SG creates fake ‘SC of Karnataka' X account to flag misuse, defends blocking orders in HC

BENGALURU: To demonstrate how platform 'X' can be misused, and the necessity to curtail its misuse, Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta on Friday showed the Karnataka High Court a fake account in the name of the 'Supreme Court of Karnataka' which was verified by the platform X.
Making a submission before Justice M Nagaprasanna, while hearing a petition filed by X Corp questioning the series of blocking orders issued by the Union government, Mehta drew the attention of the court by giving an illustration to defend the blocking orders.
Mehta explained that they opened an account in the name of 'Supreme Court of Karnataka' on X, and it is a verified account. 'Now we can post anything on it, and viewers can say that the Supreme Court of Karnataka said it. The creator of the account remains anonymous,' he submitted.
However, senior counsel KG Raghavan, representing X Corp, took serious exception to the demonstration of a fake account and also the contention of the Solicitor General, who in turn contended that the fake account was created only to demonstrate the element of misuse and was not used.
Interfering at this stage, the court said a fake account is only an illustration that creating such accounts on the intermediary is easy, and it will not prejudice the case of X. Later, Raghavan informed the court that the said fake account has been blocked by X.
X Corp moved the Karnataka High Court, seeking to declare that Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000 (IT Act) does not confer powers on the Union government to issue information-blocking orders under the IT Act.
It prayed to the high court to declare that information-blocking orders can only be issued under Section 69A of the IT Act, read with the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking for Access of Information by Public) Rules, 2009 (Blocking Rules).
X Corp also requested the court to restrain the Union government from taking coercive or prejudicial action against them for not joining the censorship portal Sahyog, as the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has attempted delegation of power that it itself does not have, and should be struck down.
Further hearing was adjourned to July 25.

HM Amit Shah confirms killing of Pahalgam attackers in 'Operation Mahadev'

NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on July 29 told Parliament that three Pakistani LeT terrorists behind the April 22 Pahalgam attack were killed in Operation Mahadev near Srinagar. Addressing the Lok Sabha during a special discussion on Operation Sindoor, Shah said the slain terrorists, Suleiman, Afghan, and Jibran, were top LeT operatives responsible for killing 26 tourists in Baisaran Valley. 'All three were eliminated after a two-month-long intelligence operation involving the Army, CRPF, and J&K Police. Their masters were earlier neutralised in Operation Sindoor,' Shah said. He revealed that Operation Mahadev began on May 22 when the Intelligence Bureau intercepted signals from an encrypted communication system used by the terrorists. After weeks of surveillance and coordination among security forces, their location was confirmed on July 22. 'We sent human assets who had seen their faces. They identified their bodies after the encounter,' he said. Shah said an M9 carbine and two AK-47s recovered from the terrorists were the same weapons used in the April 22 killings, confirmed by forensic tests in Chandigarh. 'This is a clear message: India will bring justice to every victim of terrorism,' he asserted. Shah said two Pakistani voter IDs and Pakistani-made chocolate packets were found on the terrorists, and their weapons came from a 'western neighbour.' He added that the NIA questioned 1,055 people over 3,000 hours, all documented.

Ensure release of TN fishermen in Lankan custody, CM urges Centre

Chennai, Jul 29 (PTI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday called upon the Centre to take appropriate diplomatic steps to secure the early release of the state fishermen in the custody of Sri Lankan authorities. In the wake of Sri Lankan navy arresting five fishermen from Ramanathapuram district, besides nine others from the state and impounding their fishing vessels, the Chief Minister expressed 'a deep sense of anguish" over the continuing and unabated apprehension of Indian fishermen by the Island nation. 'The repeated apprehensions have caused significant economic and emotional distress and uncertainty for the affected families. Currently, 235 fishing boats and 68 fishermen are in Sri Lankan custody," Stalin said in a letter addressed to Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. view comments First Published: July 29, 2025, 18:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Governments anti-fraud initiative shows remarkable success, 97% reduction in spoofed calls

New Delhi [India], July 29 (ANI): Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia announced significant achievements in the government's fight against telecom fraud, revealing that the Sanchar Saathi portal has been utilised by 15.5 crore citizens nationwide, marking a major milestone in digital security initiatives. Speaking to the media, Minister Scindia highlighted the dramatic impact of coordinated anti-fraud measures, stating that spoofed calls have been reduced by 97 per cent. "Earlier, we were receiving 1.35 crore spoofed calls per day. Now these calls have been reduced to just 3 lakh daily," the Minister announced. The government's multi-pronged approach has yielded impressive results across various fronts. A total of 1.75 crore phone numbers have been cancelled for exceeding individual limits, while an additional 82 lakh mobile connections were disconnected using the AI-powered ASTR (Artificial Intelligence and Facial Recognition for Telecom SIM Subscriber Verification) system. The ASTR technology has proven effective in identifying connections obtained through fake or forged documents. Authorities have blocked 5.1 lakh mobile handsets and disengaged 24.46 lakh WhatsApp accounts suspected of fraudulent activities. Additionally, 20,000 bulk SMS senders have been blacklisted to prevent mass fraudulent messaging campaigns. The CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) facility has secured over 35 lakh lost or stolen mobile devices. Of these, 21.35 lakh devices have been traced and 5.07 lakh successfully recovered and returned to their owners. The Sanchar Saathi portal has emerged as a crucial tool in the fight against telecom fraud, recording over 16 crore visitor hits with approximately 2 lakh daily users. The platform provides real-time data and enables citizens to report issues through features like "Not My Number" and "Not Required" services. The portal's CEIR facility allows users to report lost or stolen handsets for immediate blocking and tracing across all telecom operator networks. This ensures that stolen devices cannot be misused anywhere in India, with traceability features helping in recovery efforts. DGP Cyber Crime Telangana Sikha Goyal highlighted the state's exceptional performance in mobile phone recovery. "Telangana presently ranks first in recovery of mobile phones in the country. As of date, we have recovered and handed over to victims about 88,301 mobile phones," she stated. The success in Telangana was attributed to systematic training programs where modal officers were identified in each district and trained by state-level nodal officers from the CID. This structured approach has made Telangana a model for other states to follow. The government has taken decisive action against international spoofed calls through the CIOR (International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System), launched in October 2024. Within 24 hours of deployment, the system blocked 1.35 crore spoofed calls, demonstrating immediate effectiveness. To combat evolving fraud tactics, telecom service providers have been instructed to display "International Call" notifications for all calls originating from outside India. This helps citizens make informed decisions about answering such calls. Additionally, 308 international carriers and aggregators repeatedly sending spoofed calls have been blocked. Complaints about international number fraud dropped from 2,776 cases in January 2025 to single-digit numbers by June 2025. The Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) has created a secure network of 620 organizations working as national-level watchdogs. This includes central security agencies, 35 state police forces, telecom service providers, and GSTN, creating a comprehensive security ecosystem. The ASTR system has analyzed 134 crore mobile connections, leading to the disconnection of over 82 lakh fraudulent connections after reverification. The technology detects cases where mobile connections have been acquired using different demographic and KYC details but similar subscriber images, effectively identifying fake document usage.
