Why plans for a £1,200,000,000,000 'mirror city' might be a bit too ambitious

Metro21-07-2025
Saudi Arabia's £1.2 trillion plan to revolutionise the way people live is being re-evaluated to see if it's even possible.
The Line, a futuristic city in the desert, was meant to transform the sands into a solar-powered city of 9,000,000 people across a 105-mile stretch of mirror-clad skyscrapers from the mountains to the Red Sea.
Some 1,500,000 of these inhabitants were supposed to be settled by 2030, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman hoped it would rival the pyramids of Egypt as an icon of timeless grandiosity.
But this week, the project has entered a new phase of evaluation. External consultants are reportedly in talks to see if the project is still feasible.
After pouring millions into the project, the country might have to take a step back as the price of oil fell, increasing the country's deficit.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Neom explained: 'As is typical with large-scale, multiyear projects, strategic reviews are common practice and occur several times over the course of a major development project or infrastructure program.
'The Line remains a strategic priority and Neom is focused on maintaining operational continuity, improving efficiencies and accelerating progress to match the overall vision and objectives of the project.'
Previously, one investor started to dismiss people working on the site, according to a document seen by Bloomberg.
Further employee dismissals on the project could happen if Saudi continues to reckon with its current financial situation.
It comes as last year, Giles Pendleton, COO for The Line, shared images of The Line to check 'naysayers' who doubted the plans would ever become reality.
If the city is created, it would become the most densely populated place on earth, seven times more cramped than Singapore or Hong Kong.
Such a scale-back has rattled those constructing an AI oasis for the uber-rich. These include an eight-sided port and an industrial city floating on the Red Sea right at the edge of Neom.
Another lavish investment is the luxury tourist island of Sindalah, also made by Neom, which boasts a global yachting hub.
But the kingdom's Public Investment Fund is yet to approve this year's budget for Neom's city and its tech revolution.
Announced in 2021, the vision for Neom – also known as The Line – is a city full of green spaces, free of cars and with all your daily needs within a five-minute walk.
More than 100,000,000 cubic metres of sand have already been moved as contractors excavate a 75-mile canyon in the desert.
Through the middle will run a tree-lined canal between the towering lines of skyscrapers.
There'll be a marina for its residents' superyachts, a members-only beach club, a luxury golf resort, and a sports stadium 1,000ft above ground.
As if that wasn't enough pampered living, there'll even be a network of robots and AI to make their lives even easier.
Despite claims that the hanging glass apartments will 'offer points of connection between humans and nature', critics have accused Neom of posing a threat to both people and animals.
Tribes have been cleared to make way for its construction. Security forces have been accused of shooting dead a resident. More Trending
And bird experts warn it will be a 'death trap' for millions of birds migrating between Europe and Africa each year.
'Birds flying into tall windows is a serious problem, and this is a building that is 500m high going across Saudi Arabia, with windmills on top,' Professor William Sutherland, director of research in Cambridge University's zoology department, told The Times.
'It's also kind of like a mirror, so you don't really see it. So unless they do something about it, there's a serious risk that there could be lots of damage to migratory birds.'
That's if the futuristic plans ever become more than just a line in the sand.

Van Dijk names the signing Liverpool need to make before transfer deadline

Virgil van Dijk has revealed the signing he wants Liverpool to make before the summer transfer window shuts. The Premier League champions have spent almost £300m on new signings so far this summer, bringing the likes of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez to Anfield. The heavy investment has, for many pundits, made Liverpool firm favourites to retain the Premier League trophy they lifted in Arne Slot's first season at the club. But Liverpool were handed a slight reality check on Sunday as they were beaten by Crystal Palace in the Community Shield. The Reds led twice through new signings Hugo Ekitike and Frimpong but Crystal Palace took the contest to penalties through Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson then saved two penalties and saw Mohamed Salah sky his effort as the Eagles won the Community Shield for the first time. Despite their sensational spending this summer, Liverpool remain open to completing further deals, having already failed with a £110m bid for Alexander Isak and expressing interest in Marc Guehi. Anfield captain Van Dijk has called on Liverpool's board to bolster the team's attacking options following the departure of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz. Nunez completed a £46.3m move to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal earlier in the weekend, while Diaz joined Bayern Munich last month for £65.5m. Asked if he was hoping for more business before the transfer deadline, Van Dijk told talkSPORT: 'Well, we just lost Darwin, he went to Saudi and we lost Lucho, obviously he went to Bayern. 'I think there's always room for an attacker in order to strengthen us so let's see what the window brings in terms of the balance of the team.' Speaking more generally about Liverpool's Community Shield defeat, Van Dijk added: 'Obviously we wanted to win, it's a trophy that we were playing for. 'There were many good things from us in the game but there's also a lot of work to do and we need to get ready for the start of the Premier League now.' Liverpool boss Slot is less convinced about the needs for new signings to arrive at Anfield. 'I think we have more than more than enough options to be good enough to win the Community Shield,' he said. 'This is where I focus on myself. With the players we have we should be able to to win, to score. 'My last concern at the moment is our offensive quality. It's more… it's not a concern, but if I look at the amount of goals we've conceded in pre-season that's not of our standard.' Asked if he wanted a new defender to arrive at the club, Slot added: 'Now we've lost Jarell Quansah and that's one thing. 'But Unfortunately Conor Bradley, who's a right full-back and Joe Gomez who's a centre-back are injured. Then Ryan Gravenberch became a dad last night, he can also play really well as a centre-back. More Trending 'But if Joe is fit and Ryan is back and Wataru [Endo] can play there and the two we started today, then we're in a good place. 'So I think throughout the whole pre-season, Alisson needed to go to Brazil. Virgil was sick last week now Ryan for a very nice reason for him… but we had to miss him. 'It looks as if you lack something but if everybody is there I think we have a very strong squad.' Liverpool kick-start their Premier League title defence on Friday night against Bournemouth. United need further recruits to seriously challenge despite £200m spree

Manchester United have spent an eye-popping £200million on three forwards during the summer but is it enough to seriously strengthen an attack which only scored 44 Premier League goals last seaon? Matheus Cunha was the first to arrive when he was signed from Wolves with Bryan Mbeumo joining from Brentford before Benjamin Sesko was unveiled as the third new striker before Saturday's 1-1 draw in the friendly with Fiorentina at Old Trafford. The 22-year-old was linked with Liverpool, Newcastle and Arsenal among others but United have agreed a £73million deal with RB Leipzig to add his undoubted potential to what was a powderpuff attack. He has scored 39 goals in 87 matches for the Bundesliga side and is interesting each-way material at 25/1 with BetVictor to win this year's Golden Boot. However… Rasmus Hojlund may have only scored 14 times in the top flight in two seasons with United but often lacked quality service. United failed to score in 15 league matches, a record which was only better than bottom club Southampton, and unless Ruben Amorim can also improve his midfield options then they will remain a long way from returning to Champions League football, let alone win their first title since the 2012/13 campaign. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. Brighton's box-to-box operative Carlos Baleba has been linked with a move to Old Trafford but the Seagulls are demanding more than £100m for him to leave the Amex Stadium so cheaper alternatives may be sought. Perhaps they should have sold captain Bruno Fernandes when Saudi clubs were linked with £100m enquiries or found a buyer for Casemiro who increasingly looks past his better days as both can be defensive liabilities. A positive is that United may have missed out on Champions League football by losing the Europa League final to Spurs in Bilbao but that should leave their squad fresher than most this term as they will have a reduced workload although they look skinny at a best price of 13/8 with Sky Bet to finish in the top five. The SpreadEx and Sporting Index offer of 21/10 for a top-four finish also looks underwhelming as does Betfred's 14/1 to finish as the top team in the North West which would mean amassing more points than Liverpool and neighbours Manchester City. The 25/1 with Ladbrokes and Coral to win the title is obviously a ridiculous non-starter so United fans seeking a pre-season flutter should take the 16/1 with bet365 for them to win the FA Cup or take 12/1 with the same firm, Ladbrokes, Coral and others to lift the Carabao Cup and pray for favourable draws as a bare minimum in both competitions. Leeds United made hard work of it in the end but they were easily the most impressive club in the Championship last season and deserved to be promoted as title-holders. They have signed well this summer and appeal at 8/11 with William Hill, Betfred and Bresbet to stay up. Even better is the 5/6 with Betfred to be the top promoted club which will cash even if they do go straight back down. Brighton are unfortunate not to be playing European football this season and if they can keep their better players between now and the transfer deadline – and enjoy a tad more luck with injuries – they look a lock-in to finish in the top half of the Premier League at 10/11 with Betfred, especially as they drew eight times at the Amex Stadium. More Trending If just a few of those results can be turn into wins they could easily finish as high as sixth, where Aston Villa wound up just five points better off than the south coast side last term, at 11/2 with Paddy Power and Betfair. CATL suspends production at China lithium mine, Bloomberg News reports

Aug 10 (Reuters) - Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) ( opens new tab has suspended production at its lithium mine Jianxiawo, in China's Jiangxi province for at least three months, Bloomberg News reported on Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter. The Chinese battery manufacturer announced internally that the Jianxiawo mine would be halting operations temporarily, the report said, adding that affiliated refineries in nearby Yichun had been informed. CATL did not respond immediately to an emailed request for comment on Sunday and Reuters was unable to obtain immediate verification of the report. Reuters reported in February that CATL resumed operations at its lithium lepidolite mine in China's Jiangxi province. CATL's mine in the southern Chinese province of Jiangxi has been a major contributor to rapidly growing supplies of lithium in China, the world's top processor of the battery material. Reports of its closure in September caused lithium stocks to rally sharply.
