Faces and Phases of Resilience: A Memoir of a Special Kind,
Tinyiko Maluleke writes lucidly, turning words in every page into narrative jewels of beauty and precision which evoke pathos that sinks one's heart into dark moments of sadness — and anger — to have been born in apartheid South Africa, even as there may also be ample evidence that the new democratic land knows no better.
Making such allusions as the opening paragraph of the book paints, is no exaggeration. The writer's words are a reflection of what Mzansi has become, missing opportunities of greatness, with its leaders obsessed with ill-gotten wealth, instead of focusing on empowering people through leadership excellence.
The insinuations of poor governance are well thought through, as they are well canvassed — and these, to the credit of the author, are supported by valid and cogent arguments and observations.
So even if we want to complain that the author has gone overboard, there is very little ammunition to rebut his points and observations about the past and present. The assertions are borne out by hard irrefutable historical facts.
The insatiable appetite for graft and corruption continues to manifest in all tiers of government even as there may be discernible green shoots that could cause us to justly celebrate the new constitutional democratic order.
As it should be, Maluleke devotes a few pages to pique the reader's interest with background information. He spells out how it all started, and who the motivator for developing a palate for letter writing was, stating the honour belonged to his 'illiterate grandmother'.
There will be 49 chapters to be read to finish the biographical essays. There is a wide range of personalities, some iconic and famous, and some lesser known, but all contributing to creating a great compendium of story-telling, illuminating his biographical characters with great dexterity and skill.
I note that all the characters matter a great deal to him, for if they did not, they would not have formed part of his 'memoir of a special kind' told as honestly as he does.
Among all the characters Maluleke has chosen to amplify his narrative, prominent figures such as Michelle Obama, Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela, Imtiaz Sooliman, Thabo Mbeki, Sam Nzima, Hugh Masekela, Andries Tatane and last, but not least, himself, add to the colour of the book.
In a chapter talking about himself, he imagines his imminent death, mostly because of the intensifying xenophobic streak that has invaded the country.
If your skin tone is extraordinarily dark, and your language is described by the 'purists' as out of line with what is generally accepted as a local dialect, you might suffer the ignominy of death, even a cruel death by necklace — an extrajudicial summary execution method reserved for 'suspected apartheid informers'.
This practice was rife in the 1980s, less now. Its targets were routinely set alight, with a petrol-drenched tyre placed and lit around their necks, to die excruciatingly painful deaths because they were thought of or seen as apartheid collaborators.
How can South Africa save itself from this xenophobic scourge, deepened by the government's inability to create an environment in which all people of this country lead peaceful lives.
Maluleke, in his chapter,
The Day I Die
, alludes to this reality — its possibility. He writes: 'Will I make a last-ditch effort to escape — dashing through the crowd like a mad bull only to invite a rain of kicks, stabs and beatings? Eventually engulfed in the vibrant flames, will I do the Ernesto Nhamuave dance — the death dance of the Mozambican man who was burnt to death in May 2008?
This, I think, represents, and maybe a metaphor, for the violent country we have inherited, where human life, and its dignity, is sacrificed at the altar of racial prejudice.
What is the solution? How does the country looking down the precipice, on the brink of political disaster, save itself from abomination?
Maluleke, in his own imaginary think-tank institutionalised mindset, chooses the person of Imtiaz Sooliman, founder of the Gift of the Givers, as a typical example of a leader who can save South Africa from political implosion.
He writes that the country's national dreams are evaporating, with its leaders 'sitting on the heap of our unconsummated development goals, rummaging through the dumping sites where our decaying and derelict national hopes lie abandoned', and wondering what value to attach to a free land with one of the best Constitution in the world, yet unable to yield the fruits Mandela envisaged — the fruits of functional governance envisaged in the country's Constitution.
Maluleke envisages 'a deep leadership crisis' accompanied by '[d]ysfunctional and frequently collapsing coalition governments, producing a high turnover of mayors, with little improvement in service delivery'.
He adds: 'South Africans are slowly realising that we need to give up the search for the next Mandela, both because s/he does not exist and, in fact, maybe we don't need such a leader at this time.'
If we don't need a Mandela, what do we need?
Maluleke suggests we need a Sooliman-type of leadership, arguing that 'political leadership has been greatly overrated … so have political parties', adding 'we should first go to civil society and to the NGO sector before we go to the politicians'.
'We need a system that makes political parties optional and dispensable', and in his cabinet, Sooliman would need to include academics and thought leaders such as Nomalanga Mkhize, Tshilidzi Marwala, Quarraisha Abdool Karim, Gloria Serobe and Tembeka Ngcukaitobi.

He writes that 'the few remaining consciences' have been 'seduced by the sweet aroma of state power and its seemingly bottomless war chest …'
When the sloppy presidential tenure of Jacob Zuma ended — a presidency that should not have been — President Cyril Ramaphosa ascended power.
Maluleke writes about the country that had been shortchanged by Zuma's presidency, suggesting that the Thuma Mina theme would strike a chord with the populace, and would inspire the resurgence of the ANC from its political leadership slumber.
In the end, whether South Africa will see light and be associated with freedom and all that accrues from it, the author doubts it.
Instead, he sees 'the gangrene of malfeasance spreading rapidly in the country's body politic, deadening the senses, numbing the pain, blunting the few remaining consciences'.
Yet Maluleke's book is one of hope and restoration, struggling to come to terms with the people's aspirations of a better life.
Real life stories, told in an irrepressible style, are gems spiced generously with politics, and some are reflective of what the future holds for South Africans.
Some essays, though light-hearted, are sorrowful. They serve as a gentle critique, a reminder that the value of life could be better protected if leaders in all tiers of government serve the people who elected them to power rather than their own self-serving interests.
One hopes highly paid government officials buy the book so that they know what ought to happen in the country to make our democracy succeed. It is also a good read

South African media need to move away from event-based coverage of gender-based violence (GBV) and report stories with context, compassion and survivor-centred ethics. This is the message from North West University (NWU) master's graduate Elsje-Marié Language-Jordaan, who recently completed a study analysing how GBV was reported in the media during the 16 Days of Activism campaign, from October 14 2023 to January 21 2024. Speaking to TimesLIVE, Language-Jordaan said her research stemmed from a desire to raise awareness about GBV. 'I wanted to focus on crime reporting and specifically the ethics of crime reporting,' she said. 'I realised I had a particular crime in mind, gender-based violence, because it's something I'm passionate about.' Her dissertation combined social responsibility theory and postcolonial media theory to propose a new ethical framework for reporting GBV. 'At first I didn't intend creating a framework. But after a while I realised it was what the study needed and what I feel journalism needs regarding GBV reporting.' Language-Jordaan found GBV is often misrepresented as isolated incidents, with little effort to link these crimes to broader systemic issues. 'Gender-based violence is not something that stands on its own. Our background influences it, how we were raised and how our country was shaped.' She believes media outlets need to shift from incident-based to context-informed reporting. 'If we keep on pretending it's just a thing that happens, the audience may never fully understand the seriousness of GBV or what can be done about it.' Language-Jordaan's framework emphasises ethical accountability, contextual depth and survivor and community inclusion. She said while media ethics guidelines exist, they don't go far enough. 'There needs to be some sort of bigger ethical framework to guide journalists, especially young journalists, so they know what to do and they don't do weird stuff to re-traumatise people.'

Calls grow for Athletics South Africa board to resign over money scandal A storm is brewing in South African athletics as a group calling itself 'concerned athletes and administrators' calls for the immediate resignation of the Athletics South Africa (ASA) board during a fiery press conference in Milpark on July 28. Citing deep-rooted governance failures and alleged misuse of funds, the group, led by ASA board member Dorah Mgwevu, athletics administrator Ernest Moikangoe, and athlete Keneilwe Sesing, issued a bold ultimatum that ASA President James Moloi and his board have seven days to step down or face protest action. 'We, the concerned stakeholders, administrators, civil society organisations and citizens of South Africa, demand the immediate resignation of the ASA leadership, including the CEO and entire board of directors,' said Moikangoe. ALSO READ: South African youth lead the way in international cue sports and athletics The veteran official said this follows recent allegations that Moloi had used ASA funds for personal gain. This was revealed last month during an oversight hearing by Parliament's Sports, Arts and Culture portfolio committee. 'The findings presented in parliament are a national embarrassment and betrayal of public trust. They paint a picture of an organisation in complete disarray where corruption, neglect of athletes, and gross abuse of funds have become institutionalised. 'We can no longer tolerate a leadership that has repeatedly failed to safeguard the integrity of sport in South Africa.' The group demands the appointment of an interim committee and the launch of a full forensic investigation by the Special Investigating Unit into ASA financial activities from 2020 to 2025. ASA is meant to serve athletes – not to fund parties, taverns and corrupt deals,' Moikangoe said. Should the ASA board fail to resign within seven days, Moikangoe said the group will stage a protest at ASA headquarters and petition World Athletics to suspend the federation until their demands are met. Mgwevu echoed Moikangoe's sentiments, saying Moloi should step aside to allow SASCOC's investigation into ASA's financial irregularities – including whether funds were misused – to proceed without his interference. 'The president must step aside. We are aware of the ongoing investigation. 'How do we have this investigation when the accused person still has access to information and witnesses? Will this be a fair investigation? 'We appeal for Moloi to step aside and allow this investigation to take place fairly.' Professor Sir Hilary Beckles receives honorary doctorate from NWU

Professor Sir Hilary Beckles. On Wednesday, 30 July, the North-West University (NWU) conferred an honorary doctorate on Professor Sir Hilary McDonald Beckles, a distinguished Caribbean historian and vice-chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI). The award recognises Sir Hilary's formidable academic contributions and his global advocacy for social justice. On the evening before the ceremony, he delivered a public lecture, titled: 'From Durban to Accra: Rise of the Global Reparations Movement'. The honorary doctorate – Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa) in History – from the NWU's Faculty of Humanities, stands as a testament to Beckles' lifelong effort to use history as a tool for healing and reform. Beckles described the honorary doctorate as a deeply personal honour. 'This feels like a validation of my life's work,' he said. 'As a teenager in the UK, I was actively involved in the anti-apartheid and Free Nelson Mandela campaigns. I've always been philosophically opposed to injustice. I'm a humanist, and I believe in humanity at its best.' Beckles recalled meeting Steve Biko in Zambia as a student. 'I expressed concern for his safety, and he told me that if I ever had a son, I might name him after him. He lost his life, and I honoured that legacy. My son's name is Biko.' Reflecting on the honorary doctorate, he added: 'To be here, decades later, nearing the end of my career, it means everything. It fills me with joy and gratitude.' Beckles is not merely a chronicler of the past. With over 100 peer-reviewed articles, 20 academic books and his role as editor of UNESCO's General History of Africa, he has helped reshape scholarly and public understanding of the Atlantic slave trade, colonialism and Caribbean identity. Cricket, too, has served as a site of analysis and advocacy. From 2007 to 2013, he was a member of the West Indies Cricket Board, engaging with the sport both intellectually and institutionally. Yet it is his work beyond the classroom and archive that distinguishes Beckles. As chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Reparations Commission, he has translated historical insight into political action. His efforts have prompted governments – including the Netherlands – to issue formal apologies for their colonial histories. He has also influenced initiatives such as the US House of Representatives' HR 40 Bill, and contributed to the African Union's upcoming 2025 'Year of Reparations' and the proposal for an international reparations tribunal. Under his leadership, the University of the West Indies has expanded its global footprint, attaining 'triple first' status in 2020: first in the Caribbean, among the top 1% of universities in Latin America, and in the top 1% of institutions worldwide aged between 50 and 80 years. His vision has included the creation of 10 international centres from Africa to Asia, and the launch of platforms such as UWITV. The Five Islands Campus in Antigua and Barbuda stands as a tangible legacy of this expansive strategy. Beckles' many accolades include a knighthood from Barbados, the Dr Martin Luther King Jr Award for Social Justice, and designation as the American Historical Association's 2022 Honorary Foreign Member. 'We are honoured to have conferred an honorary doctorate upon Professor Sir Hilary Beckles – a distinguished scholar and public intellectual whose life's work is a masterclass in using academic inquiry as a force for societal transformation.
