Parliamentary panel recommends RRTS link between IGI and Jewar Airports
New Delhi, Jul 22 (PTI) A parliamentary panel has recommended that the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry connect the Indira Gandhi International Airport and the under-construction Jewar airport through the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors.
The Standing Committee on Housing and Urban Affairs, chaired by Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy, appreciated the efforts of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) for ensuring multimodal integration of RRTS with other transport modes such as metro rail, railways, inter-state bus terminals (ISBTs), bus depots and expressways.
In its report, the committee emphasised that Jewar Airport is expected to become a key transport hub for residents of Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, and nearby areas in the future. The growth of dense residential areas, employment opportunities, entertainment zones, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities along the Ghaziabad-Noida-Greater Noida corridor makes it even more crucial to connect these areas through a fast, safe, reliable, and efficient transport system like RRTS.
'The integration of RRTS will not only improve connectivity but will also enhance the ridership and financial viability of the Delhi-Meerut Corridor. It will provide much-needed connectivity to Jewar Airport, a vital node in the region's transportation network," the committee said.
The panel also noted that two major transport nodes in Delhi-NCR — Indira Gandhi International Airport and Jewar Airport — are yet to be integrated with the RRTS network. Regarding the IGIA-RRTS integration, the committee acknowledged that earlier it had been informed the linkage would be implemented via the Delhi-SNB corridor. 'However, the DPR (Detailed Project Report) for this corridor is currently being revisited by NCRTC," it said.
The committee, therefore, recommended that both airports be connected to the RRTS network to boost regional connectivity and streamline passenger movement.
On the matter of public safety and comfort, the panel recommended conducting a study on the impact of vibrations from the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor on nearby structures, including residential buildings, offices, hospitals, and educational institutions. It also suggested the installation of sound barriers to minimize disturbance to residents and users of these facilities.
'The installation of sound barriers is important to prevent inconvenience to the public due to the operation of Namo Bharat trains," the committee added.
Regarding medical provisions, the committee noted that first-aid services have been established, and NCRTC has partnered with hospitals within a 10-kilometre radius of the Delhi-Meerut corridor for emergency medical support. TDP-led govt tarnishing Andhra Pradeshs image, says YSRCP
Amaravati, Jul 30 (PTI) The YSRCP on Wednesday accused the TDP-led NDA government in Andhra Pradesh of tarnishing the state's image by allegedly extorting industrialists, including a leading automobile manufacturer in Rayalaseema. The former MP claimed that leaders of the ruling alliance were demanding contracts, commissions and jobs, which he said could lead to factory closures and relocation of industries. 'The coalition government is tarnishing Andhra Pradesh's industrial and social fabric," YSRCP leader Talari Rangaiah said in a release issued by the party. 'Instead of visionary governance promised by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, what we see is extortion and mismanagement," he alleged. Rangaiah accused the government of 'plundering" the state's natural resources such as sand, quartz and liquor, and of stifling avenues of wealth creation. He further alleged that welfare schemes were being 'manipulated to benefit party loyalists, in violation of the principle of impartiality". The YSCRCP claimed that the number of welfare pension beneficiaries is 'steadily declining", while field assistants, animators and contractors are being retrenched, contradicting the government's promises of job creation. Rangaiah said the previous YSRCP ensured transparent and corruption-free delivery of welfare schemes through direct benefit transfer. This corrupt government threatens industries and impoverishes citizens, he alleged, calling for immediate corrective measures to protect Andhra Pradesh's economic and social future. Senior TDP leader G Deepak Reddy hit back at Rangaiah, accusing him of making false claims. 'These statements are not only factually incorrect but a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and cover up the YSRCP government's anti-industry track record," Reddy told PTI. It was under the visionary leadership of Naidu that the automobile company was brought to Andhra Pradesh, he said, adding that the state government at that time ensured a conducive environment for industrial growth, resulting in one of the largest foreign investments in the state's history. The automobile company created thousands of direct and indirect jobs, boosting the local economy and placing Andhra Pradesh on the global industrial map, he said. Contrary to the YSRCP's claims, Reddy said, it is their actions that have undermined investor confidence. He said the TDP is committed to transparent, industry-friendly governance and the creation of quality employment opportunities for the people of Andhra Pradesh. 'We call upon the YSRCP to refrain from spreading misinformation and instead focus on creating a stable and welcoming environment for investment and development," Reddy said. The move, announced o Wednesday, amid growing restrictions from China on the supply of crucial electronic components, is expected to hit both production and export plans from India, especially in the electronics sector. As per news agency PTI, experts say this dual challenge, China's clampdown on parts and the US's new tariff regime, could slow down electronics manufacturing and hurt India's goal of becoming a global export centre. 'Today's sudden announcement of 25 per cent tariffs on exports from India to the US will certainly hit Apple's plan of making India a large export hub for iPhone exports to the US,' said Navkendar Singh, associate VP for devices research at IDC India, South Asia & ANZ, as quoted by PTI. Singh explained that around 25% of iPhone shipments, about 60 million annually, go to the US. Apple CEO Tim Cook had even announced that all iPhones sold in the US during April to June would be shipped from India. These units are assembled at Foxconn's factory in Tamil Nadu. However, CyberMedia Research VP Prabhu Ram noted that near-term challenges like increased costs on India-assembled iPhones could affect demand and push Apple to rework its supply chain. 'India will remain a critical lynchpin in Apple's global strategy,' he added, but cautioned that the country must reduce its upstream dependencies to ensure supply chain resilience. Industry groups remain unclear whether Trump's new 25% duty will be on top of the existing 10% baseline tariff. Trump had earlier imposed the 10% tariff on most Indian goods in April. Elcina secretary general Rajoo Goel believes a 15% increase over the existing duty is likely. 'A 15 per cent increase in import duty will definitely impact our electronics exports, especially mobiles, telecom, auto and consumer equipment,' he said. Goel also warned that China's actions on critical inputs will raise production costs and shrink export demand, slowing down growth. Ashok Chandak, president of IESA and SEMI India, warned that India could lose competitiveness to other Asian nations if the 25% tariff is enforced. He stressed the need to diversify exports, build domestic markets, and move up the value chain. 'India doesn't make semiconductors, so the short-term impact is minimal. But we need to move out of China's shadow to be truly competitive,' Chandak said. The Indian government, in a statement, said it is studying the implications of Trump's move and remains hopeful of finalising a fair and balanced bilateral trade deal. It assured that all necessary steps would be taken to protect India's national interests. Talks for the India-US bilateral trade agreement have been ongoing since March, with both sides aiming to double trade to $500 billion by 2030. Five rounds of discussions have been completed, and a sixth is scheduled for August 25. A partial agreement may be reached by September or October. HRTC Drivers Union calls off agitation after govt agrees to some demands
Shimla, Jul 30 (PTI) The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) Drivers' Union on Wednesday called off its agitation after the government agreed to accept some of their demands. This came a day after union leaders held a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, who also holds the transport portfolio, which went on late into the evening. During the meeting, the union leaders gave a detailed account of their demands to Agnihotri, an official statement issued here said. The protesters' demands include the release of over Rs 200-crore pending dues, including night overtime allowance of the last five years, medical reimbursement of over three years, pay commission arrears and eight-hour shifts, among other things. The union had threatened to stop night bus services if its demands were not accepted by July 31. The HRTC has about 12,000 employees, including 7,000 drivers and conductors. It has a fleet of over 3,500 luxury, ordinary and electric buses, tempo travellers and taxis. Deputy CM Agnihotri said that considering the seriousness of the issues raised by the union leaders, he took some immediate decisions like designating 205 senior most drivers as 'designated senior drivers" and settlement of medical reimbursement claims within six months, which created an atmosphere of trust and understanding among the employees. The staff will also be provided two sets of uniform and two pending instalments of night overtime allowance will be released with salaries in July and August. The government has also approved a loan of Rs 150 crore to the HRTC, which will be obtained with bank guarantee from the government and the interest will be paid by the government, he said. The state government is sensitive to the concerns of employees and pensioners and committed to protect their legitimate interests, the deputy CM said. He assured that the remaining issues of HRTC employees will be resolved in a timely manner.
