
World Brain Day 2025: Experts Say Mental Health In Workplace Is Important, "Stress Is Not A Badge Of Honour"
"With the work and hustle culture, mental health can no longer be neglected or ignored," Dr Maitri Thakker, clinical psychologist, told NDTV. "It calls for attention, awareness, responsibility and care."
"We need to understand that stress is not a badge of honour, for chronic stress leads to burnout, sleep difficulties, irritability and other health complications as well," Dr Thakker added.
She added that if stress is left unacknowledged or unaddressed, it spills over into our relationships and plummets self-esteem.
Importance Of Mental Health In The Workplace
Mental health in the workplace has become a crucial aspect of employee well-being and productivity. It addresses how individuals manage stress and make decisions in their roles.
From tight deadlines to blurred work-life boundaries, the modern workplace can very easily become both: a source of purpose and a space of long-term stress and tension.
Dr Thakker said that we show up to work every day with not only our abilities but also our anxieties and stress, and also our coping mechanisms, which are both healthy and unhealthy.
Employees who manage their mental health effectively are more focused and efficient. Addressing such issues can lead to lower absenteeism rates, as it is expected that employees will take less time off due to stress or illness.
Dr Thakker stated that a workplace that promotes mental health fosters positive relationships, reduces conflicts and creates a more collaborative culture. Such workplaces also have lower turnover rates because employees feel valued and don't seek employment in other companies.
Depression, anxiety and burnout are some of the common mental health issues in the workplace. Here are some simple tips to implement changes:
Mental health check-ins: Employees can start conversations about how people are actually doing.
Change at senior level: If the change happens at the top level, employees would feel like they also have a space to express.
Draw boundaries: Avoid after-work hours communication, celebrate the small wins, reward outcomes rather than rewarding overworking.
Take Care Of Your Brain
Dr Deep Das, a neurologist at CMRI Kolkata, told NDTV, "The brain is the only organ that defines who we are-our thoughts, memories, and choices. It can't be replaced, transplanted, or rebooted."

Is Chicory Root In Your Coffee Acidic While chicory enhances the flavour and aroma of coffee, it may affect your gut. Somana noted that excessive chicory could trigger acidity. Science supports this claim. While chicory is slightly less acidic than coffee itself, overconsumption can lead to gastrointestinal discomfort, including bloating and flatulence. A study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that chicory inulin products, though high in fibre, may increase digestive symptoms mildly. Interestingly, some people who blame coffee for their acidity might actually be reacting to the chicory mixed in it. Some studies have also found that chicory root is good for digestion, when taken in moderation. "Chicory is generally added to reduce the bitterness of coffee," Pavithra N Raj, Chief Dietician at Manipal Hospital, Yeshwantpur, Bangaluru, Karnataka, told NDTV. "However, filter coffee without chicory tends to be less acidic. Adding chicory may make the coffee more acidic, and might lead to more digestive issues. The percentage of chicory in your coffee powder should not exceed 20-30%," adds the expert. Is Drinking 100% Pure Coffee Good For You This leads to an obvious question: If additives like chicory can complicate digestion, is pure coffee a better choice? For the uninitiated, 100% pure coffee is just natural coffee and water - no blends, no filter. Turns out, pure coffee, particularly black coffee, offers several health benefits when consumed in moderation. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, coffee contains antioxidants that offer these nine health benefits Boosts energy Enhances focus Keeps your blood sugar levels in check Good for your heart health May even help you live longer Reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease Lower chances of getting colon cancer Promotes liver health Decreases Parkinson's Disease risk Dietitian Pavithra N Raj says, "Pure coffee is also believed to help you lose weight. Many people prefer to drink it before they hit the gym. So, it is okay to drink pure coffee as long as you are drinking it in moderation." "There is no harm in drinking chicory coffee or plain black coffee. These instant coffee powders usually contain less chicory content and more coffee, which again is not harmful to a person. So, you can drink both types but in moderation," concludes the expert. While chicory root can lead to acidity, it is not all bad. You can have it but in moderation, as the expert recommends. Brain tumours: when a headache, memory lapse, or seizure deserves a second look
Every year, over 40,000 individuals in India are diagnosed with brain tumours, according to data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Yet, in many cases, the diagnosis comes too late. The early warning signs—often subtle, fleeting, or mistaken for everyday stress—are overlooked until symptoms become severe. Following the observance of World Brain Day on July 22 , it is vital to recognise that timely diagnosis and multidisciplinary care can make a significant difference in not only survival, but also in long-term recovery and quality of life for patients and their families. When the body whispers Brain tumours are complex. They vary in type, location, and behaviour—and so do their symptoms. In clinical practice, I often see patients who, in hindsight, experienced signs long before their diagnosis. These early symptoms are frequently dismissed as benign issues: a tension headache, forgetfulness, vision strain, or clumsiness. Common symptoms of brain tumours include: Persistent or worsening headaches Memory lapses or personality changes Difficulty in speaking or finding words Blurred or double vision New-onset seizures Trouble with balance or coordination It is important to understand that many of these symptoms—particularly headaches, giddiness, or occasional forgetfulness—are very common and more often than not due to benign conditions like migraines, tension headaches, or positional vertigo. Not every headache warrants a brain scan. However, when these symptoms are unusual in pattern, progressively worsening, or accompanied by other neurological signs, a medical evaluation is essential. The key challenge is that these symptoms can appear mild or sporadic, leading to delays in seeking medical attention. But when the brain is affected—even subtly—it often tries to signal distress. We need to listen more closely. Children are not immune One of the most overlooked realities is that brain tumours affect children too. Among paediatric populations, tumours in the cerebellum—such as medulloblastoma—are relatively common. The signs, however, may not always be easy to spot. In children, red flags include: Headaches, especially in the morning Repeated vomiting without a clear cause Unsteady gait or difficulty walking Clumsiness or frequent falls Unlike adults, children may not articulate their discomfort clearly. A parent's intuition, in such cases, becomes crucial. Prompt neurological evaluation can lead to early diagnosis and treatment, which significantly improves outcomes. With timely surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and structured rehabilitation, many children not only survive but go on to live full, healthy adult lives. The ripple effects of a brain tumour The impact of a brain tumour extends far beyond the individual. It disrupts family dynamics, imposes financial burdens, and creates emotional strain for caregivers. It can affect workplace productivity and community engagement. That is why recovery must be viewed not just through a medical lens but a social one. When treated early, many patients return to school, work, and community life. The difference lies in how quickly the tumour is recognised and how comprehensively it is managed. The power of modern tools and teamwork Neuro-oncology teams use a suite of advanced tools designed to enhance precision and safety: neuronavigation systems function like GPS during surgery, guiding the surgeon with remarkable accuracy. High-resolution operating microscopes allow us to see deep brain structures clearly. Awake craniotomy enables patients to stay awake during surgery to protect speech and movement centres. Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring helps preserve critical brain functions during complex procedures. Comprehensive post-operative rehabilitation ensures that recovery continues well beyond the operating room. These innovations help us safely access delicate regions of the brain while preserving the patient's independence and cognitive function. A realistic, hopeful outlook While early detection improves prognosis, it is important to acknowledge that not all brain tumours behave predictably. Some aggressive tumours may resist treatment even when diagnosed early. Others may lie dormant and symptom-free for extended periods. That said, the opportunity for meaningful intervention exists at nearly every stage. Whether through surgical removal, chemotherapy, radiation, or supportive therapies, modern neuro-oncology offers real hope—particularly when treatment is tailored to the individual. Brain tumours don't always present dramatically. They may arrive disguised as a persistent headache, an uncharacteristic lapse in memory, or a subtle speech difficulty. In children, they may be hidden behind a morning vomit or a minor fall. These are not signs to ignore. This World Brain Day, let us renew our commitment to awareness and early action. By paying attention to the whispers, we can catch the signs sooner, act faster, and improve the lives of those affected. "Very Disturbing, Alarming": Supreme Court On Rising Stray Dog Bite Cases
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday took suo motu cognisance of a media report about incidents of dog bites leading to rabies and called it "very disturbing and alarming". "The news item contains some alarming and disturbing figures and facts," a bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said. It said every day, hundreds of dog bites were being reported in Delhi and on its outskirts, leading to rabies and ultimately, children and the aged were "falling prey to the dreadful disease". "Let this order be placed along with the news report before the Chief Justice of India for appropriate orders," the bench added. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram, who has been raising the issue, welcomed the move. "At last," he wrote on X, while sharing NDTV's breaking news post on the Supreme Court's suo moto cognisance. At last! — Karti P Chidambaram (@KartiPC) July 28, 2025 Speaking to NDTV last week, he said it was a "serious health and safety problem" in India. He also called for a new national policy to build shelters for the strays across the country. "Move the dogs on the street, sterilise them, vaccinate them and keep them in a safe shelter," he said, adding that "We should increase adoption, but stray dogs can't be on the streets." Over 37 Lakh Dog Bite Cases In India In 2024 The Centre last week said that India reported over 37 lakh dog bite cases and 54 suspected human rabies deaths in 2024. According to data shared by Union Minister SP Singh Baghel in the Parliament on July 22, the total number of dog bite cases stood at 37,17,336, while the total 'suspected human rabies deaths' were 54 last year. He said that municipalities are responsible for controlling the stray dog population, adding that they are implementing the Animal Birth Control Programme to regulate their population. He also said the Centre has notified the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023, under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which focuses on the neutering and anti-rabies vaccination of stray dogs. Elaborating on the steps, he said his ministry issued an advisory in November 2024 to states, asking them to implement the ABC Programme and related activities through local bodies, as part of its objective to ensure the "safety and security of children, especially toddlers, from stray dog attacks".
