Friendlies: Real Madrid win big, Bayern youngsters impress, Inter draw

Yahoo3 days ago
Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Inter were all in action across Tuesday's club friendlies.
Here's how the action unfolded in all three games ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
Inter denied win at the death by MonzaScorers: Ciurria 32'; Birindelli (OG) 45+1', Espositio 52'
Inter came from behind to defeat Monza 2-1 in their penultimate pre-season friendly.
Cristian Chivu left many of his big guns on the bench to start with, and saw his side go behind on the half hour mark. Wing-back Patrick Ciurria was the scorer, tapping home at the back post after a fine cross into the box. from Gianluca Caprari.
The man on the other flank, Samuele Birindelli, was the unfortunate scorer of Inter's equaliser in added time before the break, powering a header into his own bet from Federico Dimarco's cross.
Francesco Esposito turned the game on its head early into the second half, instinctively flicking home Matteo Darmian's shot, as the youngster once again showed why he could be one to look out for this season.
However, there was a sting in the tail late, late on as Paulo Azzi struck to grab Monza a draw.
Inter conclude their pre-season with a home clash with Olympiacos on Saturday.
New No.10 Mbappé leads the way in four-star Madrid showScorers: Militão 10', Mbappé 13', 59', Rodrygo 81'
Real Madrid made extremely light work of surprise early Austrian Bundesliga leader WSG Tirol with a 4-0 win.
The game was near-over as a contest after just 13 minutes with a quickfire double from Éder Militão and Kylian Mbappé.
The Brazilian looped a header in before the French forward took a ball beautifully on the turn from Arda Güler and smashed home for his first goal wearing the No.10 shirt.
His second came after the break, and after a pitch invader got a selfie with him, and it was another sublime finish, as he rolled the ball over his foot to sidestep the Tirol keeper and tap home.
Rodrygo came off the bench to add a late fourth, and perhaps remind Xabi Alonso of his worth amid reports of a move away.
The new Los Blancos boss will now set his sights on his side's La Liga opener against Osasuna at the Bernabéu in a week's time.
Bayern youngsters steal the showScorers: Karl 20', Kusi-Asare 26'; Giandomenico 51'
Bayern Munich edged Grasshoppers Zurich to a 2-1 victory to cap pre-season.
17-year-old starlet Lennart Karl produced a moment of quality on the 20-minute mark to give his side the lead, firing an unstoppable, dipping effort into the net from 25 yards out.
Another Bayern academy graduate, Jonah Kusi-Asare, added a second just five minutes later, latching onto Karl's through ball and lashing into the top corner.
The Bundesliga side couldn't extend their lead before the break and Grasshoppers pulled a goal back shortly after half time through Loris Giandomenico's fierce first-time volley from a tight angle.
Vincent Kompany made seven changes on the hour mark and two substitutes almost combined for a third when Dayot Upamecano's hooked volley from Joshua Kimmich's cross hit the crossbar.
Although Bayern couldn't find a third, they remained on top and saw out a comfortable win to end pre-season with two victories ahead of their season opener in the Supercup against Stuttgart.

Atletico Madrid receive disappointing Alex Baena injury blow

Atletico Madrid made a disappointing start to the season after a 2-1 loss at Espanyol, and they have now been dealt further bad news in the last 24 hours. Alex Baena was withdrawn midway through the second half at the RCDE Stadium, which was a decision that many Atleti supporters were not happy about. But as it turns out, it was a decision that Diego Simeone needed to make, given that the former Villarreal midfielder picked up an injury. An official medical report from Atleti have confirmed that Baena has suffered a low-grade muscle injury, following tests on Wednesday. 'Álex Baena was unable to complete Wednesday's training session after feeling some muscle discomfort. The Spanish international has undergone tests and the report offered by the club's medical services indicates that he suffers a low-grade muscle injury. 'The red-and-white '10' will carry out physiotherapy sessions and readaptation work in the gym and the evolution of his injury will determine his return to competition.' MADRID, 28/07/2025.- El presidente del Atlético de Madrid, Enrique Cerezo (d) durante la presentación de Álex Baena (i) como nuevo jugador del club, este lunes en el estadio Metropolitano de la capital. EFE/Zipi Baena expected to be out until after international break As per Marca, it is an adductor injury that Baena has suffered, and the expectation is that he will be out for two weeks. If that is the case, he will miss this weekend's first home match of the season against Elche, as well as the trip to Alaves seven days later – and it could also mean that Luis de la Fuente avoids calling him up for Spain's 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and Türkiye. Atleti do have cover for Baena, so it is unlikely that he is rushed back for the trip to Alaves – which he is currently touch-and-go for. The options that Simeone has to replace him include Antoine Griezmann, Alexander Sorloth and Conor Gallagher.

Villarreal set to break their transfer record

Villarreal set to break their transfer record originally appeared on The Sporting News Villarreal had a pretty good season last year as they finished 5th in La Liga last year and qualified for the Champions League. They started off their league campaign with a comfortable win against Real Oviedo and seem like they're on track for another good season. It seems like Villarreal are also expecting to have a good season as they are reportedly looking to improve their team by making a record signing. Renato Veiga to Villarreal Portuguese centre back Renato Veiga is heading to Villarreal on a seven year deal according to Fabrizio Romano. The club is set to pay Chelsea 29.5 million euros with a 40% sell-on clause that helped entice The Blues to complete the deal. The Portuguese centre back spent last season on loan at Juventus as he had struggled to settle in with Chelsea falling victim to the constant buying and selling of young talents that have become a staple of the new regime. Now, the talented centre back has the chance to settle down and develop and could become one of the best centre backs in the league. Villarreal Ambitions Villarreal fans should be ecstatic with this signing as their club is showing the ambition to build on last season and improve the team. They improve on their centre backs and should be able to make the starting eleven. It's the right move to make when the club is competing in multiple competitions this year. Villarreal will hope to make a significant push in Europe and push to be the best of the rest in La Liga.

Real Madrid debutant led all La Liga players in one stat in opening gameweek

A member of the defensive ranks at Real Madrid led all La Liga players in one particular statistic across the season's opening round of fixtures. That's according to Squawka, who point towards Álvaro Carreras as the player in question. Left-back Carreras is for his part fresh off an evening to remember on Tuesday. This comes after the 22-year-old was afforded his starting debut in the colours of Real Madrid, following his big-money summer arrival from Benfica. And en route to an eventual 1-0 victory over Osasuna, Carreras showcased precisely why those behind the scenes at the Santiago Bernabéu were so willing to splash out on his signature. From his berth on the left of Xabi Alonso's backline, the Spaniard shone bright, particularly on the ball. To the point that, as alluded to above, Carreras led all La Liga players in passes into the final third in Gameweek 1. As per the aforementioned Squawka: 'Álvaro Carreras was the only player in LaLiga to make 50+ passes into the final third in GW1.' The former Manchester United starlet managed a hefty 57 such passes, 11 more than Barcelona midfielder Pedri in 2nd. Conor Laird – GSFN
