Corpn suspends 6 bill collectors over property tax scam
2
Madurai: Madurai corporation on Tuesday suspended six bill collectors for allegedly tampering with property tax records on the Urban Tree Information System (UTIS) portal. The order was issued by corporation commissioner Chitra Vijayan following an internal review and amid a police investigation into widespread tax manipulation.
The suspension of bill collectors P Karunakaran, M Kannan, K Ramalingam, P Ravichandran, P Aathimoolam, Ranjith Selvakumar, and Felix Rajamanickam comes a week after the resignation of all five zonal chairpersons over their alleged involvement in altering property tax data in the portal in exchange for favours, leading to significant revenue loss for the corporation. Notably, the same set of officials, except Karunakaran, was suspended earlier in Aug 2024 by the then commissioner, C Dinesh Kumar, when the scam was unearthed.
However, the suspensions were later revoked following protests by the bill collectors' association. Recently, five temporary employees deployed in the revenue section were also suspended, and the contract of the manpower agency to the revenue department of the corporation was cancelled.
The current probe, led by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) of Madurai city police, has intensified with the questioning of five zonal chairpersons who submitted their resignations last week on chief minister M K Stalin's directive. Police sources said that summons have been issued to at least seven more councillors and more bill collectors are under scrutiny. A senior corporation official confirmed that based on statements from the accused, one former assistant commissioner, who has since been transferred from Madurai, is also being questioned.

Kidnapper's IP address masking skills leave Bengaluru cops stunned
Bengaluru: As the long arm of law finally caught up with the mastermind behind the kidnap-murder of a teenage boy in the city, the one question that has left the sleuths flummoxed is: How could an ordinary driver be so adept at handling virtual private networks (VPN) and voice over internet protocol (VoIP), deftly concealing his identity while making ransom calls? Investigators suspect accused Gurumuthy had picked up the skills from his brother — a constable who earlier worked in the social media wing of Bengaluru City Police and is currently deployed at the Indian embassy in a Middle Eastern country. Initially, cops assumed Gurumurthy was a professional criminal who was using an overseas phone number to make calls to 13-year-old victim Nischith's parents for a Rs 5 lakh ransom. He was typing in English, but the messages showed in Hindi on the recipient's phone," a police officer said. "Trying to track the number using conventional methods was futile as the accused made the calls either through VPN or VoIP," the officer added. Inspector Kumaraswamy B G, as part of a 20-member police team, raced against time to pin down Gurumurthy, even as the latter kept changing his location between Doddakallasandra and Yelachenahalli, going offline intermittently. To track him down, police, too, used technology, with assistance from the state intelligence unit and the central crime branch (CCB). As the cat-and-mouse game continued for some time, DCP Narayana got an inkling about Gurumurthy's other mobile number and finally tracked him down. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "We are shocked by his technical skills. He knew how to evade the police. He used all his techniques while demanding ransom from the boy's mother. Once Gurumurthy recovers from the bullet injury, we will take him into custody for further investigation," a senior officer said.

Bengaluru police book 43 social media accounts on actress Ramya's complaint of online abuse over post on Darshan
The Bengaluru police on Tuesday booked a case on a complaint filed by actress and former Congress MP Ramya against 43 social media accounts for allegedly sending vulgar and threatening messages to her over a social media post on the Renukaswamy murder case, in which popular Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa is an accused. A Central Crime Branch (CCB) officer of the rank of deputy commissioner of police will supervise the investigation, officials said. In her complaint filed on Monday, Ramya claimed that the social media accounts were being operated by Darshan Thoogudeepa's fans. Darshan was arrested on June 11 last year with his friend Pavithra Gowda and 15 others in connection with the murder of Renukaswamy, a resident of Chitradurga, who had allegedly sent derogatory messages to Gowda. Darshan was released on October 30, 2024, on interim bail after spending 131 days in jail. On December 13, 2024, the Karnataka High Court granted regular bail to Darshan and Pavithra Gowda. Recently, after the state government challenged the bail granted to Darshan, the Supreme Court criticised the high court order in the case. Ramya made a social media post about the Supreme Court remarks, after which she said she received abusive, vulgar, and threatening messages on social media. The police registered the case under sections 67 (publishing or transmitting of obscene material in electronic form) and 66 C (identity theft) of the Information Technology Act and sections 351 (criminal intimidation), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 75 (sexual harassment), and 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Home Minister G Parameshwara said the police were initiating the action considering the seriousness of the issue. 'Such behaviour affects not just Ramya but potentially any woman. We need to 'put a full stop to this' pattern of online abuse,' he added.
