Blue-chip WR Vance Spafford picks Miami, decommits from Georgia

Miami Herald9 hours ago

Wide receiver prospect Vance Spafford shifted his commitment on Monday from Georgia to Florida.
Spafford, from Mission Viejo, Calif., told 247Sports that he made the move, in part, because he is looking for a chance to play on a team that works together as one unit.
'The football team is made up of the best of the best,' Spafford said in the 247 Sports interview.
At Florida, he will play with quarterback Carson Beck, a transfer from Georgia.
'When I went on my visit there earlier this season, I just noticed how amazing their offensive line was, how much time Carson Beck had to throw, so why not join a team that is going to throw the ball like that? The program will always attract the best players, and it's got a winning culture, so that's something that really was hard to turn down for me,' Spafford said.
The 247sports composite lists Spafford as the No. 9 wideout in the nation and the No. 74 overall player in the 2026 class.
He made five official visits since May 30: Southern California, UCLA, Washington, Miami and Georgia. He initially committed to the Bulldogs last November.
The Hurricanes are heading into their fourth season with Mario Cristobal at head coach. His three-year record is 22-16.
Miami, which finished 10-3 (6-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) last season, begins the 2025 campaign against visiting Notre Dame on Aug. 31.

Spafford is ranked as the No. 124 overall prospect, No. 12 wide receiver, and No. 17 overall recruit in California by 247Sports. At the ESPN Future 50 event last July, Spafford won the fastest man competition, running a 4.35-second 40-yard dash.
Below is the 247Sports Scouting Report on Spafford from May 28, written by 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Greg Biggins.
'Gifted wide out and has some rare traits that should allow him to be a dominant player at the next level. Elite as a route runner and looks like a college player already in his ability to turn a defender and get separation. Extremely quick and explosive off the line and has the down field speed to separate. Runs well after the catch and shows the ability to make multiple defenders miss in the open field. Not a big receiver at a shade under 5-foot-11 but has a strong upper body and can easily beat press coverage and is tough to bring down one on one. Wins 50-50 and contested catches and shows advanced ball awareness. Explodes getting in and out of his breaks and should offer value as a punt and kick returner as well. Highly instinctive football player combining polish and explosive big play ability. A fun prospect to track over the coming years and has the skill set to play on Sunday's.'

Inter Miami blows chance to win FIFA Club World Cup group, sets up showdown with Lionel Messi's old team

Paulinho scored in the 80th minute, Mauricio leveled in the 87th minute and Palmeiras rallied to a 2-2 draw against Inter Miami on Monday night in Miami Gardens, Fla., and clinched the top spot in Group A. The Brazilians' late rally canceled out a brilliant individual performance from Luis Suarez, who scored a goal that echoed the peak of his long career and contributed a clever assist for Miami. Tadeo Allende also scored for the Herons, who still advanced to the round of 16 at the FIFA Club World Cup after a second-place finish. 3 Mauricio celebrates after scoring during the Palmeiras-Inter Miami match on June 23, 2025. Lionel Messi and Miami will play Messi's former club, Paris Saint-Germain, on Saturday in Atlanta. Paulinho cut Palmeiras' deficit in half after he ran onto Allan's clever diagonal ball into the area, then finished into the bottom left corner just ahead of Benjamin Cremaschi's challenge. Seven minutes later, Mauricio hammered in an emphatic finish low with his first touch after he was first to Marcelo Weigandt's headed partial clearance. Now 38 years old, Suarez looked at least 10 years younger when he doubled Miami's lead in the 65th minute. 3 Lionel Messi reacts at the end of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Group A football match between US Inter Miami and Brazil's Palmeiras at the Hard Rock stadium in Miami on June 23, 2025. Although Fuchs poked the ball with an outstretched heel, Suarez kept possession, sorted his feed, then powered a ferocious half volley that sailed past Weverton into the near top corner. Allende put Miami in front in the 16th minute on one of the most direct goals of the tournament. Federico Redondo cleared the ball from his own penalty area, and Suarez made a retreating run from the center circle to meet the clearance. 3 Luiz Suarez celebrates after scoring during the Inter Miami-Palmeiras match on June 23, 2025. And with Palmeiras defender Murilo appearing to suffer a hamstring strain while on the chase, Allende had plenty of time on the break to compose himself before driving a crisp, low finish past Weverton.

Palmeiras ties Inter Miami 2-2, both teams advance to Club World Cup round of 16

Palmeiras came from behind to play Inter Miami to a 2-2 draw in front of an electric crowd at Hard Rock Stadium, and both clubs advanced to the Club World Cup round of 16 on Monday night. A tie was enough to send both teams to the knockout round after they entered Monday's match tied atop the Group A standings with four points apiece. For a while, it looked like Inter Miami would advance as winners of the group after taking a 2-0 lead deep into regulation on goals by Tadeo Allende in the 16th and veteran Luis Suarez in the 65th. The historic Brazilian club Palmeiras clawed back, with a goal from Paulinho in the 80th and then the equalizer from Mauricio a couple minutes before the end of regulation. Messi, who turns 39 on Tuesday, had numerous chances but did not score Monday despite the crowd chanting his name throughout the match. Messi was seen shaking his head just after Mauricio hammered the tying goal past goalkeeper Oscar Ustari in the 87th minute, as Miami's lead had slipped away in a matter of minutes. Palmeiras finished as winners of Group A and will face fellow Brazilian squad Botafogo in the round of 16, while Inter Miami will face Group B winner and Messi's former club Paris Saint-Germain.
