EVs pose threat to manufacturers of engine components, but also open opportunities in advanced tech: Report
The ongoing transition to
electric vehicles (EVs)
is expected to reshape the auto component industry by increasing content per vehicle and creating new avenues for suppliers, according to a recent report by Ambit Capital.
However, it also highlighted that while the rise of EVs poses a threat to manufacturers dependent on internal combustion engine (ICE) components, it also unlocks significant growth opportunities.
''While EV disruption poses existential risk for the suppliers of ICE-dependent components, it opens up several opportunities for the component suppliers to provide a)
EV components
like
li-ion batteries
,
traction motors
, controllers, BMS etc'
It added that the component makers can diversify into EV-specific parts such as lithium-ion batteries, traction motors, controllers, and
battery management systems
(BMS).
Additionally, EVs enable the adoption of advanced technologies like regenerative braking,
advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS)
, and smart cockpits, further boosting the role of suppliers in the value chain.
Another advantage for component suppliers comes from increased demand for certain parts due to
EV architecture
. Components such as wiring harnesses, electronic control units (ECUs), and differential assemblies are expected to see greater content per vehicle compared to traditional ICE vehicles.
EV adoption in India
is projected to grow gradually. Electric two-wheeler (2W) penetration is expected to rise from 6.3 per cent in FY25 to 21 per cent by FY29.
Similarly, passenger vehicle (PV) penetration is likely to grow from 2.6 per cent to 10.4 per cent during the same period. In contrast, electric three-wheelers (3Ws) are expected to witness rapid adoption, surging from 22.9 per cent in FY25 to nearly 68 per cent by FY29.
However, the report cautions that many EV components are currently imported, which may result in intense competition, especially in the early stages of the EV transition.
Despite the growth potential, the shift towards EVs also poses key risks. Suppliers heavily dependent on engine and select transmission components may face existential challenges.
The report also flagged three key challenges for the auto components industry - the USMCA/tariff regime, economic weakness in the EU, and competition from Chinese players.
As
India's auto component industry
is heavily reliant on exports to the US and EU, these challenges could strain finances in the near term.

Italy struggles to revive lagging fibre rollout plan
By Elvira Pollina MILAN: A push by Italy's government for state-backed telecoms firms Open Fiber and FiberCop to accelerate work on a European Union-funded network plan has hit a snag as the companies are struggling to agree terms of a potential deal, three sources said. FiberCop and its smaller rival Open Fiber were entrusted with cabling more than 3 million buildings across Italy by the end of June 2026 under a 3.4 billion euro ($3.9 billion)programme aimed at rolling out ultra-fast broadband networks. Only around half of the targeted 3.4 million buildings have been upgraded, latest government data showed, with Open Fiber, which was awarded 2.2 million buildings, lagging behind FiberCop in its work. Italy has said it was considering handing KKR-backed FiberCop some of the work assigned to rival Open Fiber to speed up the rollout as it tries to meet the deadline agreed as part of a COVID-19 recovery plan. FiberCop had said it was ready to take over in full the work assigned to its rival. But government-sponsored talks between the two companies proved difficult, with FiberCop offering to take over the work at cost price by the end of this month, the sources say. Open Fiber is pushing back on such terms, arguing it would be hard to complete a potential spin-off of its areas swiftly and agreeing a fair valuation for them would take some months, the people said. Open Fiber's board of directors will discuss the situation at a board meeting on Tuesday but the chances of an agreement to hand FiberCop some of the areas are seen as low at this stage, the people said. Open Fiber and FiberCop declined to comment. Italy lags European peers in high-speed fixed-line internet coverage, with some 60% of households having access to ultrafast broadband against an EU average of 79%, according to EU data. A senior official from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's office said it is up to the companies to take the steps needed for an agreement and that time is running short. Open Fiber is 60% owned by state lender CDP with the remainder in the hands of Australian fund Macquarie. FiberCop was spun off last year from former state telco Telecom Italia (TIM) and sold to a KKR-led consortium, including Italy's economy ministry, under a deal worth up to 22 billion euros. Italy's conservative government is also keen to combine Open Fiber assets with those of FiberCop to create a wholesale-only telecommunications network provider under state control.

Tesla leases warehousing facility in Mumbai's Kurla West for five years
Elon Musk's Tesla Inc has leased a 24,565 square-foot (sqft) warehousing facility in Mumbai's Kurla West for a five-year term, according to lease documents sourced from real estate data analytics firm CRE Matrix. The American electric carmaker will use the ground-floor space in Building 1 of Lodha Logistics Park as a service centre and garage, excluding bodywork and spray painting operations, the agreement states. This development comes to light a day after Union Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy said Tesla was yet to show interest in manufacturing EVs in India. While the company is preparing for a market debut, local production does not figure into its immediate plans. Tesla will initially pay a monthly rent of ₹37.53 lakh (₹153 per sqft), with a 5 per cent annual escalation clause built into the lease. The licensor entity is Bellissimo (in City FC Mumbai 1), which operates in real estate services on a fee or contract basis. Tesla has deposited ₹2.25 crore as security. The lease officially commenced on April 20, 2025, with a rent-free period of one month and 10 days. Rent payments begin June 1, 2025. The lease was registered on May 16, 2025. Under the agreement, Tesla will also pay common area maintenance charges of ₹10 per sqft, with a 5 per cent annual escalation, and will receive 20 parking spots with the facility. 'Tesla's India entry is taking shape through a deliberate, multi-city rollout, from its office in Pune to flagship showrooms in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Delhi-NCR, co-working presence in BKC, and now a strategic warehousing facility in Kurla West,' said Abhishek Kiran Gupta, CEO of CRE Matrix. 'This 24,565 sqft lease at ₹153 per sqft is more than a real estate transaction — it's a signal of intent.' In March, Tesla leased showroom space in BKC for a monthly rent of ₹35.26 lakh -- or ₹888 per sqft -- for five years. The company is reportedly leasing a second showroom in Delhi NCR's Aerocity. Tesla's registered Indian office is located at Tablespace, Panchshil Business Park in Pune, and it has also leased co-working space near BKC in Mumbai. In May, Business Standard reported that Tesla is scouting land in Satara, hometown of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, for a completely knocked down (CKD) electric vehicle assembly unit, according to a senior government official. Tesla's official entry into the Indian market is expected in the final quarter of the current financial year. The Maharashtra government previously offered Tesla industrial land in Chakan and Chikhali near Pune, both key automotive hubs. Chakan hosts several major automakers including Mercedes-Benz, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Volkswagen, and Bajaj Auto.
