'Why do such dangerous things': Video from MRT track circulates online, SMRT lodges police report, Singapore News
Public transport operator SMRT has lodged a police report after a video showing an individual filming on the train tracks was widely circulated on social media.
The video was taken in dimly lit conditions, and minimal footsteps can be heard as a train was passing by.
It is not sure when the video was recorded, but it has been making the rounds across multiple social media platforms, drawing increasing public attention.
It garnered 28.2k views on TikTok as at Thursday (June 12) afternoon, while a version posted on the Facebook page Complaint Singapore has received 9.4k views.
The Instagram account Singapura Legends has recorded the highest traction, with 28.6k views.
The footage has sparked widespread concern among netizens, many of whom expressed shock over the individual's actions.
One user questioned, 'How on earth (did) he access that in the first place?' while another asked, 'Why did he do such dangerous things?'
Another netizen described the incident as a 'life-endangering action'.
In response to AsiaOne's queries on Thursday, the president of SMRT Trains, Lam Sheau Kai, said that SMRT is aware of a video circulating on social media showing footage taken from the MRT track.
The video was filmed between Simei and Tanah Merah stations, where nearby construction work is ongoing for new viaducts connecting to the future East Coast Integrated Depot (ECID).
Lam also noted "we take a serious view of this incident, as track trespassing poses severe safety risks".
SMRT added that such reckless actions not only endanger the individual but can also cause service disruptions, affecting many commuters.
When emergency brakes are applied, there is also a risk of causing injury to commuters onboard the train.
Under the Rapid Transit Systems Regulations, any unauthorised entry into MRT tunnels or tracks is considered a serious offence. Offenders found guilty of trespassing may face a fine of up to $500.
Police investigations are ongoing.

Humanitarian workers killed in Gaza bus ambush, food distribution continues
JERUSALEM/CAIRO - At least eight Palestinians who worked for the U.S-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation died in an ambush, the GHF said on Thursday, blaming Hamas militants for the killings that rocked the troubled food distribution operation. A bus carrying about two dozen GHF workers was raked with gunfire on Wednesday night as it headed to an aid centre in southern Gaza, the foundation said, adding that many of its staff were injured and some might have been kidnapped. Separately, the local health authority said 103 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire and 400 wounded in the past 24 hours across the battered enclave -- including 21 people killed this morning near GHF sites. GHF's interim director John Acree said his organisation had considered closing its centres on Thursday following the bus attack, but opted to remain open. "We decided that the best response to Hamas' cowardly murderers was to keep delivering food for the people of Gaza who are counting on us," he said in a statement. Hamas declined to comment on the shootings. Social media channels in Gaza said Hamas had targeted the bus because it was allegedly carrying GHF workers tied to Yasser Abu Shabab, the leader of a large clan that has challenged Hamas's supremacy in the enclave and is being armed by Israel. Abu Shabab released a statement on his Facebook page denouncing images posted on social media showing Gazans allegedly killed by Hamas and as it seeks to maintain power. ‘Please teach Singaporeans how to drive a car on the highway' video goes viral

In the middle of substantial traffic, the impatient driver of the Singapore-registered Mazda uses the shoulder—usually reserved for use as an emergency lane— in an attempt to cut the queue and overtake a red car in front of it. However, the driver's attempts at an illicit overtake are thwarted by a white Bezza in front, which blocks the car by also temporarily getting on the shoulder. The Singapore-registered car is then forced to go back to its original place behind the red car. In the comments section on TikTok, many called out not only the driver of the Mazda but Singaporean motorists in general, who don't exactly have the best reputation in that country. 'Because in his country they don't do it, they do it in other countries,' one wrote. 'Even if they get sued, they can still go home calmly because they are not afraid of Malaysian law,' chimed in another. A TikTok user said that they regularly see Singapore-registered cars using the emergency lane. Others underlined that Singaporean motorists need to behave themselves when they drive in Malaysia. Many also praised the driver of the Bezza, saluting them for their quick thinking. 'Bezza legend,' one wrote. Unfortunately, this is not the only incident of a Singaporean motorist behaving badly in Malaysia. Last weekend, a Singaporean man was arrested after a road rage incident wherein he got into an altercation with a Malaysian man. Not only did he allegedly bump and spit at the man, but he was also caught on video kicking the BMW that the Malaysian man was driving. The Malaysian man filed a complaint against the Singaporean national over the incident, which occurred before 3:00 p.m. near Taman Ungku Tun Aminah in Johor Bahru on Saturday (June 8). He was arrested a few hours later, according to Johor Baru (North) district police chief Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh.
