Angels manager Ron Washington to miss rest of season with unspecified medical issue

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington will miss the rest of the season because of an unspecified medical issue, the team said Friday.
Washington, the oldest manager in the major leagues at 73, has been sidelined for the past week. He experienced shortness of breath and appeared fatigued toward the end of a four-game series at the New York Yankees that ended on June 19. He flew back to Southern California, underwent a series of tests and was placed on medical leave.
Bench coach Ray Montgomery, who had been filling in for Washington, was named interim manager, and infield coach Ryan Goins was promoted to bench coach.
Washington has a 664-611 record in 10 seasons as a major league manager, eight with Texas and two with Los Angeles. He led the Rangers to back-to-back World Series in 2010 and 2011.
The Angels were 40-40 entering Friday night's game against visiting Washington.

Cubs' Kyle Tucker, Ryan Pressly return to Daikin Park for first time since Astros traded them

HOUSTON (AP) — Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly returned to Daikin Park on Friday for the first time since the Houston Astros traded them to the Chicago Cubs during the offseason and were greeted by a video tribute before the start of the game. The two stepped out of the Cubs dugout and tipped their caps to the fans while getting a standing ovation. 'Obviously, we are here to do our job and win some games, but it's nice to at least catch up with some of the guys over there that I played with for awhile and been around, so it is cool in that sense' Tucker said earlier. A three-time All-Star right fielder eligible for free agency after the season, the 28-year-old Tucker is hitting .287 with 16 home runs and 49 RBIs. He was swapped in December for outfielder Cam Smith, infielder Isaac Paredes and right fielder Hayden Wesneski. Pressly, a 36-year-old right-hander, is 2-2 with five saves and a 3.90 ERA. The two-time All-Star closer was dealt in January for minor league right-hander Juan Bello. Tucker was part of Astros teams that reached six straight AL Championship Series and caught the final out of the 2022 World Series against Philadelphia. 'There's a lot of really good memories here,' Tucker said. 'We had a lot of success playing in this city and on this field. It's cool. The biggest thing is being around the guys in those moments.' Pressly earned the save in Game 6 of the 2022 World Series. 'A lot of memories were made out on that field,' Pressly said. 'A lot of lifetime friendships made on the other side as well. I always root for these guys. They were great teammates. I was super fortunate and blessed to share a clubhouse with a couple of those guys who are pretty much legends over there in this city.' Houston entered an AL West-best 48-33 record, identical to the record of the NL Central-leading Cubs. 'Every time they lose someone, they always seem to replace them with someone who is really good and kind of pick up the baton right behind them and keep winning. It's what they've been doing for the past decade now," Pressly said of the Astros. "It was fun to watch when I was on the team, but now that I'm not on the team, it's not fun to watch. It's always been a good team. It's going to be fun.'

Los Angeles Angels' Manager Ron Washington To Miss Rest Of Season

Los Angeles Angels manager Ron Washington will miss the rest of the 2025 season while on medical leave for an unspecified condition. Angels bench coach Ray Montgomery was named the interim manager for the remainder of the year, general manager Perry Minasian said. A baseball 'lifer' who is considered one of the best infield instructors in the game, Washington left the Angels last weekend after experiencing fatigue and shortness of breath toward the end a four-game series against the New York Yankees that concluded June 19. Washington underwent testing after returning to Southern California and subsequently was placed on medical leave June 20. Washington is 'in good spirits,' Minasian told the Orange County (Calif.) Register on Friday, saying that he had spoken to Washington three times that during the day. Washington, 73, is the oldest manager in the majors. 'He understands what needs to be done (but) I'm not going to go into details, Minasian told reporters before Friday's game against the Washington Nationals. 'That's for him to tell if he decides to. For me, I'm excited for him to do what he needs to do. Forget about the baseball stuff, just get healthy because he's a great human being. And anybody that's around him on a daily basis, he's somebody that you want around, right? So we're going to miss him.' Montgomery, 55, has an extensive professional resume, and this will be his first managerial job. The Angels are 4-2 since Montgomery took over for Washington last week, and they entered Friday's game on a three-game winning streak, extending a strong run that began during Washington's last few games. While not projected to be a strong contender in the American League West, the Angels have won seven of their last 10 and were 40-40, one game out of the final AL wild card spot as the midway point approached. The Angels made only limited changes in the offseason after going a franchise-worst 63-99 in 2024 in their first year without Shohei Ohtani. Their biggest additions were closer Kenley Jansen and starter Kyle Hendricks while banking Mike Trout's return to health. They have nine straight losing seasons and 10 straight seasons without making the playoffs, the longest active streaks in both areas. Washington is 767-750 in 10 seasons as a major league manager, the last two with the Angeles following an eight-year run with the Texas Rangers that included back-to-back World Series appearances in 2011-12. He was the third base coach with the Oakland A's for 13 seasons before and after his tenure in Texas that ended 2014, and he also served six seasons as the third base coach in Atlanta before taking the Angels' job in 2023. 'In my opinion, and I think a lot of people's opinion, the game of baseball is 1,000 times better when Ron Washington's part of it on a daily basis – we all know that,' Minasian told the Register. 'There are certain people that are just different, special, whatever term you want to use. … When I see him, my day is better, and when I talk to him, my day is better. He knows what he needs to do, and from a health standpoint, he knows how to get better.' Ron Washington celebrates after his 2010 Texas Rangers beat the New York Yankees to make the World ... More Series. (Photo) Montgomery worked as the scouting director for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers before becoming the Angels' player personnel director in 2020. He became the bench coach in 2021 when Minasian took over as general manager, and served in that capacity while Joe Maddon and Phil Nevin were the managers before Washington. Ryan Goins, who played eight seasons in the majors was promoted to bench coach after joining the Angels as the infield coach in 2024.

Jayden Daniels Aims Comical Remark at Commanders New Addition

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. During the 2024 season, the Washington Commanders saw the franchise's trajectory change in the blink of an eye. Now on a new course towards contention, the front office wasted little time making win-now moves in the offseason. Washington's offense went through a big change last season as former No. 2 pick Jayden Daniels took the reins at quarterback. He quickly took the league by storm, drastically improving the Commanders' play on the side of the ball with his combination of speed and throwing ability. Daniels' presence resulted in Washington winning double-digit games and punching their ticket to the postseason. The Commanders' run didn't end there, as Daniels was able to carry his positive momentum into the postseason. He helped Washington get within arm's reach of a Super Bowl appearance before getting eliminated at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles. Their biggest swing in the offseason was trading for wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Paired with Terry McLaurin (whenever his holdout comes to an end), he will provide Daniels with a pair of wideouts capable of ripping off a big play at any moment. Still in the early stages of their time together, Daniels seems to approve of the Commanders' latest offensive addition. While at "Fanatic Fest" last week, the rising star gave his thoughts on Samuel entering the fold. Daniels jokingly said he can't wait for veteran WR to inflate his passing numbers with his dynamic skill set. "I'm excited to throw him a little screen and hopefully on the stat sheet it says a touchdown for 80 yards and I didn't have to do any of the work," Daniels said with a grin. Across 15 appearances, he racked totaled 670 yards and three touchdowns. Both are the third-lowest marks for any given season in his career. Now with a chance of scenery, Samuel has a chance to get back in the conversation with the league's best wideouts. He is flanked by a young QB who is looking to make a name for himself and isn't scared to let the ball fly. Also, with McLaurin drawing attention from opposing secondary, lanes should open up for Samuel to impact games on a weekly basis. After being part of a handful of deep runs in San Francisco, Samuel will now attempt to help his new team rise to contender status in the NFC.
