EXCLUSIVE Vanity Fair staff 'devastated' after Anna Wintour appoints daughter's best friend to run magazine

Daily Mail19-06-2025
Vanity Fair staff were 'blindsided' and are fiercely unhappy with Anna Wintour 's decision to appoint her daughter's nepo-baby best friend to run the magazine, a source has claimed.
News hit the web last week that the longtime Vogue editor, 75, had picked her daughter, Bee Shaffer's close pal Mark Guiducci, 36, to run Vanity Fair following a high-profile search for the publication's next leader.
Now, an insider has alleged that the decision has sparked immense outrage in the company, claiming that many Vanity Fair staffers feel like Guiducci is 'not qualified' for the job.
'There's a real feeling of devastation and sadness [amongst the Vanity Fair staff],' the source said exclusively to DailyMail.com.
'[They feel] that the person appointed to lead isn't qualified to do this job and isn't an experience editor, he's a family friend of Anna's and her daughter.'
Guiducci started his post-college career in 2010 at Vanity Fair as an assistant.
In 2017, he was named editor-in-chief the art publication GARAGE Magazine, owned by VICE Media. It went out of print four years ago, a year after Guiducci left in 2020.
That same year, he took on the role of creative editorial director Vogue and helped launch Vogue World, an annual fashion and cultural show.
News hit the web last week that the longtime Vogue editor, 75, had picked her daughter, Bee Shaffer's close pal Mark Guiducci, 36, to run Vanity Fair following a high-profile search
'People are not on board with Mark doing this job,' the insider continued, adding that when Guiducci briefly spoke to staff following the announcement it seemed 'clear that he wasn't an experienced editor.'
'When he was talking about the magazine, everything was very vague, there was no clear vision of what he wanted to do,' they alleged.
'When Anna talked to the Conde Nast executives about this job search she initially said she wanted to bring in an experienced journalist like Wired editor-in-chief [Katie Drummond].
'Anna interviewed a lot of accomplished editors and we're not sure why she didn't select one of them... The staff was blindsided by the announcement.'
The source said to make matters worse Wintour jetted off to New York for Huma Abedin's wedding to philanthropist Alex Soros immediately after sharing the news, followed by a vacation, leaving the magazine in chaos.
'After she announced this she went to Huma's wedding then went to a vacation so people on the staff are wondering what they're supposed to do, there's no direction,' the insider dished. 'She just left after announcing this.'
A source close to Wintour, on the other hand, insisted to DailyMail.com that 'Mark was chosen because he was the right person for the role' and no other reasons.
In addition, a separate insider at Vanity Fair stated that 'most of the Vanity Fair staff are excited about the appointment and looking forward to working with Mark.'
The search for a new leader launched in April, when Vanity Fair's former editor-in-chief, Radhika Jones, resigned after seven years. She assumed the role from longtime editor Graydon Carter, who held the job for 25 years.
At the time, Wintour told staff that Jones would help with the transition 'as we start the search for a new editor.'
Now tasked with filling that void is Guiducci, who will be Vanity Fair's first 'global editorial director' rather than the editor-in-chief title held by his predecessors, including the legendary Tina Brown.
Guiducci's friendship with Wintour's daughter Shaffer, 37, has spanned years and the two have been photographed together frequently, often at high-profile parties - something that allegedly hasn't gone unnoticed by the disgruntled Vanity Fair staff.
'Anna has tried to bring Bee more into the fold,' the source claimed. 'The thinking is that having Mark oversee Vanity Fair [will give] Bee an outlet to host parties and be part of the Vanity Fair.'
Former Vanity Fair editor Carter expressed faith in Guiducci as a successor, despite working with him many years ago.
'Having worked with Mark, I know that he has so many of the skills necessary for the job at hand - and many that I did not have,' the iconic editor told Breaker. 'He's the perfect editor for the new Vanity Fair.'
'Congrats to Mark Guiducci, the new editor of Vanity Fair,' Brown separately tweeted. 'He's a fabulous, fresh appointment with bags of flair and fun ideas.'
'People are not on board with Mark doing this job,' the insider continued, adding that when Guiducci spoke to staff following the announcement it seemed 'clear that he wasn't an experienced editor'
In a statement to the New York Times, the 75-year-old Wintour sang a similar tune, describing how great editors 'inspire their colleagues to move with speed, dexterity and thrilling derring-do.'
'That's the magic of Mark,' she said. 'An energetic and creative editor at the center of his generation and a leader under whom Vanity Fair will grow in ways I can foresee and, no doubt, many ways I can't.'
Guiducci also expressed excitement at taking on the job.
'There are all these old-school tools that can be used in new ways,' Guiducci told the Times.
'Cover stars, long lead ambitious investigations, sophisticated visuals - those are all things you can't do on Substack. The difference today is we create them for and publish them on modern platforms.'
'We're going to have fun,' he told the Times separately, when asked about his plans for the magazine. 'I think that's something we're going to need in our culture right now.'
'Beyond proud,' his longtime pal Shaffer wrote on Instagram Tuesday in a story celebrating Guiducci's appointment.
DailyMail.com has reached out to Guiducci and Wintour's representatives for comment.

Jenna Ortega reveals what 'terrifies' her about being a young woman in Hollywood as she covers Vogue

felt in the past she did not have as much power as she does now. While talking to September issue of Vogue México and Latin America this month, the 22-year-old actress - whose has Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage - said she used to not feel heard. The Hollywood veteran was oppressed early in her career, before her smash hit TV series Wednesday hit screens. For many years the former child star did not have a voice on set, she told the publication, and that 'terrified' her. 'I've always known what it feels like not to have a voice, and that terrifies me. I don't ever want to be in that situation again,' she said after stating: 'Being young and assertive is intense for a lot of people, especially as a woman.' Ortega does not reveal which project made her feel like she did not have voice. Ortega's career began with roles in Jane the Virgin and Disney Channel's Stuck in the Middle, but those may not be the shows she was referring to/ She added, 'Now I just want to make sure I use my voice in the most professional, efficient and kind way possible.' These days she is a mix of 'stubborn' when it comes to her work ethic and 'cautious' when dealing with fame which strikes her as 'very strange.' 'I used to be a very extroverted child, but I've become more reserved. It doesn't mean something negative, It just means I choose my words carefully,' she said. And she feels that the character that made her famous would not enjoy her fame. 'It's funny because Wednesday would hate all this attention and obsession—appearing on cereal boxes and T-shirts is so unusual for her,' Ortega said. 'I also think the world of celebrity is very strange. The glorification of someone you'll never truly know fascinates me, and I'm happy to question it anytime.' Ortega also touched on growing up in a Spanish community in Indio, California. Her father is of Mexican descent, and her mother is of Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage. 'It's a fundamental part of who I am. These things don't disappear or change,' she said about growing up Latina. 'I'm very close to my family and my upbringing. I'm from California, so my community, mostly Latino, was my childhood. It's simply what I know.' Ortega said there is 'a lot of pressure' when it comes to meeting the expectations of Latino audiences. 'Sometimes it feels brutal, but then you go home and remember what it's about. You meet a young Chicana in a grocery store, she hugs you, you talk with her mother, and you see how meaningful it can be for people,' noted the star. And there is a struggle: she does not speak Spanish as fluently as she wishes. 'I'm very insecure when I speak Spanish,' admitted the close pal of Catherine Zeta-Jones. 'Even though I feel proud and I know who I am, my upbringing and my story with my culture, I think I've seen some frustration for not having grown up in a Spanish-speaking country,' she said. 'It's difficult for me not being able to speak Spanish fluently, and I try. I speak with my dad in Spanish, I write, I read, but I'm very insecure when I speak and I don't want to offend anyone. That's been a very delicate point for me.' When promoting her film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in 2024, a Latina journalist said, 'You are Latina enough.' The moment went viral, because so many Latin woman feel they are not enough. 'I'll always be proud, always curious, and always learning,' she said. 'Even if my experience is not everyone's, I know where I come from.'

Kevin Costner's surprising career U-turn after Yellowstone bitter exit and $100M Horizon flop

Kevin Costner has made a surprising career move following his bitter departure from the hit TV show Yellowstone after five seasons and box office flop, Horizon. On Monday, Amazon MGM Studios announced the two-time Oscar winner, 70, signed on to star in their upcoming dramedy, Honeymoon with Harry, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. The film centers on a man (Gyllenhaal) who, just days before his wedding, loses his fiancée. In the wake of her sudden death, he chooses to embark on the planned honeymoon trip with his would-be father-in-law (Kostner). Glenn Ficarra and John Requa are set to direct the movie, based on Bart Baker's 2016 book Honeymoon with Harry. This marks Costner's first project since Horizon's lackluster box office performance. After a tough opening weekend upon its release on June 28, 2024, the father-of-seven insisted he was 'really happy' that Horizon 'like what it's supposed to look like' on the big screen. 'That's really important to me in this process,' he told Entertainment Weekly. 'Would I love that it would be highly, highly successful? 'Of course, I'd like that. My ego would like that; everyone would like that. But I am happiest that the movie that you and I are talking about looks the way I want it to look.' In June, the Yellowstone alum announced that he has no intention of slowing down anytime soon. 'I don't even think about retiring, because I'll just move to the next thing that captures my imagination,' he told People. Costner further explained that his own imagination 'is what determines what I do, not a boss.' The Dances with Wolves added, 'I've felt really lucky in my life. I'd like to think that I worked for all of it, but not everybody can live by the same blueprint.' In regards to having a 'bucket list' of what he still wants to do with his career, the actor stated, 'I don't have those things. 'I have that list, [but] I don't refer to it that way. But certainly my eyes and my enthusiasms are wide open and very big.' Costner added that he has 'enjoyed life and imagining what I can do, what can I be about and what makes a difference. Not only to me, but to other people. What just satisfies me? 'I go through that whole idea, and you realize it's about time. It's a rush to get to all of them.' The actor has previously touched on his future in the industry, including during a conversation with AARP in 2019. When questioned if he 'ever thinks' about retiring, the Hollywood star replied, 'I really feel like some of the great surprises I have are in front of me. 'As I play out the second half of my career, I've been doing a lot of writing, and there are projects I still want to do.' He further expressed that his 'life is a lot more than movies. I just periodically pop up in them. In between, I'm living my other life.' Costner began his career when he took on a role in the 1981 movie Sizzle Beach, U.S.A. - also known as Malibu Hot Summer. He went on to make appearances in other films such as Fandango (1985) and The Untouchables (1987). Kevin worked alongside other stars such as Robert De Niro, Andy Garcia and Sean Connery in the crime film - which garnered four Oscar nominations. In 1990, Costner both starred in and directed the Western epic Dances With Wolves - which won him Best Picture and Best Director the following year at the Academy Awards. Other movies the actor is known for is Field Of Dreams (1989), The Bodyguard (1992), Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (1991), Wyatt Earp (1994), Open Range (2003) and Man Of Steel (2013). While Kevin has spent many years on the big screen, he has also taken on roles in television projects - such as the 2012 miniseries Hatfields & McCoys which earned him an Emmy win. He notably portrayed the character of rancher John Dutton in Taylor Sheridan's neo-Western drama series Yellowstone. In 2024, Costner starred in, wrote and directed Horizon: An American Saga - which is set to be followed by three additional movies. The second part premiered earlier this year at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February. It was also screened during the 81st Venice Film Festival last year in September. Chapter 2 was set to hit theaters also last year - however due to low box office numbers, a new release date has yet to be confirmed.

What Hulk Hogan reportedly thought of Newsom

The press office of California Gov. Gavin Newsom recently posted a meme featuring the late Hulk Hogan watching over him - but the WWE icon reportedly 'couldn't stand' the Democratic politician. The sarcastic AI-generated image featured Kid Rock, Tucker Carlson and Hogan (with a halo over his head) with their hands on the shoulders of a sitting Newsom. Linda told the outlet that 'it would be a cold day in hell' for her husband to support Newsom. Paraphrasing their conversation with Lisa, TMZ also wrote that Hogan was ' as far from liberal as you can get,' and that Lisa found the post to be 'pretty lame' (the 'couldn't stand' phrasing was also TMZ's). In fact Hogan, spoke at last year's Republican National Convention in support of Trump, and the president expressed his condolences for his death on Truth Social after his passing in July. 'We lost a great friend today, the 'Hulkster.' Hulk Hogan was MAGA all the way -- Strong, tough, smart, but with the biggest heart,' Trump said. 'He gave an absolutely electric speech at the Republican National Convention, that was one of the highlights of the entire week.' 'He entertained fans from all over the World, and the cultural impact he had was massive. To his wife, Sky, and family, we give our warmest best wishes and love. Hulk Hogan will be greatly missed!' Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, passed away from a heart attack on July 24 - roughly two-and-a-half weeks before what would have been his 72nd birthday. Hogan had also been estranged from Brooke for years (they did reconcile before his death), and the Daily Mail previously reported that she was 'overwhelmed and emotionally drained' following his death. Brooke did not attend Hogan's funeral with family and friends but later held her own memorial for the WWE legend.
