China unveils drone-mounted quantum device for submarine detection in South China Sea

As US-China tensions simmer over submarine operations in the South China Sea, Chinese space scientists have unveiled a breakthrough in magnetic detection technology that could tip the balance in underwater warfare.
A drone-mounted quantum sensor system, tested successfully in offshore trials, achieved picotesla precision to track magnetic anomaly and map seabed resources while overcoming some severe practical limitations of existing devices, researchers disclosed in a peer-reviewed paper.
With such sensitivity, People's Liberation Army's (PLA) anti-submarine forces cannot only pinpoint a submarine but also catch the tail waves it generates, according to some previous studies.

Traditional optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) – widely used in submarine detection – face critical 'blind zones' in low-latitude regions like the South China Sea, where Earth's magnetic field runs nearly parallel to the surface.
When the sensor's optical axis aligns too closely with magnetic field lines, signals weaken dramatically.
Enter the Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) atomic magnetometer. Leveraging quantum interference effects in rubidium atoms, the device exploits Zeeman splitting – energy level shifts caused by magnetic fields – to generate seven microwave resonance signals.
These frequencies correlate linearly with magnetic field strength, enabling omnidirectional detection regardless of orientation, according to the researchers.
With a sensitivity of 8pT by design – on par with Canada's MAD-XR system used by Nato allies – the Chinese system eliminates blind zones while cutting costs and complexity.
'The MAD-XR is too sophisticated and expensive, limiting the scope of practical applications in real life,' said the team led by Wang Xuefeng, researcher with the Quantum Engineering Research Centre, China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).
The towed system developed by Wang and his colleagues, described in a paper published in the Chinese Journal of Scientific Instrument on April 16, pairs the CPT sensor with a rotor drone via a 20-metre (65.6ft) cable to minimise electromagnetic interference from the aircraft.
A fluxgate magnetometer corrects heading errors, while GPS and ground stations process data using algorithms that suppress noise, compensate for diurnal geomagnetic shifts, and generate high-resolution anomaly maps.
During trials off Weihai, Shandong province, the drone surveyed a 400 by 300-metre grid with 34 crossover points. Raw data showed 2.517 nanotesla (nT) accuracy, refined to 0.849 nT after error correction – a threefold improvement.
Crucially, two independent surveys achieved a 99.8 per cent correlation in magnetic anomaly maps, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of just 1.149 nT, 'demonstrating outstanding stability in real life tests', Wang's team added.
This is not just about submarines, according to the researchers. At picotesla-level sensitivity, it can map oil reservoirs, archaeological wrecks, and tectonic shifts.
Yet defence applications loom large. Unlike the MAD-XR – which uses multiple probes to avoid blind spots at high expense – the single-probe Chinese system costs just a fraction, while outperforming in low-latitude waters, according to the researchers.
But battlefield readiness requires more testing under extreme conditions, which are absent from the published trials. MAD-XR has been proven by years of operational data from US, Japan and a few other countries, according to openly available information.
The CASC is China's largest aerospace defence contractor. Beijing Institute of Aerospace Control Devices also took part in the project.
Scientists in China and some other countries are developing other types of high-performance submarine detectors. The Spin-Exchange Relaxation-Free (SERF) detector, for instance, can reportedly boost sensitivity by 1,000 times to femtotesla range.

A Hong Kong lithium battery recycling start-up is eyeing opportunities at home and in Southeast Asia amid overcapacity and intense competition for recyclable materials in mainland China. Hong Kong Science and Technology Park-based Achelous Pure Metals currently has a capacity to process 150 tonnes of used non-electric vehicle (EV) batteries a year. It has set up its operations in an industrial building in Tuen Mun in the New Territories, which is pending approval from the Environmental Protection Department. The company crushes the batteries into a so-called black mass – a powdery mixture of valuable metals like lithium, cobalt, copper, manganese and nickel – which is then refined into lithium carbonate, cobalt and nickel compounds. 'Our goal is to tackle the growing problem of discarded lithium-ion batteries by bringing scalable, movable, eco-friendly recycling to urban centres starting in Hong Kong, with plans to expand to [Southeast] Asia,' said Alan Wong Yuk-chun, the co-founder and technical director. He said that as the city lacked recycling facilities, small-scale recycling of non-EV batteries could be done in Hong Kong and showcased for overseas business development. Most spent EV batteries were collected and exported, he added. Between two and three tonnes of lithium batteries a day were collected from discarded electrical appliances and power banks in Hong Kong, he said. Achelous has built a pilot version of a robot-assisted system to sort, shred and sift materials derived from the batteries. The system, which is pending a patent, uses a combination of vacuum and heat treatment to evaporate and capture harmful materials and gases like epoxy adhesives and fluorine. The five-year-old start-up has built another pilot project that combines nanoparticles suspended in water or organic solvents that separates molecules based on their charge, to extract and refine valuable metals from the black mass. While Achelous has already deployed its technology at a client's recycling plant in east China's Jiangsu province, which is capable of processing 10,000 tonnes a year, it faces challenges in growing its business due to rampant growth in recycling capacity on the mainland in recent years. 'Our client's factory has to compete for black mass at higher and higher prices, while the prices of end-products like lithium carbonate keep falling amid oversupply,' said Shawn Cheng, Achelous' co-founder and research and development director. The price of battery-grade lithium carbonate, sometimes referred to as 'white gold', plunged nearly 90% to 60,600 yuan (US$7,725) a tonne in May, from 568,000 yuan in November 2022, according to Daiwa Capital Markets. Amid recycling overcapacity in China and US-China trade tensions that threaten to slow demand for lithium batteries, lithium oversupply may peak globally in 2027 before seeing a deficit in the early 2030s, according to a forecast by UK-based commodities consultancy Wood Mackenzie last month. Instead of swimming against the tide, Achelous changed its strategy, setting up a production line in Hong Kong while also seeking to help companies in Southeast Asia build 'micro-factories' to break down lithium batteries and produce black mass to export to its clients in China. The company is in talks with prospective partners to recycle spent lithium batteries from handheld transceivers used by the security industry in Hong Kong, and from discarded electronics in Malaysia and Singapore. 'We want to help [our] partners meet their future recycled content obligations and set up a system to keep track of the materials' footprint for compliance,' Cheng said. Globally, demand for recycled battery materials has been mostly driven by regulations implemented in 2023 by the European Union. The battery and recycling industry is working towards a 50% target for lithium recovery by 2027, rising to 80% by 2031. For cobalt, copper, lead and nickel, the target is 90% by 2027 and 95% by 2031. – South China Morning Post

Ispace's Resilience lander did not decelerate in time, and it was highly likely it made a hard landing on the moon, according to executives. The company's shares were set to fall by their daily limit in Tokyo Friday. The landing attempt, whose live stream was watched by more than 17,000 people, was heralded as a sign of a renaissance in Japan's space operations. Its failure casts a cloud on ispace's next mission, with executives saying the impact there is uncertain. Loss of contact just before the lander was expected to touch down brought founder and Chief Executive Officer Takeshi Hakamada close to tears. "But I don't think this is the time to cry,' he said at a news conference. "We need to resolve these issues and achieve results in the next Mission 3 and Mission 4.' The mission follows a failed attempt in 2023 when a programming error led to a crash of the spacecraft. If the attempt had succeeded, ispace would have been the first non-US company to park a spacecraft safely on the moon. Texas-based rivals Intuitive Machines Inc. and Firefly Aerospace Inc. have already done so, as countries race to explore the moon. Comparing ispace's results with those of its US rivals, "We are forced to acknowledge that we've fallen a step behind,' Chief Financial Officer Jumpei Nozaki said. The Japanese lander launched into space aboard one of Elon Musk-led SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets in January. The rocket also launched a lander from Firefly that touched down on the lunar surface in March. Resilience was expected to dispatch its rover, named Tenacious, which is equipped with a high-definition camera and a shovel to collect lunar regolith and transmit data back to the lander. Ispace signed a contract in 2020 with NASA to provide the US agency with regolith collected on the moon's surface. Aboard the lander are customer payloads with varying purposes including a commemorative plate from Bandai Namco Research Institute Inc. - an affiliate of the entertainment company behind game brands like Pac Man and Gundam - and experimental equipment such as a device to extract hydrogen from water. Receipt of as much as ¥238 million ($1.7 million) of the estimated $16 million payload may now be in jeopardy, the company said. Ispace plans to send its landers more frequently to the moon starting in 2027, with an aim to transport payloads two or three times a year, according to Hakamada. The plan is based on his belief that humans could start making a living on the moon as early as the 2040s. Hakamada said in an interview before the landing attempt that Japan will lose out on opportunities to seek fresh growth if it refuses to accept failures as a course of nature. Dinosaur feathers found trapped in Burmese amber have shed new light on the evolution of flight feathers, an essential step that allowed early birds to surpass their dinosaur relatives in conquering the skies, a Chinese study has found. Through a detailed structural study of feathers dating back 99 million years to the Cretaceous period (145 to 66 million years), the researchers were able to gain insight into how feathers evolved during this era. 'Feathers are critical for the flight of birds,' the team led by researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) said in a paper published in the peer-reviewed journal Science Bulletin on May 13. An essential feature of the evolution of birds was the development of feathers that helped generate thrust and lift. While modern birds are the direct descendants of dinosaurs, scientists believe that most feathered dinosaurs in the ancient world did not have the same ability to fly, though there has been evidence that some species could glide or have powered flight. When most people picture flying dinosaurs, the creatures they imagine with large, fleshy wings are actually non-dinosaur reptiles that lived in the same era, such as the pterosaurs. The evolution of feathers was an essential part of the evolution from birdlike dinosaurs to the first real birds, though studying this has been difficult as feathers are poorly preserved in the fossil record. Fossils preserved in amber offer a unique opportunity to study soft structures, as objects stuck in the hardened tree resin remain trapped in time. The team was able to obtain three-dimensional structural information about the feathers, providing new evidence for stages in feather evolution and helping to reconstruct the evolutionary path that led to the flight ability of early birds. A feather consists of the rachis, the central shaft of the feather, and two rows of barbs or branches on either side. Each barb also features a row of hairlike barbules on each side. In modern flying birds, the barbules on one side have tiny hooks, while the barbules on the other side have grooves that latch together like Velcro. This creates an interlocking hook-and-groove mechanism that forms a strong, airtight surface that is resistant to the tearing force of the air during flight. The hooklets and spines on the tip of barbules also form an additional locking mechanism called the slide-lock system, which was first described by CAS researchers several years ago. 'These synergistic mechanisms provide bird feathers with super durability and high self-repairing capability,' the researchers said. Current evolutionary models include five feather developmental stages, with the development of the barbules occurring in stage three and the interlocking mechanism appearing in stage four. 'However, the information regarding the evolution of the barbs and barbules [from stage three to stage four] is limited due to challenges in preserving these ultrastructures during fossilisation,' the team said. Some feathers found in Cretaceous amber have had identifiable hooks, but it remains unclear whether they also had corresponding grooves, meaning there was no direct evidence for the evolutionary history behind the locking mechanisms. When examining two types of feathers found in the Burmese amber, designated as Type I and II, the team classified them as belonging to stage three and stage four, respectively. The Type I feathers are more similar to primitive feathers found in non-avian theropods – or three-toed dinosaurs – than modern birds, with slightly curved barbules and no hook-groove mechanism. The Type II feathers had a thicker rachis and asymmetrical barbules like those of modern flight feathers, with clear grooves and hooks that formed an interlocking mechanism. The shape of the barbules would have allowed air to pass through, suggesting weak aerodynamic performance. The team also found nodules on the barbules of one specimen, which are the oldest evidence of the slide-lock system in feathers to date. 'This discovery provides the first evidence that, besides the hook-and-groove mechanism, the slide-lock system was also present during the Cretaceous,' the team said. Their findings indicated that stage four of feather evolution could be divided into two parts: the first with the hook mechanism absent, and the second in which the hooking mechanism and slide-lock mechanism were present. The team also studied melanosomes – the organelles of pigment cells that store melanin – in the Cretaceous feathers and found that the Type I feathers were probably black with a red lustre, while the Type II feathers were a grey or 'penguin-like' black colour. - SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST
