Is Blackpool's new Reform pub all it seems?
Fleet Street's finest packed their features writers off to Euston station last week with the news that the first Reform-themed pub in the country had opened its doors in Blackpool.
But was all exactly what it seemed? Campaign group Hope Not Hate have done some digging and found that, while the Talbot had indeed once been a Conservative club, it hasn't been since 2012. And, having long since been rebranded, it has proved a popular destination for some characters with pretty unsavoury views – until, in several cases, they are cancelled.
One such event cancelled in 2018 was The Road Ahead, a day of political speeches and entertainment 'with a focus on future politics, organising growth and leadership'. Co-owner Nick Lowe defended his bookings, saying: 'Every year people slag us off on Facebook saying it's a Nazi event, but it's not. I'm not racist. If somebody wants to book my room and I'm going to make money off it I'm going to do it. It's not against the law.'
It is a mite unfortunate, then, that three of the listed speakers have since been prosecuted for actually breaking the law, through incitement to racial hatred: Jez Turner, who called for 'soldiers' to liberate England from 'Jewish control' in an address outside Downing Street, Alison Chabloz, a musician with ditties suggesting the Holocaust was 'a bunch of lies' and referring to Auschwitz as a 'theme park', and 'Rev James', actually James Costello, an unordained cleric who also goes by the name of Pontifex Maximus.
The pub was also forced to cancel a music festival, Real Rebellion, last year after Hope Not Hate reported on the dubious politics of some of the bands involved. Canadian group Battlefront's tunes include Aryan Soldiers, Pride is our Will and String 'em Up, while Germans Combat BC decorated the cover of album No Apologies – No Regrets with imagery popular with the country's 1933-45 government.
'It's nowt to do with me. I just rent the room out,' Nick Lowe told the Blackpool Gazette at the time. 'I'm not racist at all but I have to make money somehow.'
Now, though, he is busy entertaining the many journalists making the trip north to London to marvel at his rebranding exercise. It's an unfortunate history alright – but on the other hand, as the Telegraph points out, 'the pie and mash will only set you back £3.20, while a chicken curry can be had for £3.50 and a Sunday roast is £5'.

This comes ahead of a meeting between the US vice-president and Reform UK Leader Nigel Farage tomorrow. The pair will have breakfast in the Cotswolds as Vance enjoys both business and pleasure during his UK summer holiday. Already, Vance has held meetings with a number of other political figures during his trip, including Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick. He had tried to set up a meeting with his friend Kemi Badenoch but their schedules were not compatible. Vance has shown an increasing interest in Reform UK, with it being reported in July he had asked Peter Mandelson about the party, noticing that "they're doing very well". Other attendees at Monday's barbecue were Cambridge academic James Orr and Tory MP Danny Kruger. Describing the image of Vance and Skinner at the event, the former Apprentice star said: "Here is a pic of Me and Vice President towards the end of the night after a few beers. Skinner has found himself catapulted to fame over recent years, following his appearance on The Apprentice in 2019. VANCE HOLIDAYING ACROSS UK JD Vance 's trip to the UK has seen him travelling through the Cotswolds and southern England with his family. The vice-president, his wife Usha, and children Ewan, 8, Vivek, 5, and Mirabel, 3, were seen travelling together in an extensive motorcade. Some locals were left disgruntled, however, as he visited a posh farm shop in the area - leading to a number of road closures and security checkpoints manned by police with sniffer dogs. His 18-strong motorcade caused disruption around Chipping Norton as the VP visited the Daylesford Organic farm shop. Several large black SUVs carrying people believed to be Secret Service agents were seen parked on the driveway. It came after a meeting with Foreign Secretary David Lammy at Chevening House in Kent on Friday. The pair are understood to have forged an unlikely friendship, even spending time with each other's families outside of business meetings. During their meeting, the VP urged Britain to avoid the "very dark path" of silencing free speech. He warned that the West has grown "a little too comfortable with censoring" during his press conference with the foreign secretary. He said: "I think the entire collective West, the transatlantic relationship, our Nato allies, certainly the United States under the Biden administration, got a little too comfortable with censoring rather than engaging with a diverse array of opinions." Mr Vance has previously slammed Britain for enforcing some of the toughest restrictions on free speech globally. In February, during a televised meeting between Sir Keir Starmer and Donald Trump in the Oval Office, the Vice President flagged that "infringements on free speech" are now impacting not only Brits but also American tech firms, "and by extension American citizens". Vance's latest tirade comes after the UK launched a divisive new Online Safety Act which targets children's social media usage.

AN ILLEGAL migrant boasted on TikTok of crossing the Channel by dinghy, saying: 'Tell your friends to come.' The man racked up nearly a million views with a step-by-step guide to crossing the Channel on a small boat — and then told others to follow him as he revelled in his taxpayer-funded asylum hotel. 7 7 7 Known as Alexandra420, he said his wish had come true and that this was 'the best place' during a TikTok livestream at his free accommodation near Heathrow. His taunts come as figures reveal 50,271 people have crossed in a small boat since Labour and Sir Keir Starmer took office last year. Last night Reform leader Nigel Farage MP told The Sun: 'This is yet another total humiliation for our country. "The Prime Minister's soft-touch approach and refusal to address the root cause of illegal Channel crossings has turned the UK into a global laughing stock.' TikTok influencer Alexandra, who has 70,000 followers, left Calais in a dinghy at around 4am on Saturday. His first video was a 13-second clip from the middle of the Channel, showing a French lifeboat alongside his dinghy, which was full of fellow migrants. The next clip showed him grinning in an orange life jacket and pointing to the sky. A third video, bizarrely set to the theme tune of US TV drama Prison Break, showed the vessel surrounded by massive freight ships, while in a fourth he dipped his designer trainers in the water. He was one of 435 arrivals on Saturday, and was taken in by Border Force officials to be processed at Manston, Kent. He was then bussed to the four-star Crowne Plaza hotel in West Drayton, near Heathrow. The migrant, thought to be from Afghanistan, treats TikTok viewers to a tour of his room, which had two single beds and a double plus an en-suite bathroom. He also shows them the view from his window. Triumphing in his good fortune, he said: 'This is dedicated to those haters who were happy thinking we either drowned or ended up dead.' In a later livestream he claimed their boat began to deflate halfway through the crossing and could have capsized if Border Force officials had not rescued them. He said: 'It was dangerous. Our boat sank. It was punctured. The water came from the inside of the boat. "On the other side, three people pumped the water. If the British boats hadn't come in an hour, we would have been in trouble.' He then encouraged others to pay thousands to people-smugglers to make the same perilous journey. He ranted: 'I risked my life, I spent my money, I came. Your country is not your mother. "Those who want to come, this is the best place. Don't be stingy. Your country is not your father, that you are so stingy. Live your life. 'Tell your four friends to come. Why are you so stingy? Being stingy is not good for God. You see, I risked my life! Why don't you come? My wish was to come to this hotel and live. I came here just for this.' 7 7 He also revealed how he beat warnings of deportation, claiming he had been told by UK officials: 'If I send you to France, you won't have any problem.' But he replied: 'I will commit suicide.' He went on: 'I just said it, and he got angry. I told them, and right there, I swore an oath.' His viewers appeared to include other asylum seekers in different hotels across the country. One told the host, who flashed his purple room key card, that the Crowne Plaza was 'a nice place'. The videos had a combined 870,000 views before being taken down during a second livestream when The Sun alerted TikTok. 7 Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp blasted: 'It is disgraceful that illegal immigrants are saying it is their dream to be put up in a hotel, all paid for by the British taxpayer. 'This is a sick joke. Anyone coming to the UK illegally must be swiftly deported.' Dozens of migrants have made social media posts celebrating their arrival in the UK. The Heathrow Crowne Plaza used to cost guests £120 a night — but has been housing migrants for more than four years, and has an 8ft security fence. Facilities include a luxury swimming pool with steam room and sauna, gym, an Irish bar, two large restaurants and a theatre. More illegal arrivals were brought in on packed buses yesterday alongside vans delivering food. One Afghan man told The Sun: 'I came to Britain a few days ago on a boat from France. This hotel is nice and we get fed and given clothes. Life is nice here so far.' A TikTok spokeswoman said it has a zero-tolerance approach to content promoting people-smuggling. A Home Office spokeswoman said it is unacceptable 'to promote the criminal services of people-traffickers or for social media companies to allow it'. Laws are being brought in to make it easier to prosecute, she added.
