Chiefs GM Brett Veach on mindset after drafting a left tackle: 'Always chasing something'
During his press conference late Thursday night, Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach addressed his mindset moving forward in the draft after drafting left tackle Josh Simmons in the first round.
"I mean, we've won a lot of games, and we've been fortunate to win some Super Bowls, too. But I think it's the evolution of where you are with picking late in the draft and guys not becoming available, cap-based issues, and it's one of those things where it would maybe be nice not to have to attack the left tackle issue year in and year out," said Veach. "As soon as you start to solve that issue, you're going to have a we don't have an edge guy, or we don't have a guard, or there's, it's always in a revolving door."
The Chiefs used several players at left tackle last season, including Wanya Morris and Kingsley Suamataia. Veteran D.J. Humphries was signed late last year, and Joe Thuney moved from his guard position. Veach isn't done with improving the roster as the draft continues through the weekend in Green Bay.
"That's the beauty of this league, which makes it awesome. These teams and games are so close, and you win by the margins, so you're always chasing something," said Veach. "As soon as we get a great left tackle, we can try to find another one to replace them. That's just the way it is, and so we're just fortunate that it worked out today for us. We got to get really excited about it. There's a lot of work ahead, but there's a lot to work with."
Veach will enter day two of the draft with three listed picks as he continues to fill out the roster for the future.

The best receiver on the Kansas City Chiefs might be Rashee Rice instead of Travis Kelce.
The best receiver on the Kansas City Chiefs might be Rashee Rice instead of Travis Kelce. originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kansas City Chiefs superstar tight end Travis Kelce had one of the slowest seasons of his career this past season, as his age is definitely beginning to show. Advertisement As a result, someone is bound to step up and be the go-to weapon for Patrick Mahomes on the team's offense. In a recent article by PFF's Trevor Sikkema, he ranks who he believes is every NFL team's best quarterback-pass catcher duo. For the reigning AFC champions, he thinks that is no longer Mahomes and Kelce, but Mahomes and young wide receiver Rashee Rice. "One might be surprised that it's not Kelce who is tied to Mahomes," Sikkema wrote. "Mahomes owns an elite 90.0 PFF passing grade when targeting Rice over the past two seasons, but he does have four turnover-worthy plays to match four big-time throws and a low average depth of target of just 5.1 yards." Rice and Mahomes were ranked at No. 13 at Sikkema's list, so they will have a bit of proving together once the start of the 2025 season rolls around. Advertisement The 25-year-old played just three full games this past season, as a brutal knee injury in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers sidelined him the rest of the season. But in those three games, Rice was first in the league in receptions, and second in yards. Kansas City is coming off of a loss in the Super Bowl this past season to the Philadelphia Eagles, so Rice, Mahomes, and the rest of the team's offense will be looking to lead the team back to the playoffs to redeem themselves. Could the Kansas City Chiefs put an end to the trade rumors regarding tight end Kyle Pitts?
Could the Kansas City Chiefs put an end to the trade rumors regarding tight end Kyle Pitts? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With Xavier Worthy, Marquis "Hollywood" Brown, Rashee Rice and Travis Kelce preparing to line up and catch passes for star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, it's hard to ponder the need for more offensive firepower. Advertisement After all, the Chiefs have made three consecutive Super Bowls with Mahomes under head coach Andy Reid's revolutionary offensive schemes, even when deploying various receivers. This could certainly be enough for another deep playoff run. One move, however, is encouraging a Chiefs fan page to believe the offense could go to a "new level" and be set up well for the future. is pitching the idea for Kansas City to make a "splash" and trade for promising young tight end Kyle Pitts, who unfortunately has been used inefficiently with the Atlanta Falcons throughout his career and has been the center of trade talks for months. "While Atlanta marches to the beat of its own drum when it comes to managing its roster, there have been consistent trade rumblings. It is noteworthy that Pitts didn't take part in OTAs and remains in trade rumors dating back to the end of the season," Nick Halden wrote. Advertisement "It seems an early-day two pick might be enough to get the deal done in what would be a rental for the 2025 season. While this is a high price to pay for a lone season, the potential elite ability of the pass catcher makes the fit far too enticing not to consider." If any team can figure out how to utilize the uber-athletic target, it's the Chiefs. They have made a living on Kelce's usage as Mahomes' security blanket all throughout their AFC dominance in the decade. Pitts could fit in that mold while not needing to be a No. 1 option. He could also fill this role for years to come if Kelce is seriously flirting with retirement. Pitts' physical gifts could allow for even more creativity once he becomes the top tight end in Reid's scheme, as well. It's certainly a splashy move, but this could still turn into a trigger-happy dump of draft capital if nothing improves regarding Pitts production and fit into the offense. The addition makes for a loaded receiving corps with only one football to be passed around. Advertisement In a lesser role, Pitts could still learn the ropes of a new offense and find an area to contribute, especially under Kelce's tutelage. This trade would spark a reclamation mentality for Pitts to motivate him to return to his top-five pedigree from the 2021 Draft. It's not an exaggeration to say Chiefs fans have been spoiled with elite offense in recent years. A savvy move to land Pitts and intelligent coaching to integrate him effectively could result in the rich getting richer. Chiefs Offense Tipped To Be Top-10 Unit In 2025
Chiefs Offense Tipped To Be Top-10 Unit In 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Kansas City Chiefs have undergone a transformation of sorts over the past two seasons. No longer are they the swashbuckling offense under Patrick Mahomes, which drives the franchise forward. Advertisement It has been Steve Spagnuolo's defense that has been the driving force, leaving some to think if the Mahomes magic is starting to wear off. But as we have detailed this offseason, there were multiple reasons for that. Injured weapons and a poor offensive line are the main reasons for the drop in production, but the good news is that both are expected to be fixed heading into 2025. For Gennaro Filice, when ranking the top 10 offenses in football heading into the new year, he has Kansas City at No. 10. "Despite making the Super Bowl in each of the past two seasons, the Chiefs ranked 12th in offensive points per game in 2024 and 14th in 2023," Filice writes. "Everyone knows the main culprit for this downswing: an offensive line that sprung holes, especially on the edge. Consequently, Brett Veach aggressively targeted tackles in free agency (giving Trent Williams understudy Jaylon Moore a two-year, $30 million deal) and the 2025 NFL Draft (spending the first-round pick on Josh Simmons). Advertisement "Is that enough to fully patch up the problem areas? Maybe yes, maybe no -- but I trust Reid and Mahomes to put more points on the board this fall, one way or another, especially given cleaner bills of health from running back Isiah Pacheco and wide receivers Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown." Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy (right) and head coach Andy J. Rebilas-Imagn Images There is reason to be optimistic about the Chiefs in 2025, and if the injury bug can be avoided, then this unit should see an uptick in performance. Now, injuries are a part of football, but the Chiefs had them at a key position last season, so with Rice and Brown returning, coupled with an offensive line that should be better at protecting Patrick Mahomes (career-high 47 sacks last year), Kansas City might be more efficient going forward. Advertisement They might have lost a little of their aura after the Super Bowl loss, but if they can avoid the number of injuries suffered last year and get improved play across the board, then the Chiefs can easily have a top-10 offense in football.
