Special NCERT module on Partition gets Congress' goat
The module, released by NCERT to mark 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day', drew the ire of the Congress, which demanded that the module be set on fire as it presents a distorted history.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Congress leader Pawan Khera said, 'Is 1938 mentioned or not in the NCERT module? In 1938, the Hindu Mahasabha's national conference in Gujarat announced that Hindus and Muslims could not live in one country. Is 1940 mentioned in the module?' he asked. In 1940, Jinnah adopted the Hindu Mahasabha's idea at the Muslim League's Lahore session. 'It was mooted in 1938 by the Hindu Mahasabha, and Jinnah repeated it in 1940,' he said.
'Burn the document if all this is not mentioned in it. Partition happened due to the nexus between Hindu Mahasabha and Muslim League. Generations will not forgive them,' he said, adding that Mahasabha-Muslim League coalition governments in Bengal, Sindh and North West Frontier Province (NWFP) after 1942, led to Partition.
Responding to the Congress' allegations, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said Rahul Gandhi's 'appeasement politics' mirrors Jinnah's divisive ideology. 'NCERT has brought the truth of Partition to textbooks. The Rahul-Jinnah party is rattled because their role is exposed,' Bhatia said.
NCERT published two separate modules — one for Classes 6 to 8 and another for Classes 9 to 12. These are supplementary resources in English and Hindi, not part of regular textbooks, and are meant to be used through projects, posters, discussions and debates.
The module quotes Jinnah as saying he never thought Partition would happen. 'Later, even Jinnah admitted that he had not expected Partition to happen. He told his aide, 'I never thought it would happen. I never expected to see Pakistan in my lifetime',' it said.

Govt schools lose nearly 5 lakh students in three years
Bengaluru: Student enrolment in govt schools across the state has steadily declined in the post-Covid years, data tabled in the legislative council shows. Statistics from the department of school education and literacy Monday revealed that admissions in state-run primary and high schools have dropped considerably over the past three academic years. Referring to the data, ML Anil Kumar of Congress said student enrolment had fallen by 4.7 lakh. "While student enrolment during 2022-23 was at 45.4 lakh, it reduced to 42.9 lakh. The same numbers during 2024-25 plummeted to 40.7 lakh," Kumar said. "One of the major issues that affects enrolment is the absence of pre-primary sections in govt schools," Bangarappa said. "We have now started about 5,000 LKG-UKG classes besides introducing bilingual education. We are hopeful that these measures will help draw more students to govt schools." "We have received proposals to shut schools with very low student strength. But we have not closed a single primary school on grounds of poor admissions. I assure the House that we will not close any such schools in the future either," he said. However, contradicting the minister's remarks, a high school at Hulikal, Tumakuru district, was shut down in 2023-24 due to inadequate student numbers. Bangarappa also said the govt will complete recruitment of teachers in Kalyana Karnataka region within four months of publication of internal reservation quota. Replying to a calling attention by BJP's CT Ravi in the legislative council, Bangarappa said there are 16,577 teacher posts vacant in govt primary schools in the Kalyana Karnataka and more than 33,527 vacancies in other parts of the state. The govt had authorised filling of 4,882 posts, but the process was suspended due to pending internal reservation issues. Stalin lists questions to ECI, wants SIR scrapped
Chennai: A day after chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar defended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voters list, chief minister M K Stalin said ECI's defence raised several questions rather than providing answers. Saying enrolment of new voters was less, Stalin asked whether young voters were enumerated. "Has any database been compiled to show how many youngsters who turned 18 on the qualifying date were included," he asked. He said the procedure for inquiry and two appeals, under Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, may exclude a huge number of voters in the upcoming Bihar elections. "Is ECI going to address this issue," he asked. "Will ECI take these practical difficulties into account while conducting SIR in other states," he asked. Recalling DMK's petition to ECI on July 17 to delete the deceased votes, Stalin asked when it will be done. He also asked what prevented ECI from enlisting Aadhaar as one of the acceptable documents to prove a voter's claim. He concluded by asking, "If free and fair elections are truly the aim of ECI, why can't it be more transparent and voter-friendly?" Stalin is the latest to join India bloc leaders in criticising ECI for its defence of SIR. While Congress leader Rahul Gandhi flagged a series of issues, including missing voters and the addition of "ghost voters" during SIR in Bihar, other leaders such as Karnataka chief minister K Siddaramaiah also highlighted discrepancies in the data of ECI. Stalin has demanded ECI scrap SIR in other states, particularly TN, and urged DMK functionaries to be wary of addition or deletion of voters in the state.
