KOTA KINABALU (July 19): Siti Nur Hanisah Omar Hashim, a 20-year-old student of Early Childhood Education at Keningau Vocational College (KVC), is one of the 50 finalists for the Global Student Prize 2025, which offers a total prize of USD100,000 (RM400,000) to one winner.
The award, sponsored by the UK-based Varkey Foundation and Chegg.org, is considered the most prestigious student award in the world.
In 2025, the award received 11,000 nominations, and Hanisah is the only Malaysian to qualify as a finalist for this award.
This list of 50 nominees was announced officially on social media and website of Varkey Foundation on July 17.
Hanisah was selected as a finalist for her achievements, contributions and impact on other students and within the education community.
She is the founder of a social enterprise called Mearpet, which recycles used clothing and stuffed toys into puppets used to educate and entertain children.
This project has won numerous awards both locally and internationally, including RM3,000 in prize money through the Pitchbah competition organized by the OOZE youth club in 2023, as well as the YouthMADE Festival Amplify Grant from the US-based Digital Promise in 2025.
It was also featured on the DidikTV KPM television channel in early 2025.
Hanisah has organized social enterprise workshops and competitions at the college, which have inspired many students to develop their own social projects such as sign language tutoring classes, food waste reduction campaigns, and toy innovations made from recycled materials.
These students have won several competitions, including the Social Project Challenge hosted by myHarapan and Yayasan Telekom Malaysia. Hanisah is also an outstanding academic achiever, consistently receiving the Best Student Award every year. She is also the former vice president of the college's student council.
Other than the Mearpet project, she has also initiated a Malaysian University English Test (MUET) for vocational college students who plan to pursue tertiary education as well as led a virtual internationalization learning session that connects students and teachers from different countries.
The college director, Lumang anak Lang, expressed pride in Hanisah's achievement, stating that this success is proof that vocational colleges under the Malaysian Ministry of Education are capable and committed to producing skilled, competent, ambitious students who contribute to society.

Bursa poised for gains on US tariff cut, 13MP rollout

KUALA LUMPUR: A cut in United States import duties on Malaysian goods and the pragmatic rollout of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) could inject fresh momentum into Bursa Malaysia in the coming months, analysts said. They expect the tariff reduction from 25 per cent to 19 per cent to ease cost pressures on a large share of Malaysian exports, improving margins and lifting sentiment, especially as the rate undercuts China's 25 per cent and Vietnam's 20 per cent. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said the tariffs reduction could ease cost pressures on roughly 40 per cent of Malaysia's US$26 billion worth of exports to the US. This is particularly in electrical and electronics, rubber-based goods, furniture and machinery, which together account for more than 55 per cent of shipments. He said these sectors could see margin relief of between 10 per cent and 15 per cent, similar to the equity uplift experienced by the Philippines earlier this year after comparable tariff concessions. "US exemptions for semiconductors and pharmaceuticals safeguard Malaysia's high-value exports, preserving its position in global manufacturing networks and supporting earnings visibility for listed corporates," Sedek told Business Times. While US President Donald Trump recently threatened a 100 per cent tariff on semiconductor imports with exemptions for firms investing in US manufacturing, Sedek said the immediate impact on Malaysia is expected to be minimal. However, he cautioned that the sector may face supply chain recalibration if the tariff is implemented across major manufacturing hubs. Sedek said 13MP — with an RM611 billion expenditure framework for 2026–2030 — prioritises digitalisation, AI adoption, renewable energy and industrial upgrading. Major projects include Nvidia's RM10 billion AI facility and large-scale solar initiatives, which Sedek said could attract private investment and spur productivity gains. "Infrastructure and digitalisation efforts such as the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone and the GovTech transformation agenda will also drive structural improvements, echoing efficiency gains seen in Estonia's digitalisation push," he added. Given these tailwinds, Sedek projects the FTSE Bursa Malaysia (FBM KLCI) to trade between 1,570 and 1,585 in the coming months, keeping it on track for a year-end target of 1,650. However, he cautioned that global monetary tightening, geopolitical risks and commodity price volatility may temper gains. "Capital flows and exchange rate stability will remain critical to sustaining momentum. Policy agility and disciplined execution will be essential in translating these short-term catalysts into a durable re-rating of Malaysia's equity market," he added. Looking ahead, Sedek said the FBM KLCI may face several downside risks such as export sensitivity to global uncertainties. This includes the possibility of US tariffs cutting electronics and furniture export revenues by up to US$2 billion annually, even as Malaysia retains competitiveness over China. "Domestically, implementation inefficiencies in 13MP, such as bureaucratic delays, may undermine investor confidence in the RM611 billion investment plan," Sedek said. Apart from the lower tariff and 13MP rollout, Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) Research said sentiment is also supported by rising odds of a US Federal Reserve rate cut as early as September. However, August could see guarded trading amid persistent foreign net outflows totalling RM14.21 billion year-to-date — the largest since the RM24.6 billion recorded during the pandemic-hit year of 2020. HLIB analyst Ng Jun Sheng said other headwinds include possible new US tariffs of up to 250 per cent on pharmaceutical products and up to 100 per cent on chips built outside the US. Sentiment may also be weighed by expectations of a subdued August earnings season and the index's historical seasonal weakness, with average returns over the past 10, 20 and 30 years at 0.7, 1.2 and 2.2 per cent, respectively. "On the domestic front, concerns surrounding subsidy rationalisation and a potential Sales and Service Tax expansion could further dampen consumer sentiment and cloud corporate earnings visibility," he said. The FBM KLCI staged a strong rebound from an eight-week low of 1,488.90 to close at 1,557 last Friday, marking its fourth straight gain and surging 23.6 points from the previous week. The gains were supported by easing US-Malaysia tariff tensions, a pragmatic 13MP rollout and supportive technical signals. Despite this, HLIB Research said underlying sentiment remained cautious, with market breadth still weak at 0.83 compared to 0.82 previously. Turnover stood at 2.43 billion shares worth RM2.72 billion. This came amid persistent foreign outflows for an 11th consecutive session, valued at RM1.13 billion last week, mostly in the financial services, healthcare and utilities sectors. Local institutions remained net buyers at RM1.03 billion, while local retailers bought RM105.5 million in equities. Average daily trading volume fell across the board, with foreign investors and local retailers down 6.6 per cent and 6.1 per cent, respectively, while local institutions recorded a 4.8 per cent increase.

Perplexity AI offers US$34.5bil for Google Chrome

SAN FRANCISCO: Perplexity AI offered Google on Tuesday US$34.5 billion for its popular Chrome web browser, which the internet giant could potentially be forced to sell as part of antitrust proceedings. The whopping sum proposed in a letter of intent by Perplexity is nearly double the value of the startup, which was reportedly US$18 billion in a recent funding round. "This proposal is designed to satisfy an antitrust remedy in highest public interest by placing Chrome with a capable, independent operator focused on continuity, openness, and consumer protection," Perplexity chief executive Aravind Srinivas said in the letter, a copy of which was seen by AFP. Google is awaiting US District Court Judge Amit Mehta's ruling on what "remedies" to impose, following a landmark decision last year that said the tech titan maintained an illegal monopoly in online search. US government attorneys have called for Google to divest itself of the Chrome browser, contending that artificial intelligence is poised to ramp up the tech giant's dominance as the go-to window into the internet. Google has urged Mehta to reject the divestment, and his decision is expected by the end of the month. Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Perplexity's offer vastly undervalues Chrome and "should not be taken seriously," Baird Equity Research analysts said in a note to investors. Given that Perplexity already has a browser that competes with Chrome, the San Francisco-based startup could be trying to spark others to bid or "influence the pending decision" in the antitrust case, Baird analysts theorised. "Either way, we believe Perplexity would view an independent Chrome – or one no longer affiliated with Google – as an advantage as it attempts to take browser share," Baird analysts told investors. Google contends that the United States has gone way beyond the scope of the suit by recommending a spinoff of Chrome, and holding open the option to force a sale of its Android mobile operating system. "Forcing the sale of Chrome or banning default agreements wouldn't foster competition," said Cato Institute senior fellow in technology policy Jennifer Huddleston. "It would hobble innovation, hurt smaller players, and leave users with worse products." Google attorney John Schmidtlein noted in court that more than 80 per cent of Chrome users are outside the United States, meaning divestiture would have global ramifications. "Any divested Chrome would be a shadow of the current Chrome," he contended. "And once we are in that world, I don't see how you can say anybody is better off." The potential of Chrome being weakened or spun off comes as rivals such as Microsoft, ChatGPT and Perplexity put generative artificial intelligence (AI) to work fetching information from the internet in response to user queries. Google is among the tech companies investing heavily to be a leader in AI, and is weaving the technology into search and other online offerings.--AFP

Red Bull buy English rugby strugglers Newcastle

LONDON: Red Bull further extended their interests in sport on Tuesday by investing in rugby union for the first time by taking over English top-flight strugglers Newcastle. The Austria-based energy drinks company already has significant interests in football, motor racing and winter sports. The club will now be known as Newcastle Red Bulls. Oliver Mintzlaff, Red Bull CEO corporate projects and investments, said their aim was to 'empower the club to reach its full competitive potential'. They face an uphill task as they take over a club that has failed to sparkle in recent years, finishing bottom in the past three Premiership campaigns. Semore Kurdi, who had been majority owner since 2011, put Newcastle up for sale towards the end of last year. 'Red Bull's takeover of Newcastle is a landmark moment for our sport and a powerful endorsement of our vision and strategy for the future of the PREM,' PREM chief executive Simon Massie-Taylor said in a statement, using the new name for the rebranded Premiership. 'We are hugely excited by Red Bull's ambition for the club, which includes developing the player pathway in the North East and growing the club's fanbase,' he added. He said Red Bull's 'track record in global sport' would bring 'enormous value not only to Newcastle but to the PREM as a whole'. There will be no upheavals at the top with the vastly-experienced Steve Diamond remaining the club's director of rugby. The Newcastle players will get a chance to show their qualities to their new owners when they get their season underway with a home match against six-time champions Saracens on September 26. But while Red Bull have won six Formula One constructors' championships and eight drivers' world titles, Diamond warned the new regime would take time to make its presence felt at Newcastle -- although it would deliver success. 'We'll be looking at world-class facilities, world-class players, world-class coaches coming to Newcastle over the next three or four years to hopefully dominate in the future,' Diamond told a conference call. He added: 'The situation has happened at a difficult time for recruiting, so the main job I've been doing for the last four weeks is getting my ducks in a row to have a competitive team for September.' Diamond, however, is in no doubt of the importance of Red Bull's investment given Newcastle's nearest rival Premiership club is Sale, more than 100 miles away. 'It future-proofs the professional game in the North East and the north,' he said. - AFP
