets stacked over pleated shirting, kilts and shorts. Knitwear was shredded and reconstructed, echoing a sense of disorder within the tailored frame. Accessories pushed the eccentricity further — models wore oversized, multi-brimmed caps crafted from suiting fabrics, paired with long braided wigs and formal shoes.
The collection evoked the need for something transformative in unsettled times. Its atmosphere only heightened the collection's message: in Kawakubo's world, the suit is not a uniform of conformity but a canvas for disruption.
As guests spilled out into the night, applause rang out for a designer who continues to turn fashion's certainties inside out.

Ripped Rams coach Sean McVay and stunning wife Veronika Khomyn unwind on yacht in St Tropez

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay and his glamorous wife Veronika Khomyn have fled California for some European sun. The 39-year-old and his wife were pictured soaking up the sun aboard a luxury yacht in St Tropez, France on Friday. McVay was snapped without a shirt on, exposing his ripped physique that is most likely the envy of some of his own Rams players. Meanwhile Veronika, a real estate broker at The Agency - the firm that is the focus of the Netflix show 'Buying Beverly Hills' - wore an outfit over her bikini. McVay is surely trying to avoid any talk of football as the upcoming NFL season approaches. The Rams are due to begin the training camp at LMU in Los Angeles on July 24. The pair were believed to have met in Washington DC between 2011-2016 while McVay, 39, worked as tight end coach and offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders. The couple are making the most of McVay's time off before the Rams begin their training camp During that time, Khomyn was studying international business at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Khomyn first hinted at their relationship by posting a picture with McVay on Instagram in 2016. The couple tied the knot in a lavish Beverly Hills wedding in June 2022, about four months after McVay won the Rams their second franchise Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals. The couple welcomed their son, Jordan, in October 2023.

Glastonbury rapper leads ‘death to IDF' chant

Chants of 'death to the IDF' were heard at Glastonbury on Saturday ahead of the appearance of the pro-Palestinian Irish rappers Kneecap. There was vocal support for the Palestinian cause from the festival crowd, with flags flown among the fans and in front of the main stage. During his set, the rapper Bob Vylan shouted out: 'Death to the IDF' – a reference to the Israel Defense Forces – and spoke of his support for Kneecap. One estimate from an eyewitness suggested that, at one stage, half the thousands-strong crowd were chanting 'Death to the IDF'. As Nilufer Yanya performed an earlier set, the words 'Free Free Palestine' flashed up on the screen behind her and a pro-Palestinian banner was brought on stage. It came as the BBC confirmed that it would not screen Kneecap's set on The Other Stage live on Saturday afternoon, saying an edited version would be made available on demand later. Politicians and music industry officials had petitioned Glastonbury to drop the band, after rapper Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh was charged with a terrorism offence for allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag at a gig last year. Hezbollah is proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the UK. Mr Ó hAnnaidh will appear in court for a further hearing on Aug 20. He has not yet entered a plea, but in a statement posted on social media in May, Kneecap said: 'We deny this 'offence' and will vehemently defend ourselves.' Glastonbury defended the decision to proceed with the gig, with organiser Emily Eavis saying: 'There have been a lot of really heated topics this year, but we remain a platform for many, many artists from all over the world and, you know, everyone is welcome here.' Kneecap's appearance has caused problems for the BBC, which had to decide whether it could broadcast their set and meet its obligations to impartiality and offensive language. In a statement, the corporation said: 'Whilst the BBC doesn't ban artists, our plans ensure that our programming meets our editorial guidelines. 'We don't always live stream every act from the main stages and look to make an on-demand version of Kneecap's performance available on our digital platforms, alongside more than 90 other sets.'

Orlando Bloom, 48, and Sydney Sweeney, 27, enjoy a stroll through sun-soaked Venice together the morning after star-studded Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez wedding

Orlando Bloom and Sydney Sweeney were spotted enjoying a stroll through the sun-soaked streets of Venice on Saturday. The Pirates of the Caribbean star, 48, and The White Lotus actress, 27, had been two of many A-listers who flew across from the States to attend the lavish wedding of Jeff Bezos, 61, and his now-wife Lauren Sanchez, 55. Following the ceremony and a star-studded rave into the early hours of Saturday morning, the pair took some time to explore the scenic streets of Venice together on Saturday. Wearing her blonde locks down, Sydney slipped into a floral dress for the morning stroll before adding a few inches to her frame in a pair of red high heels. Meanwhile Orlando sported an all-black outfit consisting of a pair of very short shorts, a Stussy T-shirt, a co-ordinated cap and some shades. After jetting off to Venice for the week of celebrations, the Lord Of The Rings star made headlines after he was spotted in the back of a Venetian water taxi with a woman on Thursday. It came just a short time after news that Orlando and his fiancée Katy Perry, 40, had called off their engagement broke. The woman spotted enjoying an evening with the A-lister was later revealed to be a woman called Jamie Mizrahi, 36, who was actually a former stylist for Katie and Meghan Markle. Orlando was also spotted enjoying a Venetian brunch the following morning and sipping on cocktails poolside with celebrity pals Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Brady during a boys' day out, while Katy continued her tour in Australia. Meanwhile Sydney - who sparked romance rumours with Tom after they were spotted chatting at a bar - was reportedly the 'most sought after' celebrity in Venice. A source told MailOnline: 'Sydney apparently is the most sought-after person to be around at the Bezos wedding. 'Everyone wants to talk to her and every guy that has been in her presence has talked about how stunning she is in real life.' The Euphoria star looked ethereal for the wedding on Friday, clad in a dazzling pink dress which complimented her blonde locks. Wearing her blonde locks down, Sydney slipped into a floral dress for the morning stroll before adding a few inches to her frame in a pair of red high heels The 27-year-old actress slipped into a pink dress for the evening as she was pictured on a Venetian taxi boat on her way to the wedding on Friday The festivities are set to continue on Saturday night as the A-listers will once again gather for a huge party, though some guests including Kim and Khloe Kardashian left early. Sydney was one of a host of stars to put on their best glam for what was the dubbed 'the wedding of the century'. As ever, all eyes were on the Kardashian sisters - Kim, Kendall, Kylie and Khloe - as they stepped out for another high-profile event. Kylie, 27, displayed her enviable curves in a figure-hugging silver corset dress and a pair of stylish sunglasses. However, she came under fire from some fans who pointed out that her dress looked very close to white in certain lighting. Kylie risked Lauren's wrath with the bold choice since traditionally, white is the color reserved for the bride - and guests are usually urged to steer clear of any colour that may even appear close in order to avoid confusion or steal the spotlight. She was pictured boarding a boat taxi with her sister Kendall, who looked elegant in a black ensemble, on their way to the wedding. SKIMS owner Kim wore the same brown glasses she's sported throughout her few nights in Italy She gave herself a few extra inches in a pair of white stiletto heels as she strutted her stuff to board a boat Khloe carried a vibrant pink designer bag along with her as she boarded the flight at Venice Airport Kendall Jenner (pictured) made her own escape from the wedding, weaving through the city's canals and posing against the breathtaking backdrop of Italy's finest architecture The sisters appeared to be in excellent spirits on the night as they were spotted making their arrival on a boat She put on a busty display in the look and added a statement jewelled necklace to her ensemble She was joined by Khloe who put on an equally glamorous display in a strapless pink gown with a feathered shawl Meanwhile, Kim's outfit was however blasted as 'basic and boring' by fans, as the reality star slipped into a shiny black gown with laser-cut trimmings on its sides. The 200 VIP guests who attended the ceremony on the exclusive San Maggiore island were too invited to an afterparty in the city afterwards. But Kim and Khloe were spotted making a swift exit from the $20million affair by boat as they bailed early and, once again, the Kardashians didn't waste any time leaving Venice on Saturday despite festivities being far from over. The sisters were spotted wearing casual ensembles as they made a low-key exit from the Italian city, presumably to board a private flight back to Los Angeles SKIMS owner Kim, 44, showed off her incredible figure in figure-hugging black leggings and a fitted grey bandeau top, while she sported a pair of aviator shades. Meanwhile, Khloe, 41, also covering her eyes with a pair of shades, cut a trendy figure in an all-black ensemble along with a jacket. Their sisters Kendall, 29, and Kylie, 27, were nowhere in sight as the duo headed out of Venice, as they appeared to be staying in the city for longer. Later in the day, their mother Kris, 69, and her boyfriend Corey Gamble were seen smiling and blowing kisses as they headed off in a water taxi. The celebrations are far from over, with the festivities slated to continue at the Arsenale di Venezia on Saturday night. Friday's wedding, held two years after Jeff proposed to Lauren aboard his $500million superyacht, was described as 'extremely intimate' with a strict no-phone policy - with around 70 of the 200 guests being family members. The only images that emerged of the nuptials came via Lauren's official Instagram account - and photos of guests leaving the night-time celebrations were scarce. Oprah Winfrey was also among the star-studded guest list and looked incredible in a pink dress, showing off her slimmed-down frame There were more celebrities than anyone had predicted, with Leonardo Di Caprio also in attendance Miguel Bezos, the adoptive father of Amazon's founder Jeff Bezos leaves the Aman Hotel on his wedding day of Jeff Bezos with Lauren Sanchez Model Karlie Kloss showed off her shoulders in a clavicle-baring black gown with a choker Bill Gates arrives at the Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez Wedding on June 27, 2025 in Venice, Italy Jeff and Lauren are thought to have splashed out a staggering $20million on their multiple-day extravagant wedding bash. As guests arrived at the reception on Friday, they were welcomed by the stirring sounds of trumpets, violins, and a soulful Gospel choir. That same choir returned to belt out Whitney Houston's Higher Love right after the couple exchanged their vows, with guests cheering and singing along during the heartfelt moment. Opera singer Matteo Bocelli kicked off the wedding reception with a touching tribute, opening his set with the timeless Elvis Presley classic I Can't Help Falling in Love With You. The son of renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli stepped in since his father was tied up with concerts in southern Italy over the weekend. Earlier in the day, award-winning journalist Sanchez made a chic first appearance, stepping out of the five-star Aman Hotel in a sophisticated white Dior puff-sleeve suit, perfectly accessorized with a headscarf and oversized sunglasses. In the photographs, she flashed a dazzling new giant diamond ring that caught plenty of attention. It was revealed ahead of the nuptials that Jeff and Lauren had already legally tied the knot before today's official ceremony on San Giorgio Maggiore island.
