Is Blackpool's new Reform pub all it seems?
The Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, New Statesman and i were among those who dispatched colour writers to the town's Talbot pub following the news that the long-standing Conservative club had defected to Nigel Farage's mob and decked itself out in Reform colours ('As GB News blared from several screens inside, most pub-goers sat out on the newly-painted terrace enjoying their cheap drinks in the sun this week,' marvelled the Telegraph's Tom McArdle.)
Fleet Street's finest packed their features writers off to Euston station last week with the news that the first Reform-themed pub in the country had opened its doors in Blackpool.
But was all exactly what it seemed? Campaign group Hope Not Hate have done some digging and found that, while the Talbot had indeed once been a Conservative club, it hasn't been since 2012. And, having long since been rebranded, it has proved a popular destination for some characters with pretty unsavoury views – until, in several cases, they are cancelled.
One such event cancelled in 2018 was The Road Ahead, a day of political speeches and entertainment 'with a focus on future politics, organising growth and leadership'. Co-owner Nick Lowe defended his bookings, saying: 'Every year people slag us off on Facebook saying it's a Nazi event, but it's not. I'm not racist. If somebody wants to book my room and I'm going to make money off it I'm going to do it. It's not against the law.'
It is a mite unfortunate, then, that three of the listed speakers have since been prosecuted for actually breaking the law, through incitement to racial hatred: Jez Turner, who called for 'soldiers' to liberate England from 'Jewish control' in an address outside Downing Street, Alison Chabloz, a musician with ditties suggesting the Holocaust was 'a bunch of lies' and referring to Auschwitz as a 'theme park', and 'Rev James', actually James Costello, an unordained cleric who also goes by the name of Pontifex Maximus.
The pub was also forced to cancel a music festival, Real Rebellion, last year after Hope Not Hate reported on the dubious politics of some of the bands involved. Canadian group Battlefront's tunes include Aryan Soldiers, Pride is our Will and String 'em Up, while Germans Combat BC decorated the cover of album No Apologies – No Regrets with imagery popular with the country's 1933-45 government.
'It's nowt to do with me. I just rent the room out,' Nick Lowe told the Blackpool Gazette at the time. 'I'm not racist at all but I have to make money somehow.'
Now, though, he is busy entertaining the many journalists making the trip north to London to marvel at his rebranding exercise. It's an unfortunate history alright – but on the other hand, as the Telegraph points out, 'the pie and mash will only set you back £3.20, while a chicken curry can be had for £3.50 and a Sunday roast is £5'.

They decided to investigate a suspect believed to be armed at 9.50pm. The suspect fled on foot into a nearby apartment as cops ran behind, according to Chicago Police Department Supt. Larry Snelling. When police entered the apartment, another person pointed a rifle at them. An officer discharged his weapon during the confrontation leading Rivera to be shot, Snelling said. As she was being transported to the local hospital, the police vehicle reportedly caught fire and as a result, Rivera had to be put in another car, according to Snelling. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. Another officer suffered a wrist injury, requiring hospitalization, according to Fox 32 Chicago. Dozens of police officers and firefighters paid their respects, walking in procession at 3am from the hospital to the Cook County Medical Examiners Office. The Chicago Police Department said Rivera was a 'courageous and compassionate officer who devoted her career to helping others and protecting our city'. He added: 'She was a hero, and she lost her life tragically doing the job that she loved. 'That was one of the things that her mother said, she loved her job, and the way that she worked.' In an Instagram post, the Chicago Fire Department posted a picture of the tragic officer, saying she 'made the ultimate sacrifice in service' to the city. According to Snelling, two people inside the apartment fled the apartment but were taken into custody soon after. He added that 'several individuals" are in custody, as three weapons were recovered from the scene. Police and the Chicago Office of Police Accountability, which assesses incidents that involve officers firing weapons, are conducting an investigation. Speaking about Rivera, Snelling said: 'She had already processed two other guns working that day. 'She was a working police officer trying to keep the street safe. And she did great work. "And if you talk to anyone on her team, they would tell you how great of a worker she was. "This is the risk that our officers take every single day.' Snelling added that "this happens way too often", saying: "An officer, a young officer, 36-years-old and four years on the job. Sarwar says surprise by-election win could help Labour back to power at Holyrood
Mr Sarwar and his party celebrated in the early hours of Friday morning after Labour's Davy Russell was elected as the new MSP for Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse, winning the seat from the SNP. With the votes showing a swing of more than 7% from the SNP to Labour, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said on Friday the result showed people have 'voted for change'. The by-election had been held following the death earlier this year of Scottish Government minister Christina McKelvie. When the votes were counted, Mr Russell polled 8,559, SNP candidate Katy Loudon took 7,957 votes, while Reform's Ross Lambie secured 7,088. And although Mr Russell was elected with fewer votes than Labour secured in the seat in the 2021 Scottish Parliament election, the SNP's support fell from just over 46% of all ballots then to 29.35% in the by-election. Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice insisting they were 'delighted' with coming third – despite speculation prior to the count that they could come in second or may even pull off a surprise victory. Labour's win came after Scotland's First Minister John Swinney – who made numerous campaign visits to the area – had declared the contest to be a 'two-horse race' between the SNP and Nigel Farage's Reform. But speaking at a media event in Hamilton on Friday morning, Mr Sarwar accused the SNP leader of running a 'disgraceful' campaign. Mr Sarwar also insisted the by-election could 'help lead the way' to him becoming Scotland's next first minister in the May 2026 Holyrood elections. The Scottish Labour leader said he believed the victory to be 'even more significant' than the party's win in the nearby Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election in October 2023 – which he said had been key in helping to secure Labour's general election win in July last year. Mr Sarwar declared: 'I think in some ways this by-election result is even more significant than the Rutherglen by-election result two years ago. 'It is right to say, I believe, the result in Rutherglen helped lead the way in helping to elect a UK Labour Government and I also believe the by-election result here will help lead the way to elect a Scottish Labour government next year.' Looking ahead to that election, Mr Sarwar told the PA news agency: 'I want us to gain scores of seats across the country so we can remove this SNP government from office.' He went on to accuse Mr Swinney of running a 'disgraceful campaign' in the by-election, saying that despite the SNP having been in power for 18 years, 'the best he had to offer was 'vote SNP to stop Farage''. And while Reform UK came in third in the by-election, Mr Sarwar said Mr Farage's party could not win the Scottish Parliament elections. He insisted: 'Nigel Farage is not standing to be first minister. 'It is a straight choice – it is either going to be John Swinney, or it's going to be me.' The Scottish Labour leader continued: 'The choice is stark next year. Our Parliament is not about protests, our election is not about protest, it is about choosing a government here in Scotland. 'The choice is stark – a third decade of the SNP with John Swinney as first minister or a new direction for Scotland with me as first minister.' However, Mr Tice told BBC Radio 4's that the result in Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse was 'truly remarkable'. He said: 'We've come from nowhere to being in a three-way marginal, and we're within 750 votes of winning that by-election and just a few hundred votes of defeating the SNP, so it's an incredible result.' Mr Swinney, meanwhile, said the SNP was 'clearly disappointed' with the result. The party leader said Labour had 'won by an absolute landslide' in Rutherglen and Hamilton West – noting the SNP 'came much closer' this time round. But he added: 'The people of Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse have made clear that we still have work to do. 'Over the next few days, we will take time to consider the result fully.'

Putin's 'secret daughter' works at anti-war art galleries in European capital
The Kremlin has never commented on the alleged links between Elizaveta Krivonogikh, born in 2003, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite others noting their resemblance Vladimir Putin's alleged secret daughter is reportedly working at art galleries in Paris that show exhibitions denouncing her father's war in Ukraine. Elizaveta Krivonogikh, 22, who is also known as Luiza Rozova and now Elizaveta Rudnova, is said to be schmoozing with Ukrainian artists as well as Russia dissidents in the heart of France's capital. She is reportedly working at L Galerie in Belleville and Espace Albatros in Montreuil. News outlet Meduza cites a Russian artist claiming both galleries are known for exhibiting anti-war work. Her gallery manager role also includes making videos that have sparked ire among exiled Russians and Ukrainians. Commenting online, artist Nastya Rodionova - who fled Russia following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 - said: "It's important to say that I believe in the presumption of innocence and that children are not responsible for the crimes of their parents. "But with the war reaching its heights it is inadmissible to allow a person who comes from a family of beneficiaries of [Putin's] regime to come into confrontation with the victims of that regime. We need to know who we are working with and decide whether we are ready for that. My personal answer in this case is no." But Dmitry Dolinsky, the director of L Association that controls Studio Albatros and L Galerie, backed Elizaveta's role and cast doubt over whether she is actually Putin's daughter. Speaking to The Times, he said: "She looks like Putin but so do 100,000 other people. I haven't seen a DNA test." She has also been praised as a "cultured person" and an "excellent worker". However, some like Nastya say victims of the war should not feel forced to share a space with anyone with connections to the regime. Elisaveta's mum, Svetlana Krivonogikh, was sanctioned by the Conservative government in 2023. She is thought to own £73m worth of properties. Elizaveta ditched social media just before the Russian invasion of Ukraine but previously shared snaps of her glitzy lifestyle. Ukrainian TV claimed she lived in Paris with a passport under the name Rudnova. The Kremlin as never spoken about alleged ties between her and Putin, nor has Elizaveta publicly confirmed a link to the Russian despot. Putin has only acknowledged his daughters Maria and Katerina from his marriage to Lyudmila Putina, who he had been married to until 2014. He is rumoured to have more children, including sons with the former gymnast Alina Kabaeva.
