BIMB Securities remains 'neutral' on EV adoption outlook

The Star10-07-2025
PETALING JAYA: The future of the electric vehicles (EV) market in the country looks promising as structural incentives and increasing ESG awareness provide a supportive backdrop for long-term electrification.
But underinvestment in distribution infrastructure presents a structural bottleneck, said BIMB Securities Research. The absence of proactive upgrades in substations and feeder lines, particularly in high-density urban and legacy residential areas, continue to constrain home-charging scalability.
Until grid resilience improves materially, EV uptake may remain biased towards landed homes or public charging networks, delaying broader adoption.
In this context, BIMB said, it sees selective upside for contractors exposed to grid enhancement projects and power distribution assets, while turning cautious on EV original equipment manufacturers and charging infrastructure players with concentrated exposure to the residential segment.
It retains its 'neutral' stance on both the automotive sector and Malaysia's EV adoption outlook.
Within its coverage, it maintains 'hold' calls for Sime Darby Bhd and MBM Resources Bhd , while reiterating its 'sell' call on Bermaz Auto Bhd .
Its target price for the three stocks are RM1.76, RM4.30 and 65 sen a share respectively.
Despite offering EV models across the board, it continues to favour Sime Darby for its balanced exposure, anchored by strong EV traction from BYD and BMW, and resilient Internal Combustion Engine volumes via Perodua.
This diversified product mix enables Sime Darby to ride both ends of the adoption curve, supporting earnings stability as the market transitions.
In contrast, Bermaz Auto's narrower model range and higher premium bias limit its relative defensiveness in a more price-sensitive and infrastructure-constrained EV landscape.
To ensure that EV adoption can scale sustainably, Malaysia must undertake several key actions, said BIMB.
First, a comprehensive mapping and stress-testing exercise should be conducted to identify weak substations and prioritise them for upgrades.
Secondly, it suggested, public-private funding mechanisms should be mobilised, particularly involving government-linked companies and institutional investors, to finance grid modernisation efforts.
Thirdly, the development of a domestic battery recycling industry should be incentivised to manage end-of-life battery waste and enable second-life usage. Finally, the adoption of smart load management technologies should be encouraged, particularly for home and commercial EV chargers.
These systems can balance power draw across time and location, reducing peak stress on the grid.
It adds that Malaysia's current electricity generation capacity stands at 27,288MW, and is projected to rise to 40,000MW by 2029. However, generation is not the primary bottleneck, the real pressure point lies in the distribution segment.
Substations and feeder lines, particularly in mature urban areas, are not equipped to support EV charging loads ranging from 11–20kW per household. The issue becomes more acute when multiple households charge their vehicles concurrently, resulting in localised demand spikes that risk overloading transformers and causing power disruptions.

In a tight spot? Meet the robot-like compact alternative to van-based EV chargers

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Allianz Malaysia is one of the very few insurance companies in Malaysia that offers a dedicated protection plan for electric vehicles (EV). Called EV Shield, the plan was launched early last year and is being provided at no extra cost to EV owners who insured their vehicle with Allianz. One of the main benefits of EV Shield is the ability to have a mobile DC charger to recharge your vehicle in case it runs out of battery during your journey. The mobile DC charger is usually housed inside a van, but Allianz has recently added a different 'type' of mobile DC charger to its EV Rangers fleet. Meet the Allianz EV RoboRanger It comes in the form of the EV RoboRanger, which is the name that Allianz gives to its new compact mobile DC charger on wheels. While the Allianz EV RoboRanger has already been in service since June, the recent BYD Atto 2's launch event was the first time that we saw it in action. Despite the 'Robo' moniker in its name, this is not a true robotic EV charger, though, as it has neither self-driving capability nor robotic charging arms. So, don't expect it to be able to perform autonomous charging as per the likes of Zeekr and StarCharge robotic EV chargers that we encountered in China recently. The actual remote control for Allianz EV RoboRanger. — SoyaCincau pic Instead, the operator handles the movement of the mobile DC charger via a remote control. That being said, the charger is equipped with safety sensors that allows it to automatically stop if the charger detects there is a person or an obstacle blocking its way. According to Allianz Malaysia's representative, the EV RoboRanger that the company showcased during Atto 2's launch weekend has a built-in 90kWh battery and can deliver a DC charging speed of up to 80kW. However, the representative did not reveal the charger's manufacturer as well as its cost to us. What scenarios require the deployment of EV RoboRanger? We were told that while the van-based mobile DC charger that Allianz put into service last year is adequate for most cases, certain locations might be too narrow for the van. After all, the operator needs to park the van next to the customer's vehicle when the mobile DC charging is in operation, and it might block the path of other vehicles within the area. As a comparison, the EV RoboRanger has a much smaller footprint than a typical Allianz EV Ranger van. Allianz EV RoboRanger on duty at BYD Atto 2 launch last week. Its appearance during the BYD Atto 2 launch event throughout last weekend also showed other potential usage of the EV RoboRanger beyond just a rescue tool. During our time there, we noticed the test drive units were being charged by the RoboRanger as well as another van-based mobile DC charger. We have no knowledge of the exact arrangement between Allianz and Sime Motors for the event, but from what we can see, it has probably helped the latter save some time since the event crew don't have to drive out to recharge the test drive units. All they need to do is have the Allianz EV Ranger crew members to 'drive' the RoboRanger to the units that need to be recharged and initiate charging. As noted earlier, Allianz provided EV Shield to its customers at no extra cost. Aside from having access to on-site charging for stranded vehicles in Klang Valley, Penang, Kuantan, and Johor Bahru, there's also the 24-hour towing service, which would bring their EVs to the nearest charging station or home, if required. Allianz EV Shield also covers the usage of EV chargers. If you somehow got injured or your EV is damaged while using a public EV charger, the EV Shield provides up to RM5,000 of compassionate cover. The EV Shield also has a personal liability coverage of up to RM50,000 if there is death or bodily injury to a third party from using the home wall charger to charge your EV in your residence. It also covers damages to third-party property. Meanwhile, customers can also claim up to RM15,000 to repair or replace the home EV charger if it gets damaged by fire, lightning, natural disasters or even gets stolen outright. Not only that, you can claim up to RM2,000 if your EV charging cable is lost or damaged during a fire, theft, accidental collision, or overturning. — SoyaCincau

Global ESG sukuk poised to top US$60bil by 2026

KUALA LUMPUR: Global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) sukuk is likely to surpass US$60 billion in outstanding value by the end of 2026, according to Fitch Ratings. The rating agency said the growth reflects its expanding role in funding sustainability initiatives, attracting a diverse investor base, and benefiting from ongoing regulatory reforms. It noted that just over 40 per cent of all emerging-market ESG US dollar debt issued in the first half of 2025 (1H25), excluding China, was in sukuk format, with the rest in bonds. However, Fitch Ratings expects ESG sukuk issuance to moderate in the third quarter of 2025 (3Q25) due to seasonal summer trends in key markets, mirroring broader sukuk market patterns, before rebounding in 4Q25. Its global head of Islamic Finance, Bashar Al Natoor, said Fitch-rated ESG sukuk has been resilient to the Middle East geopolitical conflict. "All issuers have Stable Outlooks, and almost all are investment-grade. There were no defaults. "ESG sukuk are now increasingly tapped by both Islamic and ESG-focused investors, supporting funding diversification and helping issuers meet their sustainability targets," he added. According to Fitch Ratings, over 10 per cent of global dollar sukuk outstanding are ESG-linked. Global ESG sukuk increased by just over 12 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in 1H25 to about US$50 billion equivalent outstanding. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) accounted for over half of this, led by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, while Malaysia and Indonesia together represented 40 per cent. Fitch Ratings covers about three-quarters of the global US dollar ESG sukuk market, the vast majority of which is senior unsecured, with around one per cent being subordinated. Key listing venues for dollar-denominated ESG sukuk include the stock exchanges in Frankfurt, London, Stuttgart, and Nasdaq Dubai. Issuer diversity increased notably in the second quarter of 2025, with examples such as UAE-based Omniyat Holdings Ltd's debut green sukuk, rated 'BB-', and Pakistan's first rupee-denominated sovereign green sukuk, which was unrated. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's Capital Market Authority introduced new guidelines for green, social, sustainability, and sustainability-linked debt instruments. However, it said geopolitical risks, evolving Shariah interpretations, oil price volatility, and greenwashing concerns may weigh on future ESG sukuk issuance.
