How an actress's comment pushed Allu Arjun to build six pack abs. 'I took that up as a challenge'

Vision for Indian Cinema on the Global Stage
Actor Allu Arjun , a key figure in South Indian cinema , spoke at the first World Audio Visual Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 in Mumbai, sharing insights into his fitness journey and his commitment to pushing boundaries in Indian cinema. During the event, Arjun looked back on his career, including his decision to become one of the first South Indian actors to flaunt six-pack abs on screen—something that was uncommon and culturally unaccepted two decades ago.Recalling the origins of that transformation, Arjun shared that it was not just a professional goal but a personal challenge. He said the idea was sparked during a conversation with a female co-star who expressed doubt that South Indian actors could achieve such a physique. "Someone motivated me to do that by saying, I don't think any South actors can come up with six packs. One of the actresses whom I worked with said that. And I took that up as a challenge. Then, I just did it for my people," he said at the summit.Arjun emphasized that back then, such physical transformations were viewed with skepticism in the regional film industry . 'Culturally, it wasn't accepted and there were many taboos around that. I knew that, sometimes, it takes only one person to break the jinx,' he explained. His decision to develop a toned physique for his 2007 film Desamuduru, directed by Puri Jagannadh, marked a turning point in how body image was perceived in South Indian cinema. Before this shift, Arjun was known for his boy-next-door appearances in early films like Gangotri (2003), Arya (2004), Bunny (2005), and Happy (2006). His change in physical appearance began a new era for South Indian actors, encouraging others to take fitness seriously and challenge existing norms.Talking about the importance of staying physically fit as an actor, Arjun underlined that fitness is not optional, especially in Indian cinema where actors are expected to dance, perform action scenes, and adapt to unpredictable schedules. 'It's extremely tough, to be honest. It's extremely tough, but it's worth it when you see the big space and you have millions of people appreciating your effort,' he said. He also noted that his workout routine remains consistent regardless of his shooting schedule.Reflecting on a serious injury during his early career, Arjun disclosed that he once suffered a shoulder rotator cuff tear after his tenth film. He said that though he expected a quick recovery, doctors advised a six-month break, which became a major turning point. The incident shifted his focus from physical prowess to honing his acting skills. 'That was the most fearful moment... what matters is your performance,' he said, indicating a renewed commitment to versatility.Arjun's recent global recognition stems largely from the success of the Pushpa franchise. Pushpa: The Rise (2021) earned him a National Award, and its sequel, Pushpa 2: The Rule (2025), continued the momentum, smashing box office records. The actor acknowledged the impact of these films, stating, 'At least everybody knows my face now. I am a regional actor... but now, because of 'Pushpa' and with the love of Indian audience, now I am a more familiar face.'Looking ahead, Arjun is set to collaborate with director Atlee for a high-budget sci-fi film, currently in pre-production. The project, tentatively titled AA22, will reportedly feature cutting-edge VFX and may involve Hollywood studios. He is also expected to work with filmmaker Trivikram Srinivas, though timelines are yet to be confirmed.During the 'Talent Beyond Borders' session, Arjun expressed optimism about Indian cinema's future internationally. He highlighted the rise of global entertainment industries like Korean and Iranian films and stressed the need for India to focus on local storytelling to connect with global audiences. 'Everybody has had an impact on global cinema... Indian cinema has yet to make a serious dent in the international market,' he said. The WAVES 2025 summit itself, held from May 1 to May 4, aimed to boost India's global presence in the entertainment sector. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the event brought together over 10,000 delegates from more than 90 countries, featuring a range of sessions on broadcasting, infotainment, digital media, and more.

Urdu writers urged to give greater voice to tribal life
Gaya: Participants at a seminar in Gaya on Tuesday agreed that tribal life and culture have been insufficiently represented in Urdu literature, particularly in fiction. They stressed that the genre has largely overlooked the lives, traditions and struggles of tribal communities, especially those in neighbouring Jharkhand, and called for a more authentic and serious portrayal. Chandra Bhan, representing the Delhi-based Sahitya Academy, said tribals were an integral part of the Indian cultural ethos. "Without tribals, the Indian national mosaic would not look the way it should be depicted," he said, adding that whatever little had been written "lacked originality as it was mostly second-hand." He expressed hope that a new generation of Urdu writers would address the gap by depicting the many dimensions of tribal life — from folk tales, music and paintings to qualities such as simplicity, love for nature and contentment despite limited opportunities. Masoom Aziz Kazmi, a critic and historian of Urdu literature, concurred that both Urdu prose and poetry had failed to give due space to tribal themes. "Whatever little has been done in this respect has not been properly appreciated, propagated and documented," he said. Kazmi, a retired IG-rank police officer, cited the novel 'Hasrat-e-Tamir' by the late Akhtar Orainvi, praising its depiction of "different shades of tribal life including its simplicity, honesty, commitment, love for nature" and its portrayal of tribals as aspirational without being consumed by jealousy or greed. Humayun Ashraf, former head of the Urdu department at Vinoba Bhave University, Hazaribag, said writings on tribal issues had not received due acknowledgement. He highlighted works by Sohail Azimabadi, Akhtar Orainvi, Iliyas Ahmad Gaddi, Zakia Mashhadi, Zaki Anwar, Perwez Hayat and Ahmad Saghir, and pointed out that gender parity and women's empowerment were often stronger among tribals than in other communities. The seminar, titled "The reflection of tribal life and culture in Urdu literature, particularly Urdu fiction writing," was jointly organised by the Sahitya Academy — the apex body of Indian literature under the Union Ministry of Culture — and the postgraduate department of Urdu, Gaya College. Abdul Hai, head of the postgraduate department of Urdu, delivered the vote of thanks while Gaya College vice-principal Bibha Singh presided over the inaugural session. ‘Bhaukaal Se Pehle…': Did Divyenndu Hint At An Update On Mirzapur: The Film? Check It Out
Divyenndu hints at exciting news about Mirzapur: The Film, sparking buzz among fans eager for updates on the next big chapter of the hit series. Prime Video's flagship show, Mirzapur, became one of the groundbreaking series in India, and the love for the franchise grew so much that the makers confirmed a standalone film. After three blockbuster seasons, the makers announced Mirzapur: The Film is officially in the works. While it's been a while since there has been any update about the movie, it looks like Divyenndu, aka Munna Bhaiya, has given an update. Starring Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, and Divyenndu in their now-iconic roles of Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu, and Munna, the show becomes the first-ever Indian OTT show to get a film adaptation. As fans waited with bated breath to watch the gripping drama, Divyenndu took to his Instagram and shared a series of pictures sitting in front of a beautiful hut and in the midst of a calming surrounding, but it's the caption that hinted at something big. Divyenndu's Instagram Post While sharing the pictures, Divyenndu wrote, 'BHAUKAAL se pehle ki SHANTI." For those who are unaware, Divyenndu's character of Munna Bhaiya in Mirzapur often used the word 'Bhaukaal" while speaking, which means this could be a hint that the actor is starting the shoot of the film soon. This caption didn't go unnoticed by eagle-eyed netizens who started speculating. One wrote, 'Bhaukaal hone wala hai 💀." 'Munna Bhaiya is back," another one wrote. A third fan shared, 'Jalwa h apka🔥." About Mirzapur: The Film The news of Mirzapur: The Film has come after the show completed three seasons. The Amazon Prime Video series streamed its first season in 2018 and became a rage instantly. The series returned for the second season during the pandemic. The third season was released with much fanfare earlier this year. Speaking about taking the series to the big screen, producers Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar of Excel Entertainment said, 'It is a landmark milestone for us to bring the quintessential Mirzapur experience to our audiences, yet again, but this time on the big screen. Throughout three successful seasons, this acclaimed franchise has struck all the right chords with fans through its powerful storytelling and memorable characters, from the likes of Kaleen Bhaiya, Guddu Bhaiya, and Munna Bhaiya, to name a few. We believe that adapting such a treasured series into a film will undoubtedly make for an even more engrossing watch, allowing audiences to immerse themselves in the world of Mirzapur like never before. We are stoked to collaborate with Prime Video, once again, and look forward to delivering a grand cinematic experience, which will truly live up to the expectations of our dedicated fanbase."
