Hours after arrest, Medha Patkar withdraws HC plea against defamation conviction
The development came just hours after she was arrested by the Delhi Police, following a non-bailable warrant (NBW) issued by the city court for failing to comply with the conditions required for release on probation.
The case stems from a press release issued by the Narmada Bachao Andolan leader on November 24, 2000, in which she alleged that Saxena, who was the president of non-profit organisation National Council of Civil Liberties at the time, had given a cheque to NBA, which subsequently bounced. Saxena, who was actively involved in ensuring the timely completion of the Sardar Sarovar Project, filed the defamation case on January 18, 2001, alleging that Patkar's press release contained false accusations intended to harm his reputation.
On May 24, 2024, metropolitan magistrate Raghav Sharma convicted Patkar concluding that her actions were deliberate, malicious and aimed at tarnishing Saxena's reputation. On July 1, 2024, judge Sharma sentenced Patkar to undergo five months imprisonment along with ₹10 lakh as fine.

On April 2, sessions judge Vishal Singh had upheld metropolitan magistrate Raghav Sharma's May 2024 order convicting Patkar in the defamation case. On April 8, Singh had granted Patkar probation directing her to deposit ₹1 lakh as compensation and furnish a personal bond of ₹25,000 by April 23.
However on Wednesday, judge Singh issued the NWB, upon her failure to fulfil the conditions, noting that Patkar instead of appearing in court for compliance of the order on sentence, was absent and deliberately failed to comply with the same.
A high court bench of justice Shailender Kaur dismissed Patkar's petition as withdrawn, after the social activist's counsel submitted that his client would file the same afresh by also challenging the order on sentence.
'The counsel for the petitioner submits that he seeks to withdraw the criminal revision petition with liberty to file afresh. In view of the submissions made, the petition is dismissed as withdrawn with liberty as prayed as per law,' the order read.

Kamal Haasan lauds Tamil Nadu's education policy, says it will ensure equality
Actor and Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, Kamal Haasan has praised the new education policy of the Tamil Nadu government and said that it has been formulated with the noble intention of ensuring that quality education reaches students from humble backgrounds more than it does the privileged. "It is heartening to note that the new education policy of the Tamil Nadu government has been formulated with the noble intention of ensuring that quality education reaches students from humble backgrounds more than it does the privileged, and with a forward-looking vision to equip our students with the skills needed to face the new challenges of a changing world," tweeted Haasan. advertisementHe also said that the policy incorporates the principles of equality and social justice. He said that the removal of unnecessary exam, inclusion of provisions against unjust entrance examinations and announcement that the bilingual policy will continue are all commendable. "I wholeheartedly congratulate the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru MK Stalin, the Honorable Minister of School Education, Thiru Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, and the committee led by the former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Justice T Murugesan, who designed the Tamil Nadu State Education Policy, for their efforts toward the goal of quality education for all," wrote the veteran new education policy sticks to Tamil Nadu's long-standing two-language policy — Tamil and English. Every student, regardless of whether they study under CBSE, ICSE or state board, must learn Tamil up to Class 10. The state has clearly rejected any form of language new state education policy completely scraps public exams for Classes 3, 5 and 8 and mentions that all students will be promoted till Class 10, with no fail system in these years. Also, there will be no exams in Class 11 either. Through this, the government aims to reduce pressure and stop the early commercialisation of education. The state education policy has vehemently opposed NEET citing stress and inequality. The new policy firmly rejects central imposition and calls for more direct state investment in public schools and colleges. Tamil Nadu sees education as a state subject and argues for greater local control and public funding to ensure quality and access without over-reliance on private players.- EndsMust Watch

The police recovered a substantial haul of stolen items, comprising 120 grams of gold, 500 grams of silver, and Rs 8 lakh in cash from the suspects. The arrested individuals have been identified as Delhi residents Amit Shukla, Vijay Kamal, Akash Sharma, and Ravinder Tyagi. Zirakpur Superintendent of Police, Jaspinder Singh Gill, detailed the suspects' criminal backgrounds and their sophisticated methods. Amit Shukla, identified as the main accused, is already implicated in two prior cases of robbery and criminal conspiracy. The most shocking revelation pertains to Vijay Kamal, a former Delhi Police officer dismissed after his involvement in a kidnapping case. Kamal, who has a notorious history with eight registered cases of theft and robbery, is considered the mastermind behind several jewellery heists. Investigations revealed that Kamal went to great lengths to avoid detection during the Dhakoli robbery. To disguise himself, he meticulously learned to tie a turban using YouTube tutorials, a detail underscoring his cunning. Police disclosed that Kamal's criminal strategy involved a systematic reconnaissance process, where he tracked and observed jewellers for a period before carrying out the robbery. Interstate firearms syndicate busted, one arrested with 10 pistols
Police have arrested a 'key member of an inter-state illegal firearms syndicate' and recovered a large cache of weapons including 10 semi-automatic pistols from his possession on Wednesday evening, in a major crackdown ahead of Independence Day, officials said on Saturday. An FIR under Section 25(8) of the Arms (Amendment) Act, 2019, has been registered at Sarita Vihar police station. (Representational image) According to the police, the accused, identified as Amit Kumar, 29, a resident of Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, was nabbed near the Kos Minar roundabout in Jasola by the Special Task Force (STF) of Delhi Police's southeast district. The arrest yielded 10 semi-automatic pistols of .32 bore, 20 live cartridges and seven extra magazines, in addition to the 10 standard magazines supplied with the weapons — a total of 17 magazines, said deputy commissioner of police (southeast) Hemant Tiwari. 'Acting on month-long surveillance of known firearms suppliers in Madhya Pradesh, STF teams developed specific intelligence about Kumar's movements. A trap was laid between 8.30pm and 9.30pm at the Jasola location. At 8.45pm, Kumar, carrying a bag, was intercepted by a police team. A search of the bag revealed the consignment,' he said. He said that Kumar had procured the arms from a manufacturer in Dhar, Madhya Pradesh. 'During interrogation, he admitted to having supplied over 150 pistols in Delhi-NCR in the past two years, catering primarily to criminal networks. He also admitted that he had bought each pistol for ₹12,000–15,000 in Madhya Pradesh and sold them to criminals for ₹30,000–40,000 in Delhi-NCR and other states. Initially roped in by a fellow villager, he began as a courier but soon established his own distribution network. Kumar, a graduate, also worked as a recovery agent in a private bank in UP's Bhadohi district,' he added. An FIR under Section 25(8) of the Arms (Amendment) Act, 2019, has been registered at Sarita Vihar police station. 'Efforts are on to identify and nab other members of the syndicate. The recovery has dealt a significant blow to illegal arms trafficking in the region, especially ahead of the high-security Independence Day period,' Tiwari added.
