Thailand pledges full care, aid for Malaysian tourists burnt in Ratchadamri incident

BANGKOK - The Thai government will provide compensation to two Malaysian tourists who were set on fire by an unemployed man on Ratchadamri Road here on Thursday night.
Permanent Secretary of the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Natreeya Taweewong, reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to providing the best possible care and assistance to the victims until they are able to return home safely.
"The ministry will also provide assistance under the Thai government's compensation measures, including medical expenses and emotional distress compensation to both victims,' she said in a statement on Monday.
According to Natreeya, medical expenses will be reimbursed according to actual costs stated in receipts, up to a maximum of 500,000 baht, while emotional distress compensation will amount to 50,000 baht.
"This brings the total compensation to a maximum of 550,000 baht per person. The government will consider additional assistance as appropriate based on the situation, with other cases subject to the discretion of the attending physicians,' she said.
She said the ministry in collaboration with all relevant agencies, will ensure the best possible medical care, logistical support and psychological assistance for the injured Malaysian tourists.
Natreeya said the condition of both victims have significantly improved, with the female tourist now able to communicate through writing.
She acknowledged that while families of the victims have expressed their wishes to transfer them back to Malaysia for further treatment, doctors have not recommended travel at this time.
"Therefore, the patients will continue to receive treatment in Thailand for the time being,' she said.
The two Malaysians, Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, and Ong Yik Leong, 26, were attacked by an unemployed man who allegedly doused them with thinner before setting them alight near a shopping mall on Ratchadamri Road at around 10 pm on Thursday.
Gan is currently receiving treatment at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital for second-degree burns over 36 per cent of her body, including her face, chest, and arm, while Ong is being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Police General Hospital for second-degree burns to his upper body, both front and back. - BERNAMA

A clip of the man hoisting the Jalur Gemilang upside down went viral on social media today. The video, posted on Facebook, showed the man raising the national flag incorrectly while another individual recorded the incident.

Responding to queries from Tuan Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) and Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong) in the Dewan Rakyat, she addressed the status of investigations involving two Home Ministry officers, one individual, former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, and the late former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin. Azalina confirmed that the investigation into the Home Ministry officials arrested on May 8 over allegations of corruption related to expedited citizenship confirmations is still underway. "The MACC is bound by subsection 29(4) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, which restricts the disclosure of investigation details," she said on Tuesday (Aug 12). She added that one high-profile case involving a politician is under judicial consideration, making it inappropriate for discussion in Parliament as per the Standing Order. "The MACC is similarly restricted from disclosing any details related to ongoing investigations, under the MACC Act 2009," she added.

Farmer fined RM15,000 for offensive 3R post on Facebook

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A farmer was fined RM15,000 by the Sepang sessions court today for making and transmitting an offensive communication regarding a 3R (religion, race and royalty) issue via his Facebook page last February. Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman imposed the fine on Faisal Yusof, 37, after he changed his plea to guilty when the case was called up for mention, Bernama reported. Before meting out the sentence, the judge warned Faisal to be more cautious when using social media. 'You deleted the comment, but look what has happened, it persists even after deletion. You're still young, you need to think long and hard,' he was quoted as saying. Faisal was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for making and transmitting the offensive communication via his Facebook account 'Mohd Faisal Yusof' with the intention of causing annoyance to others. The posting, made at 12.40am on Feb 9, was subsequently deleted but was still detected by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission at 1.40pm on the same day. The offence carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or up to one year in jail, or both, with additional daily fines if the offence continues after conviction.
