Lee stresses commitment to protecting people's safety, peace
President Lee Jae-myung stressed Saturday his commitment to protecting the safety of the people and maintaining peace, a day after presiding over a series of meetings on the economy and security.
Lee made the remarks in an Instagram post as he shared his schedule the previous day, including a meeting with the heads of the nation's top five conglomerates and an emergency economic-security meeting over Israel's military strikes against Iran.
"The most important mission in politics is to protect the people's safety and peace," Lee said, vowing to become a "reliable fence" for the people to carry on with their daily lives without worry.
Lee said he would work with businesses to come up with ways to respond to U.S. trade pressure, and take measures to ensure the safety of South Koreans overseas amid the conflict in the Middle East. (Yonhap)

Lee to hold 1st meeting with EU leaders during G7 summit
BRUSSELS -- President Lee Jae-myung is set to meet with top European Union officials during the upcoming Group of Seven summit in Canada, the EU office said Friday, which would mark his first diplomatic engagement with EU leadership since taking office. Lee will meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa on the sidelines of the G7 summit, the EU spokesperson's office said in response to Yonhap News Agency's question. Lee's attendance at the G7 summit in Alberta from June 15 to 17 will serve as his international diplomatic debut, coming less than two weeks after assuming the presidency last week. Following Lee's victory in the presidential election, von der Leyen had expressed her anticipation for "deepening the strong bond between Europe and the Republic of Korea" in a post on X. "Our partnership is built on shared values and common interests, from trade, to innovation and defense. Together, we can champion a rules-based global order, free and fair trade, and a free, open Indo-Pacific," she said, adding, "The next EU–Republic of Korea Summit will be the occasion to take all this forward." [Photo News] Lee Jae-myung visits border village on Day 2 of border tranquility
President Lee Jae-myung on Friday met residents at a hamlet known as Unification Village, or Tongil Chon, near South Korea's border with North Korea as he visited Jangdan-myeon in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. The meeting was held at a community service center that is 2 kilometers east of Dorasan Station, the railway station closest to North Korea. The station has been operating since 2002. Friday marked the second day since loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts stopped between the two Koreas. Following Lee's order to suspend the daily broadcasts Wednesday at 2 p.m. — for the first time in about a year — North Korea turned off its loudspeakers on Thursday. Lee told residents he was relieved to learn that North Korea stopped the loudspeaker broadcasts after South Korea did so, as it solved noise-related problems at the border village stemming from the broadcasts. Lee's stop there followed his visit to the South Korean Army base of the 25th Infantry Division to meet about 50 officers, noncommissioned officers and soldiers combined, and a village in Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi Province, which is about 20 kilometers south of the borderline.
