‘Kannappa' is not just a film, it's a spiritual experience

With just days to go for the grand release of Kannappa, actor Shiva Balaji, who plays Kumaradeva Sastry in the epic, opened up in an exclusive interview about his experience working on the mythological actioner. Here's what he had to share:
Let's start at the beginning. How did you come onboard Kannappa?
It was quite casual. During a lunch with Mohan Babu garu and Vishnu, the topic of casting came up. Mohan Babu garu directly asked Vishnu, 'Why doesn't Shiva have a role?' Initially, there wasn't one, but the next day, he offered me the role of his son—Kumaradeva Sastry. That's how it began.
How did you prepare for the role?
I mirrored Mohan Babu garu's character—stern, emotionally distant. I didn't rely on external references but focused on portraying a son shaped by that intensity.
Is your role significant in the film?
It's a strong supporting role. My character belongs to a lineage guarding the sacred Vayu Lingam. There are power struggles between Thinnadu, the Boya community, and our family. Even as the son, I wasn't allowed access to the Lingam.
What did you think after watching the film?
Kannappa is extraordinary. The second half is emotionally powerful and visually stunning.
Prabhas' presence has created a buzz. How pivotal is his role?
He appears for around 40 minutes. From his entry, he dominates the narrative. His character is impactful and well-executed.
Any insight on Akshay Kumar's portrayal of Lord Shiva?
Akshay Kumar looks divine. There were debates about who would play Shiva, and while Prabhas was initially considered, Akshay ended up fitting the part perfectly.
You've been selective lately. Why?
I've become choosy. If a role doesn't excite me, I pass. I want performance-driven characters now.
You've dabbled in OTT too. Any plans to return?
Yes, I plan to return with Recce 2. I'm open to strong, meaningful content.
What's next?
A thriller under Mohan Babu garu's production, directed by a Tamil filmmaker. Details will be announced soon.
And working with Mohan Babu off-screen?
He's warm and treats us like family. We grew close, especially during the MAA elections.
Final thoughts on Kannappa?
It's more than just cinema—it's a spiritual journey packed with powerful moments. I'm glad I didn't miss being a part of this film.

How Kannappa Actor Vishnu Manchu's Twelve Jyotirlinga Temples Darshan Came To A "Divine Close"

Chennai: Actor Vishnu Manchu, who plays the lead in director Mukesh Kumar Singh's upcoming magnum opus, Kannappa, has now announced that the journey he had undertaken to visit all the 12 holy Jyothirlingas, situated across the country, had come to a divine close with his darshan at the Sri Sailam Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple. Taking to his social media timelines to make the announcement, he wrote, "Twelve Jyotirlingas. One journey. Eternal peace. Just completed the sacred darshan at Sri Sailam Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple — one of the twelve revered Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. With this visit, my journey to all twelve Jyotirlinga temples comes to a divine close." The actor further said, "My heart is full. My soul feels blessed. Life right now is filled with nothing but positivity, gratitude, and peace. As I stand at the edge of this spiritual milestone, I now look forward to the next chapter #Kannappa, releasing worldwide on June 27. A film close to my heart. A story that reflects the very spirit I carry today. Har Har Mahadev! #Kannappa27thJune." Vishnu Manchu, while announcing this journey on social media, had said, 'I have to truthfully admit one thing. Before starting work on 'Kannappa', I was not such a big devotee of Lord Shiva. I was a devotee of Lord Hanuman and I would recite the Hanuman Chalisa every day even to this day. 'When I wrote Kannappa, I researched a lot and that brought about a lot of changes in me. I found out about what Jyothrilingas were and why one must visit them. I decided that I must visit all these 12 holy places where these Jyothirlingas are situated,' the actor had explained. 'A lot of people do not know what these Jyothirlingas are. I too did not know their significance until a while back. So, for people like me who do not know about the Jyothirlingas, I have decided to do a series of videos on Jyothirlingas.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Vishnu Manchu (@vishnumanchu) The actor then went on to explain the different beliefs in different yugas. 'We are in Kaliyug now. In Sathyayuga, the belief was that one could get closer to God if one did penance. The belief then was that meditation would help you realise the purpose of your life. Now, in Kaliyug, the belief is that if you visit holy places, you will not only come closer to God but will also know the purpose behind your birth.' 'These 12 Jyothirlingas are powerful places. These places are testimony to the fact that Lord Shiva walked among common people. From Kedarnath to Rameshwaram, there are 12 Jyothirlingas all across the country. There is a story behind each story. I wish to visit each one of the Jyothirlingas. The belief is that one will be able to realise one's life purpose near one of the 12 Jyothirlingas. Today, my purpose of life is to be an actor till the day I die. But what is the higher purpose of my life? This journey to the 12 Jyothirlingas is a journey of self-realisation for me. I have already visited three Jyothirlingas -- Kedarnath, Omkareshwar and Ujjain. I will tell about these three temples in my next video. I will also narrate the story of all the Jyothirlingas before I visit them,' he had said then.

Kannappa: Will Prabhas, Akshay Kumar's star power be enough to elevate the Telugu drama in Hindi? Trade talk

Kannappa, one of the biggest and most eagerly awaited films of the year, is set to hit the screens on June 27. The Telugu drama will be released in multiple languages, including Hindi. The makers of the biggie are banking on Prabhas and Akshay Kumar, who have cameos in it, to woo the audience in the Hindi market. However, their presence may not be enough to help the film open well in this region. Akshay Kumar and Prabhas' star power alone won't help Kannappa, says trade analyst Prabhas and Akshay Kumar have cameos in Vishnu Manchu's Kannappa, which is releasing on June 27. The 'Khiladi' plays Lord Shiva in the action drama while the Kalki 2898 AD star essays the role of Rudhra. Their association with Kannappa, however, may not be enough to help it take a good start in Hindi. According to Rohit Jaiswal, a trade analyst and critic, movies no longer work because of a few starry cameos. 'There is no buzz as the trailer was dull. The Hindi opening will be around Rs 80 lakh. They have cameos. This is not the age where you go for a movie only for a cameo. However, if the word-of-mouth is extraordinary, then their presence could benefit the film to some extent,' he told Indiatimes. Interestingly, Singham Again too featured cameos from the likes of Akshay and Ranveer Singh. It, however, did not benefit the action drama as much as expected. According to Sacnilk, a trade website, it earned Rs 247 crore (nett) in India in its full run. This was an average figure given the hype and the Rs 350 crore budget. Coming back to Kannappa, it faces competition from Kajol's MAA. The horror drama too is releasing on the same date. Kannappa may also face some competition from Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par, which will be in its second week. About Kannappa Kannappa is an action drama directed by Mukesh Kumar Singh. It features Vishnu Manchu in the role of a hunter who attains enlightenment and then becomes a devotee of Lord Shiva. The cast includes Prabhas, Akshay Kumar, Mohan Babu, and Mohanlal. Did Mohanlal and actor Baiju Santhosh get into an argument at AMMA meeting? Actress Sarayu Mohan reacts

Mohanlal and actor Baiju Santhosh have been making the headlines after an alleged argument took place between them. Now, in a troll page's post, actress Sarayu Mohan and a member of AMMA, has dropped a sarcastic comment. What happened between Mohanlal and Baiju? As per ongoing speculations, including a report by Mathrubhumi, the two actors came together for a meeting at the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). During the conversation, Baiju apparently reacted against Mohanlal's decision to never return as the organization's president. However, the actor's words were laced with sarcasm and said, 'What's the big deal about becoming president, you don't have to move a muscle.' (Translated from Malayalam). This led Mohanlal to react sharply, and he said, 'If you're here to speak, do that and go. I will decide whether I resign or not.' Actress Sarayu Mohan reacts to speculations While this alleged interaction is doing the rounds on the internet, actress Saryu Mohan commented on a Facebook post. The meme focused on the supposed interaction, to which the actress ridiculed it and said, 'Then…Then, what happened?' For those unaware, Mohanlal was serving as the president of AMMA in 2024. Owing to the misconduct allegations that emerged against the members of the organization, the superstar stepped down as the president, dissolving the elected committee. Now, as the organization is planning to reform with new members, it appears that Mohanlal might not return as the president. Coming to his work front, the actor was last seen in a lead role in the movie Thudarum. The crime thriller directed by Tharun Moorthy featured the tale of a former film stuntman who leads a quiet life with his wife and two kids in a town in Kerala. However, when his beloved car is dragged into a criminal investigation, the film takes a turn, revealing a dark truth behind it. How the man faces it and the rageful revenge he takes against the wrongdoers form the rest of the story. Moving ahead, the superstar will soon be hitting the big screens with his cameo appearance in Vishnu Manchu starrer Kannappa. The fantasy film features Mohanlal as a tribal warrior with Prabhas, Akshay Kumar, and Kajal Aggarwal also in cameo roles.
