Cop crackdown on illegal use of blue beacons
1 2 Kolkata: Cops are going after illegal beacons, filing FIRs, and even arresting the accused. Days after the Behala Police arrested a 68-year-old man last week for allegedly impersonating a govt official and using a blue beacon and other unauthorized official symbols on his vehicle in south Kolkata, the Entally Police booked another person for using an illegal blue beacon. Entally Police initiated an investigation into a case of violating traffic rules on Beleghata Road when a private car was found using an illegal blue beacon. The incident occurred on June 22 around 11.45 am near the Gandhi Statue. Sergeant Sovanlal Mukherjee of Sealdah Traffic Guard filed a suo-moto complaint against the unidentified driver and owner of a private vehicle. According to the complaint, the vehicle was driven rashly while illegally using a blue beacon light. "The case has been registered at Entally Police Station under Section 223 of the BNS Act, read with Sections 108, 177, and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, along with Section 39 of the MV Act. The incident represents a breach of orders promulgated by public servants," said an officer. Cops confirmed that the investigation is currently ongoing, with efforts to identify and apprehend the responsible parties. Police found him using a blue beacon light and displaying official stickers and signage of the National Crime Investigation Bureau (NCIB) on his SUV. Sergeant Anirban Dawn of the Diamond Harbour Road Traffic Guard, who made the arrest after spotting and stopping the vehicle at a busy traffic intersection, filed a formal complaint at Behala Police Station. The vehicle was seized as evidence, and Chakraborty was charged under multiple sections of the Bengal Motor Vehicle Rules. "The complainant, Sergeant Dawn, handed over the accused person along with the said vehicle, which were seized, and the accused person was arrested. Further investigation of the case is on to ascertain the motive of the accused and why he was travelling in Behala," said DC (Behala-SWD) Rahul De. The arrest comes as part of a broader crackdown on the illegal use of beacons and official symbols in the city. Police authorities have recently initiated communication with 53 different state and central govt offices in Kolkata to ensure compliance with beacon regulations issued by the Bengal govt. "We have circulated official notifications to all govt offices clarifying the ranks eligible for beacon-fitted vehicles," said a senior cop. Lalbazar has noted recent instances of unauthorized use of beacon-fitted vehicles, which violate Supreme Court directives and sections 108(2) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules and 226(3) of the West Bengal Motor Vehicles Rules. This incident highlights the ongoing challenge authorities face in curbing the misuse of official symbols and unauthorized beacons, which are often used to gain undue advantages or evade traffic regulations. Police officials have urged citizens to report any suspicious use of official symbols or beacons on private vehicles to help maintain law and order in the city.

Over 8.5 lakh mule accounts in 700 bank branches used by cyber criminals: CBI
The CBI has detected 8.50 lakh mule bank accounts in over 700 branches nationwide which are being used by cyber criminals to launder proceeds from scams involving digital theft, impersonation, fraudulent investments, and UPI-based frauds, an enquiry by the agency has found. The central agency's crackdown on these mule accounts, opened using fake IDs for the limited use of siphoning victims' money, came through a coordinated search operation recently at 42 locations in Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh during which nine suspects were taken into custody, officials said Thursday. Those taken into custody include alleged middlemen, agents, aggregators, account holders, and banking correspondents, all believed to be instrumental in orchestrating and facilitating the opening of these fictitious accounts, they said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Skopje: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo A mule account opened in the name of an individual who may or may not be aware that the account is used to launder illicit money. The CBI has found that these mule accounts -- established using falsified identification documents -- were primarily used as conduits for siphoning funds from unsuspecting victims. Live Events Alarmingly, the CBI's preliminary findings suggest that some bank officials, e-Mitra agents, and third-party facilitators may have actively colluded with fraudsters by facilitating account creation and enabling fund withdrawals. "We have observed that mule accounts are being used only once in most cases. Once the money comes into the account, it is distributed to other accounts, and the mother account is closed, making it difficult to catch the criminal," an official told PTI. The searches came after a new CBI FIR which was necessitated after the agency's findings during an enquiry. The CBI had launched an inquiry to unravel the architecture of this laundering ecosystem and assess the complicity of financial personnel and the deficiencies in institutional safeguards. "Enquiry revealed that more than 700 branches of various banks across India have opened around 8.5 lakh mule accounts. These accounts were opened either without proper KYC norms, customer due diligence, or initial risk assessment. The branch managers of the banks have also failed to conduct enhanced due diligence in respect of certain suspicious transaction alerts generated by the systems," CBI's spokesperson said. The agency said its enquiry uncovered systemic lapses with some banks neglecting to dispatch acknowledgement or confirmation letters, a routine measure to verify the authenticity of a customer's address. The CBI also found violations of guidelines issued vide the RBI master circular and certain internal guidelines issued by the banks. Following the findings, the CBI has registered an FIR for offences of criminal conspiracy , cheating, forgery, use of forged documents as genuine under IPC/BNS and also the offence of criminal misconduct by bank officials under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The search operation by the CBI resulted in seizure of incriminating documents and digital evidences, mobile phones, bank account opening documents, transactions details, KYC documents have been seized and identification of individuals including middlemen involved in opening of mule bank account was done.

No visitor pass, sr citizen fakes ticket to enter airport
1 2 3 Kolkata: In absence of visitor passes at Kolkata airport, which have been suspended since Covid, an elderly man was apprehended at airport after the staff found that he entered the terminal using a fake air ticket to bid farewell to his son and daughter-in-law, who were leaving for Bangkok. The accused, a resident of Madurdaha off Bypass, admitted that his son helped him make the fake ticket for an IndiGo flight to Bangkok with a fake PNR, with which he entered the terminal, fooling the CISF personnel at the entrance gate along a non-DigiYatra gate. He bid farewell to the couple and was apprehended when he tried to leave the airport premises through a departure gate around 6 pm. As per rule, one cannot exit the terminal from departure gate. The CISF personnel took the elderly man to the IndiGo international counter. On verification, staff found inconsistencies in his ticket and alerted airport authorities, who in turn called cops. However, the cops haven't arrested the man. We are probing further to determine the extent of the offence and the role of his son in readying the forged document," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police. Suspension of visitor entry passes at airport has significantly inconvenienced travellers and their families. According to travellers, having family members present during flight delays or sudden changes offers not only mental support but also helps in spending time at airport more comfortably. Airport management stated that restriction on visitor passes was implemented following directives from BCAS (Bureau of Civil Aviation Security), which oversees airport security nationwide. Officials said the decision that was initially enforced after the pandemic for security reasons has now become permanent. According to airport sources, approximately 1,000 visitor passes were issued daily, generating around Rs 60,000 in revenue each day. This not only led to income for the airport but also offered significant convenience to travellers. An official said that during festivals, Independence Day, Republic Day, and similar occasions when a red alert was sounded for security reasons, the visitor pass service was temporarily halted. It has now been completely discontinued, causing inconvenience to public. Serious allegations of bias have emerged as some travellers claim that while ordinary individuals are denied visitor entry, netas and their supporters are readily granted access. A traveller said, "We have noticed that some special individuals still receive visitor passes. If security is the reason, then why not have the same rule for everyone?"
