Top Maoist Leaders Likely To Surrender In Telangana Today

NDTV15-07-2025
Two prominent Maoist leaders, Atram Lachanna and Atram Aruna, are expected to surrender before the Ramagundam police on Tuesday. This high-profile defection to the mainstream underscores the growing pressure on Maoist cadres and the effectiveness of Telangana-led government's rehabilitation initiatives.
Atram Lachanna, a long-standing and influential member of the Telangana State Committee of the banned CPI (Maoist) party, was underground for an astounding three decades. Hailing from Adilabad, Lachanna's surrender is scheduled for 4pm today before the Ramagundam Commissioner of Police, Sri Ambar Kishor Jha, IPS.
Accompanying Lachanna in this crucial surrender will be Atram Aruna, who served as a Divisional Committee Secretary in Bastar, a notorious Maoist stronghold. The surrender of these two individuals, particularly Lachanna with his deep-rooted history and senior position within the movement, will be widely viewed as a major blow to the Maoist infrastructure and a positive step towards restoring peace and stability in previously-affected areas.
This anticipated surrender aligns with a consistent trend observed in Telangana over recent months. The state has witnessed a steady stream of Maoist cadres laying down arms, with hundreds reportedly embracing mainstream society. This ongoing trend is largely attributed to the robust rehabilitation benefits offered by the Telangana government and police under initiatives like "Operation Cheyutha". These programs aim to entice Maoists to abandon violence and reintegrate into society, offering a pathway to a better future.
Meanwhile, the Maoists themselves have recently released a stark statement acknowledging significant losses within their ranks.
According to a press note issued by their central committee, 357 Naxalites have been killed in the past year, with 136 of these casualties being women. The statement further detailed that among those killed were four Central Committee (CC) members and 15 State Committee Naxalites, indicating a severe impact on their leadership structure.
The central committee's press note highlights Dandakaranya as the region where the Naxal organization suffered its biggest loss, with 281 fatalities reported in this area alone.
In an apparent effort to counter the narrative of dwindling strength and to honour their fallen comrades, the Maoists have also released a 24-page booklet in both Gondi language and English. They have announced that they will observe "Martyrdom Week" from July 28 to August 3, a period dedicated to commemorating those who have died in their armed struggle.
The combined effect of sustained counter-insurgency efforts, attractive rehabilitation packages, and internal attrition within the Maoist ranks appears to be significantly impacting the Maoist movement, with today's expected surrender marking another notable step in this direction.

In a first, Delhi govt mulls renaming schools after local war heroes

As Delhi marked Kargil Vijay Diwas on Saturday with tributes to martyrs, Education Minister Ashish Sood announced that the government is considering renaming government schools after local martyrs to 'inspire students and citizens' and instil 'patriotism'. 'This will help inspire students and citizens alike, and instil a sense of duty and patriotism among the younger generation,' the minister's office said in a statement on Saturday. The proposal is under consideration and will involve identifying suitable 'prominent government schools' across Delhi. Currently, Delhi government schools are largely named through centrally or state-run schemes, often in honour of national figures rather than individual local heroes. For instance, schools under the Centre's flagship scheme carry the prefix 'PM SHRI'. In the 2025–26 state budget, the Delhi government announced the rollout of 'CM SHRI Schools' as part of its own model school initiative. In April 2022, the then AAP-led government renamed all Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalayas (RPVVs) as Dr B R Ambedkar Schools of Specialized Excellence. This year, the Education Department also announced plans to set up at least 100 language labs named after Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. So far, the renaming of educational institutions has mostly taken place in central universities. In 2016, Jawaharlal Nehru University renamed its central library after Dr B R Ambedkar following a student-backed proposal. While some seminar halls and centres have been renamed in other universities, similar initiatives have not been seen in Delhi government schools until now. Saturday's announcement was made during a commemorative event at Shivaji College, University of Delhi, where Sood served as the chief guest. He paid tributes to three alumni of the college, including Captain Sumit Roy, Captain Hanif-ud-Din and Captain Anuj Nayyar, who were killed in the 1999 Kargil War. 'The lives of these young warriors are a timeless source of inspiration. Their supreme sacrifice in the prime of youth was extraordinary. I genuinely believe that there is something exceptional in those who willingly lay down their lives for the nation,' Sood said. The education minister also spoke of civic responsibility as a form of service. 'Serving the nation also means fulfilling our civic duties, keeping our surroundings clean, following traffic rules, protecting public property, and living as responsible citizens. These are also acts of patriotism, equally vital for the progress of the country,' he said. The event was attended by Swapna Roy, the mother of Captain Sumit Roy. The ceremony was organised by the college's National Cadet Corps and National Service Scheme units and saw participation by faculty members, college officials, and students.

Congress Leader Says Rahul Gandhi Could Be "2nd Ambedkar", BJP Mocks Party

New Delhi: Mocking the Congress for its leader's remark that party MP and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi could prove to be the "second Ambedkar" for OBCs, the BJP has termed it an insult of Dalits as well as the social reformer, who is also called the Father of the Constitution. In a post on X on Saturday, Congress leader Udit Raj wrote, "OBCs (Other Backward Classes) will have to think that history does not give opportunities for progress again and again. They should follow and support what Rahul Gandhi said at the Talkatora Stadium conference. If they do so, then Rahul Gandhi will prove to be the second Ambedkar for them." On Friday, Mr Gandhi had said that not conducting a caste census when the Congress-led UPA was in power had been a mistake and that he was determined to correct it. "I think about my work, where I did well and where I fell short, and I see two to three things. Land Acquisition Bill, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, Right to Food, Tribal Bill, and Niyamgiri struggle -- all these things I did well. As far as the issues of tribals, Dalits, and women are concerned, I should get good marks there. I did good work," he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. "But one shortcoming remained in the Congress party and my work: I didn't protect the OBC community the way I should have. The reason is that I did not deeply understand the OBC issues at that time. Ten to 15 years ago, I understood the difficulties faced by Dalits. Their issues are visible, they are easily understood, but the problems of OBCs remain hidden. If I had known about your issues and problems at that time, I would have conducted a caste-based census right then. That was my mistake, which I am going to correct," the MP from Raebareli admitted. Reacting to Udit Raj's statement, BJP Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said the Congress was talking about a second BR Ambedkar when it never respected the "original" one. "Insulting Dalits and BR Ambedkar has become the Congress' identity... Who insulted the "original" Ambedkar? Who did not bestow the Bharat Ratna on him? Who did not let his Constitution be implemented in Jammu and Kashmir? Who spoke about Muslim reservation? Who said reservation is bad... Jawaharlal Nehru," Mr Poonawalla said. "Now they want to become a second Ambedkar, not Nehru or Indira Gandhi? This means the Gandhi family is admitting Nehru and Indira Gandhi were on the wrong path... The Congress believes only in worshipping one family," he added.
