Defence Self-Reliance and 'Operation Sindoor':
PM Modi hailed 'Operation Sindoor' as a demonstration of India's Defence self-reliance. He emphasised that indigenous capabilities, including 'Made-in-India' weapons, enable India to act decisively and independently, proving that national security cannot rely on foreign dependence.
Space sector independence:
Celebrating the remarkable achievements of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, PM Modi announced ambitious plans for India's very own space station, signalling a new era of indigenous space capabilities. He highlighted that over 300 startups are actively innovating in satellites, exploration, and cutting-edge space technologies, ensuring that India is not just participating but leading globally in space science and exploration.
Clean and renewable energy:
PM Modi stressed the importance of energy independence, saying that for the bright future of the nation's youth and for welfare of farmers, this has to be done. He declared that while the world debated global warming, India had resolved to achieve 50 per cent clean energy by 2030, yet, thanks to the commitment of its people, that goal was met by 2025.
Solar, Nuclear, hydro, and hydrogen energy have been advanced, marking a decisive step towards energy independence.
PM Modi highlighted India's focus on expanding Nuclear energy through private sector participation. He noted that 10 new Nuclear reactors are currently operational and emphasised that by India's 100th year of Independence, the nation aims to increase its Nuclear energy capacity tenfold, strengthening energy self-reliance and supporting sustainable growth.
National critical minerals mission:
To secure resources essential for energy, industry, and Defence, India has launched the National Critical Minerals Mission, exploring 1,200 sites.
PM Modi highlighted that controlling these minerals strengthens strategic autonomy, ensuring India's industrial and Defence sectors remain self-reliant.
National Deepwater Exploration Mission:
India will harness its deepwater energy resources, strengthening energy self-reliance and reducing dependence on foreign fuel imports.
Agricultural self-reliance and fertilisers:
PM Modi stressed the urgent need to produce fertilisers domestically to empower farmers and protect national food security.
Reducing import dependence ensures the nation's agricultural sector thrives independently, safeguarding farmers' welfare and strengthening India's economic sovereignty.
Digital sovereignty and indigenous platforms:
The Prime Minister called on the youth to develop India's own social media platforms and digital infrastructure, ensuring communication, data, and technological ecosystems remain secure and independent, reinforcing India's digital autonomy.
Self-reliance in medicines and innovation:
The Prime Minister highlighted India's strength as the 'pharmacy of the world' and stressed the urgent need to invest more in research and development.
He asked, 'Shouldn't we be the ones providing the best and most affordable medicines for the welfare of humanity?'
He also highlighted India's growing strength in domestic pharmaceutical innovation, emphasising the need to develop new medicines, vaccines, and life-saving treatments entirely within India.
Drawing inspiration from India's COVID-19 response, where indigenous vaccines and platforms like CoWin saved millions of lives globally, he urged the nation to expand this spirit of innovation.
Championing swadeshi:
He urged citizens and shopkeepers to champion India-made goods under the 'Vocal for Local' initiative, stressing that swadeshi should stem from pride and strength, not compulsion.
Mission Sudarshan Chakra:
PM Modi announced the launch of 'Mission Sudarshan Chakra', aimed at neutralising enemy Defence infiltrations and enhancing India's offensive capabilities.
He linked the mission to Lord Krishna's 'Sudarshan Chakra', highlighting how India draws inspiration from its rich cultural and mythological heritage to guide modern Defence innovations.
This mission underscores India's commitment to strategic autonomy, ensuring rapid, precise, and powerful responses to any threat.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of using the country's 79th Independence Day address to glorify the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and V.D. Savarkar. 'It's not acceptable at all as the attempt to project the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and V.D. Savarkar as central figures in India's independence movement. Choosing Independence Day itself to glorify those who compromised with colonial powers is being seen as an insult to the freedom struggle,' Vijayan wrote on social media. Moreover, the decision of the Union Petroleum Ministry's Independence Day greeting card placing Savarkar's image above Gandhi's is nothing but a part of a larger conspiracy to rewrite history,' added Vijayan. 'India's independence movement was a collective battle, cutting across caste, creed, language, and religion. In contrast, the RSS distanced itself from the movement and openly opposed its ideological foundations. Instead of inclusive Indian nationalism, it promoted a majoritarian Hindutva vision,' added Vijayan. Citing history, Vijayan further pointed out that when the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on November 26, 1949, the RSS mouthpiece Organizer editorialised that the Manusmriti should have been the guiding text instead of the Constitution. Similarly, the Hindu Mahasabha under Savarkar had even boycotted the celebrations of August 15, 1947. 'Those who turned their backs on the freedom struggle are now attempting to insert themselves into its history, while sidelining real martyrs, such as those of the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising or the victims of the Wagon Tragedy. Those who call for commemorating Partition horrors on August 14 have little moral standing to lecture the nation on Independence Day,' wrote Vijayan. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to visit India on Monday
Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi is set to visit India on August 18 (Monday) for the 24th Round of Talks Between the Special Representatives of China and India on the Boundary Question, Beijing confirmed on Saturday. "From August 18 to 20, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Minister of Foreign Affairs and China's Special Representative on the China-India boundary question Wang Yi will visit India and hold the 24th Round of Talks Between the Special Representatives of China and India on the Boundary Question at the invitation of the Indian side," the Chinese Ministry for Foreign Affairs said in a statement. The visit is scheduled to take place shortly before Prime Minister Narendra Modi travels to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit scheduled to take place at Tianjin, from August 31 to September 1. The Chinese side also welcomed PM Modi's participation in the SCO Summit. At a briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, "China welcomes Prime Minister Modi to China for the SCO Tianjin Summit. We believe that with the concerted effort of all parties, the Tianjin summit will be a gathering of solidarity, friendship and fruitful results, and the SCO will enter a new stage of high-quality development featuring greater solidarity, coordination, dynamism and productiveness." According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, leaders of over 20 countries, including all member states of the SCO and heads of 10 international organisations, will attend relevant events of the summit, which, Jiakun said, will be the "largest summit in scale since the establishment of the SCO." This will be PM Modi's first visit to China since the Galwan clash in 2020, which severely strained bilateral ties. The breakthrough in bilateral talks, first after the Galwan Valley face-off between the soldiers of the two countries at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in June 2020, was made possible after India and China reached an agreement on patrolling along the nearly 3500-km LAC to end the four-year-long border confrontation. In July, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited China to attend the Meeting of the Council of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Tianjin. He also held discussions with his Chinese counterpart on the sidelines of the meeting. He also called on Chinese President Xi Jinping, along with his fellow SCO Foreign Ministers. Earlier in June, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited China to attend the SCO Defence Ministers Meeting. India had refused to endorse the joint declaration at the SCO Defence Ministers' meeting, citing the exclusion of concerns around terrorism as a key reason. India stated that it wanted concerns about terrorism reflected in the document, which was not acceptable to one particular country; therefore, the statement was not adopted. During his visit, Singh met his Chinese counterpart, Admiral Don Jun, and the two leaders had a "constructive and forward-looking exchange of views" on issues related to bilateral ties. In June, National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval also visited China to attend the 20th Meeting of the SCO Security Council Secretaries. In his intervention at the meeting, he highlighted the need to shun double standards in the fight against terrorism and take decisive actions against UN-proscribed terrorists and entities like LeT, JeM and their proxies and dismantle their terror eco-systems.

In a statement shared on X, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh emphasized the party's stance, asserting that the GST should genuinely be a Good and Simple Tax, rather than a "Growth Suppressing Tax." "The Indian National Congress demands an official discussion paper on GST 2.0 very soon so that there can be an informed and wider debate on this vital and pressing national issue. GST 2.0 should be truly a Good and Simple Tax (GST) in letter, spirit, and compliance, not like the Growth Suppressing Tax (GST) it has become," he said. Referring to the PM's announcement on Independence Day, Jairam Ramesh remarked, "PM seem to have finally woken up" and acknowledged the need for transformation to drive economic growth. "Over the last seven years, the spirit of GST has been vitiated by an increased number of rates and the granting of multiple exemptions. The structure also seems to have facilitated evasion. There must be a drastic reduction in the number of rates. Simplification of the rate structure is essential, but must be done in a manner that minimises revenue uncertainty to states and also eliminates the classification disputes that have become so common. The GST compensation cess expires on March 31, 2026. This must be extended to offset any revenue uncertainty from the rationalisation of the rate structure," Jairam Ramesh commented. He also asserted Congress' stance on demanding the changes saying, "For well over a year and a half at least, the Indian National Congress has been calling for a radically transformed GST 2.0. This was a key pledge in its manifesto for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections." The Congress leader also pointed to the concerns of MSMEs, which are key employment generators in the economy. He suggested that beyond procedural changes, there should be an increase in the thresholds for interstate supplies. Additionally, sector-specific issues in areas like textiles, tourism, exports, handicrafts, and agricultural inputs need to be addressed. Ramesh also proposed incentivizing states to implement state-level GST for sectors like electricity, alcohol, petroleum, and real estate. This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a significant reform in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) aimed at providing relief to consumers and small businesses. Speaking on Independence Day from the Red Fort, PM Modi revealed that these GST revisions would be introduced around Diwali, calling them a "double Diwali gift" for the nation. PM Modi said, "This Diwali, I am offering you a 'double Diwali' gift. A major announcement is on the way for the people of the country. Over the past eight years, we have implemented a significant GST reform that has reduced the tax burden nationwide. Now, after eight years, it's time for a review. We have established a high-powered committee to initiate this review process and have consulted with the states. We are now introducing next-generation GST reforms, which will serve as a Diwali gift for the nation. " He further explained that tax rates on essential goods and daily necessities would be reduced under a simplified framework, providing significant relief and convenience.
