Celebration of Malaysia's favourite culinary creation
THIS National Day and Malaysia Day season, diners can enjoy a nostalgic journey through the country's most iconic flavours with a spectacular 'Nasi Lemak Buffet'.
Curated by chef Amir Roslie, the buffet at Sunset Terrace, Sunway Resort Hotel in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, highlights the nation's culinary creation with a vibrant display of rice, sambal, sides and heritage hot dishes.
Fragrant coconut rice, believed to have originated as far back as 15th century Melaka, takes centre stage.
A charming tale surrounds its name – when a daughter accidentally spilled coconut milk into a pot of rice, her mother, Mak, returned home and asked what the delicious aroma was.
The daughter replied: 'Nasi le, Mak!', which turned into the moment that may have given rise to the name nasi lemak.
This legend is brought to life through Amir's creative interpretations such as Nasi Lemak Hijau Pandan, Nasi Lemak Kuning Royal, Nasi Lemak Bunga Telang and Nasi Lemak Putih, each cooked with distinctive ingredients and presented with flair.
Complementing the rice is slow-cooked sambal made from premium chillies, including Sambal Bawang and Sambal Nyonya, alongside a curated showcase of anchovies, from Pangkor's Ikan Bilis Mata Biru to the delicate Ikan Bilis Jepun.
Guests can also enjoy a colourful spread of traditional crackers and an array of spiced chicken, beef and fish serunding.
The buffet also features rotating selections of hot dishes that highlight the diversity and depth of Malaysian cooking.
Highlights include Ayam Goreng Berempah, Cockles Rendang, Chilli Fried Beef Lung, Sambal Sotong, Daging Dendeng and Lamb Rendang.
Vegetarian options such as tempeh and Tauhu Goreng Kicap also make an appearance, ensuring there's something for every palate.
While nasi lemak remains the star of the show, guests can look forward to a wide selection of international buffet favourites including seafood on ice, salads and sushi.
The Nasi Lemak Buffet is on from Aug 22 to Sept 16.
It is available for lunch on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, priced at RM188+ per adult and RM94+ per child or senior citizen.
The dinner option from Fridays to Sundays and on public holidays is at RM198+ per adult and RM99+ per child or senior citizen.

Truly a memorable night as Atilla Haron and Salamiah Hassan delivers an unforgettable night at their sold-out concert
Fans were fully immersed at the Plenary Theatre at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), which overflowed with warmth, joy, and music as beloved Malaysian songstress Atilia Haron shared the spotlight with her mother, the nation's legendary voice Salamiah Hassan, in the sold-out 'Gelombang Bahagiaku' concert. From the very first note to the final bow, the audience was treated to a heartfelt journey across generations, where every song felt like a heartwarming love letter — from mother to daughter, from stage to fans. For Atilia, the concert was not just a performance, but the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. 'Since I was little, I dreamed of being like mama. To finally share a stage with her, in front of a full house… it still feels surreal. We started this project with no sponsors, but with the love and support of friends, family, and our incredible band, we made it happen. I will carry this night in my heart forever,' she said with emotion. For Salamiah, the evening was pure joy. 'Singing with my daughter for the entire concert… that's the greatest gift I could ever receive. I'm so happy and grateful. I hope we can do this again, and again,' she said, her eyes shining. Atilia opened the night with 'No Fruits For Today', followed by heartfelt numbers such as 'Old Love' and 'Rekah', an emotional medley of 'Bodoh' and 'Cinta Sampai Mati', and a high-energy collaboration with MonoloQue on 'Kekanda Adinda'. She also delivered her signature 'Bahagiaku', before teaming up with musician Jason Voo for 'Salah Sangka', 'Sangkar', 'Sudah' and 'Selagi'. Salamiah brought her unmatched charm and versatility, moving effortlessly from the upbeat 'I'm So Excited' to the poignant 'Surat Terakhir', a nostalgic medley of 'Miang Miang Keladi' – 'Kau Dan Alasanmu' – 'Antara Dua Kasih', the jazzy 'Frim Fram Sauce', a romantic duet with Hardy Arbi on 'Berdebar-Debar Rasa Hati', and her evergreen 'Kenang Daku Dalam Doamu'. Special guest Mimifly added her own flavour with a 'Sahabat' – 'Angkat' medley, before Salamiah returned with 'Superstar', 'Semut Semut Di Titian Usang', 'Menghitung Hari', 'If You Go Away' and her legendary 'Gelombang'. The finale — the first-ever mother-daughter duet 'Age Is Just The Number' brought the house to its feet, before the joyous, all-star performance of 'Empat Dara' with Mimifly and Elvira Arul wrapped the night in pure celebration. 'When we looked into each other's eyes while singing, it felt like time stopped. That moment… I had been waiting for it my whole life,' Atilia shared. And Salamiah then added tenderly: 'I could see the love and fire in Atilia's eyes. That's when I thought — this is what happiness truly is." The love from the audience was as incredible as the music itself. Concert merchandise — specially designed t-shirts limited to 100 pieces were sold out in a flash. 'It's our first time creating merchandise. Seeing our fans wearing the t-shirts, smiling, and taking pictures with us, it was priceless,' said Atilia. As a true icon, Salamiah also offered her thoughts on the next generation of singers. 'Today's young artists are so talented — they write their own music, they study their craft. Even after 55 years in this industry, I'm still learning. Because art… is a journey with no finish line,' she reflected. Closing the evening, Atilia shared her renewed passion for music after focusing on her yoga business in recent years. 'Next year, I want to do more shows. I've missed the stage so much. Tonight proves that when you combine music with family love — it's just pure magic,' she said with conviction. The 'Gelombang Bahagiaku' concert was more than a night of songs — it was a living testament to the power of love, legacy, and music that knows no generational boundaries.

KUALA LUMPUR: The vibrant display of the Jalur Gemilang across the city has not only stirred national pride but also captivated foreign tourists. A German software developer, Anna Becker, 36, expressed surprise at the abundance of flags lining the streets and buildings. Seo Yeon, a 28-year-old tourist from South Korea, found the pre-celebration atmosphere thrilling but regretted missing the actual parade. She recalled watching a lively National Day parade video online, featuring marching bands and large crowds. Daniel Hughes, a 34-year-old engineer from England, said the widespread flag displays would remain a cherished memory.
