SCI-FI black comedy film Mickey 17 is out now in theatres.
Based on the science fiction novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, the movie follows Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), a man who joins a space colony as an 'expandable', a disposable worker selected for dangerous tasks, who gets cloned every time he dies for research purposes, with his memories remaining intact. However, things go wrong with one regeneration!
This is South Korean director Bong Joon Ho's third English language production. He is best known for his 2019 black comedy thriller Parasite, which was the first foreign film to win the Best Picture honour at the 2020 Academy Awards.
Speaking about working on films that aren't in his native language, Bong said in an interview, 'I had a co-writer or dialogue-polishing writer for those projects. Mostly I relied heavily on the actors in regards to the language of the film. With Mickey 17, it was Rob.'
'I relied heavily on Rob. He has such a unique and amazing linguistic sensibility. Especially with Mickey 18 (a character in the film), he improvised a lot of really fun dialogue, a lot of which was not scripted.
'It was another great lesson in realising that you need to work with amazing actors to overcome, I guess, what you can call a 'linguistic handicap' I have, where it's not my native language. It's working with very trusted actors and also a great translator,' he added.
The director also revealed that he has been working on an animation film since 2019 that includes a crew of more than 100 artists.
'It's a really unique story about deep sea creatures that features very adorable creature protagonists,' he said. 'We also have human characters. It's a very unique CGI animated film, and it's really going. It's under works now. 2027, maybe,' he revealed.

‘Squid Game' Director Honoured at Gotham Awards for Global Impact

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the visionary behind Netflix's global sensation Squid Game, was awarded the prestigious Creator Tribute at the Gotham Awards in New York on Monday, in recognition of his groundbreaking contribution to television. Accepting the award in English, Hwang described the continuing success of Squid Game as 'a miracle,' reflecting on how a once-rejected Korean script became a worldwide phenomenon over 12 years. 'Four years ago, when Squid Game won the Breakthrough Series Award, I called it a miracle,' Hwang said. 'Standing here again tonight, I believe that miracle still continues.' Hwang's remarks struck a humble tone, especially when reflecting on the meaning behind the Gotham trophy. 'It's not shiny or fancy like an Emmy or an Oscar,' he said. 'But it reminds us not to be blinded by the glamor of success and to carry the responsibility that comes with it.' Actor Lee Jung-jae, who portrays the main character Seong Gi-hun, introduced Hwang during the ceremony. 'What sets Squid Game apart is the depth of Director Hwang's vision,' Lee said, praising the series for its sharp critique of inequality and human resilience beneath its thrilling exterior. The Creator Tribute, a category introduced in 2023, honours creators who challenge the limits of television. The Gotham Awards committee described Hwang's work as 'high-stakes storytelling combined with sharp cultural commentary.'

Shattering silence

Author Kristen L Berry's novel We Don't Talk About Carol hits the shelves on June 3. The mystery thriller tackles the story of Sydney Singleton, who, upon her grandmother's passing, finds a hidden photograph of a little girl, who she discovers to be her aunt Carol who went missing in the 1960s. Nobody has spoken about what really happened to Sydney's long-lost aunt, but upon discovering the photo, she becomes determined to unravel the truth and break the sinister silence around it. The writer and communications executive with a bachelor's degree in English and literature has worked with leading consumer brands for nearly 20 years while writing in her spare time, and is now finally making her debut in the literary world. 'For as long as I can remember, whenever I've visited a bookstore or a library, I've gone to the fiction shelves to find the place where my future book would live. It's so surreal to think that before long, I'll actually be able to find my novel on that bookshelf,' Kristen said in a social media post. 'I'm so fortunate to have so many friends, loved ones and critique partners who believed in this book and generously contributed their time and energy to help me improve it before the first draft was complete,' she added.
