India's largest port in the making to raise Rs 30,000 crore debt

Time of Indiaa day ago

The firm building what will become the largest port in India plans to raise as much as 300 billion rupees ($3.5 billion) of debt, giving lenders an opportunity to invest in one of the cornerstones of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's infrastructure overhaul.
Owners of the
Vadhvan Port Project
Ltd., located a few hours north of Mumbai, are looking to raise debt with tenors in the range of 15 to 20 years. They're considering onshore and offshore markets to raise the funds, according to a top official.
'We have started the process of raising debt which will happen in two phases,' said Unmesh Sharad Wagh, chairman at
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority
, or JNPA, which holds a 74% stake. The Maharashtra Maritime Board owns the remaining 26%.

The $9 billion port project is a major undertaking for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who laid the port's foundation stone last year. Upon completion, which is expected toward the end of the decade, Vadhvan will have the capacity to handle some 23 million container units, making it one of the 10 largest ports in the world, according to its backers.
IDBI Capital
was appointed as advisor to help lineup long term lenders for the first round of funding, with a target of at least 220 billion rupees, Wagh said. The funds will be disbursed over the next five years, and the request for proposals from lenders will be floated during the October to December quarter.
Live Events
JNPA and MMB will jointly infuse about 130 billion rupees worth of equity into the project, said Wagh, who is also chairman and managing director of
Vadhvan Port
Project. The firm is in talks with multilateral agencies, and is working on reclaiming 1,200 hectares of land, he added.
Bolstering the country's
maritime infrastructure
is a priority for Modi's administration. Through the country's annual budget in February, the government proposed a Maritime Development Fund to support the sector through financial assistance via equity or debt securities.
Some of the largest container ships have been forced to skip India because none of its existing ports are deep enough to receive them.
Vadhvan's natural depth
of 20 meters would allow some of the largest ships to dock. It would also serve as a starting point for the so-called
India-Middle East-Europe Corridor
, a planned economic link aimed at developing new trade routes between the regions.

'Welcome to India': Redditor's post on Gurgaon vs Toronto real estate prices starts a 'NRIs or blackmoney' debate

A Reddit post comparing real estate prices in Gurgaon and Toronto has gone viral, stirring a debate on income disparity and property affordability. Posted by Mohit Yadavv, the viral post highlighted the shocking contrast: a 3 BHK in Gurgaon costs around ₹2.95 crore, while a similar property in Toronto is priced at ₹4.4 crore. Yet, India's per capita income is just $3,000 compared to Canada's $54,000 — an 18x difference. In contrast, real estate prices differ by only 1.5x. 'Those buying in Gurgaon either have one in Toronto too, or they're simply stretching themselves without reason,' one Redditor remarked. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 7 Things Changing for Seniors on Social Security in 2025 HealthyWallet Learn More Undo Another comment pointed fingers elsewhere: 'It's not just NRIs distorting the market. They're too few to create this kind of disparity. It's the black money in the system inflating these prices.' However, one person said the comparison is wrong. "Scarborough is not Toronto, it's part of GTA(Greater Toronto Area) and is historically a crime ridden bad neighbourhood. Actual Condo prices in actual Toronto suburbs or downtown would be upwards of 1 million easy. Go towards Mississauga and Brampton and you will find the same," he pointed out. Skyrocketing Gurgaon Property Prices According to a report by ANAROCK titled 'NCR Real Estate—A Beacon of Growth and Opportunity' , NRIs accounted for 15–25% of investments in newly launched residential projects across India's top seven cities — Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata — in 2024. The report further revealed that average property prices in New Gurgaon rose to ₹10,350 per sq. ft in 2024 — a 76% surge since 2019 and a 34% jump since last year. Overall, Gurgaon witnessed an 84% price hike, from ₹6,150 per sq. ft in early 2020 to ₹11,300 by March 2025. Residential prices along the Dwarka Expressway more than doubled in five years — from ₹5,360 per sq. ft in 2019 to ₹11,000 in 2025 — due to improved connectivity with Delhi and key Gurgaon locations like Golf Course Road and Old Gurgaon. Sohna Road, another hotspot in southern Gurgaon, recorded average prices of around ₹6,000 per sq. ft in 2024. The area is emerging as a go-to destination for affordable housing seekers, the report noted.

"Human Mind Will Always Be Superior To Any Kind Of AI": Piyush Goyal

London: Union Minister Piyush Goyal said that most Indians are convinced that the human mind will always be supreme and superior to any kind of artificial intelligence (AI) and assuaged concerns of job losses due to the emerging technology. He made these remarks during his interaction at the 'Future Frontier Forum' held in London on Thursday. "Artificial intelligence is an area that India is absolutely going to adopt. It's going to bring it to our working. We do not see this as an area of concern that will lead to job losses," the minister said at the event. He added, "Given our talent in the country, I think we should open up many, many more avenues to help the world in terms of data, in terms of decoding new possibilities with AI. So we are only looking at it as a need to retrain our people, to re-skill our talent, but adopt it." "So at the end of the day, most Indians are convinced the human mind will always be supreme. To get the best of AI, the human mind has created it and will be able to tame it and ultimately will be superior to any kind of AI. That I am absolutely sure," he said. Piyush Goyal is on a two-day official visit to the United Kingdom from Wednesday. The visit is aimed at holding key meetings related to the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This high-level visit highlights India's growing efforts to strengthen its trade and investment partnership with the UK. It comes shortly after the India-UK FTA was announced by the Prime Ministers of both countries last month. On Thursday, the minister also held a productive meeting with Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer, UK. In a social media post, the minister said, "Discussed avenues for collaboration in financial frameworks, sustainable finance, and unlocking new trade opportunities to further strengthen the India-UK economic partnership." He also had an engaging discussion with Oliver Prill, CEO of Tide, a business financial platform based in the UK. "With India's massive strides in the digital world, we discussed the fintech ecosystem, digital empowerment, and fostering SME-led growth across both economies," Mr Goyal shared.
