
Airports 2030: Morocco Launches $2.8 Billion Aviation Program
Doha – Morocco has launched a MAD 28 billion ($2.8 billion) investment program as part of its 'Airports 2030' vision, aiming to more than double passenger capacity to 80 million by 2030, Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh announced on Monday in Rabat.
The ambitious plan includes the construction of a new Casablanca airport on 800 hectares adjacent to the existing Mohammed V Airport. The new facility will single-handedly accommodate 40 million passengers and connect Morocco with long-haul destinations requiring over 8 hours of flight time.
'This program consists primarily of building a new airport in Casablanca, following Royal directives, to serve as a gateway between Morocco and other countries around the world, particularly distant destinations,' Kayouh told the Chamber of Representatives during a question session.
The new Casablanca airport will be integrated with high-speed rail connections, allowing travelers to reach Marrakech in 50 minutes and Tanger in 90 minutes. These enhancements align with plans to double Royal Air Maroc's fleet from 50 to 100 aircraft by 2030.
Beyond Casablanca, several regional airports will undergo major expansion. The Rabat-Salé Airport will increase capacity to 4 million passengers, the Fez Airport to 5 million, and the Sania Ramel Airport to 2 million.
Moroccan airports handled over 34 million passengers in 2024, a figure expected to more than double under the 2030 vision. The plan prioritizes airports in FIFA World Cup 2030 host cities – Casablanca, Rabat, Tanger, Marrakech, and Agadir – but will extend to neighboring areas to promote economic development and social cohesion.
'These expansion efforts will not be limited to World Cup host cities but will include neighboring towns to achieve economic development and socio-economic cohesion,' Kayouh said.
The minister detailed several measures already implemented to improve passenger experience, including the elimination of scanners and reduction of airport transit times to under 25 minutes. Future enhancements will incorporate electronic gates and biometric passports.
Nationwide transport upgrade
On the rail front, Kayouh revealed that the National Office of Railways (ONCF) is advancing studies for the Marrakech-Agadir high-speed line, expected to be completed within three months.
Land acquisition has already begun, securing 8 km at Marrakech's exit and over 60 hectares near Agadir's Adrar stadium. The Marrakech-Casablanca high-speed segment is scheduled for completion by 2029, while an extension to Essaouira is under consideration.
In 2024, Moroccan railways transported 56 million passengers, predominantly via the Al Boraq high-speed train.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has welcomed Morocco's aviation strategy, noting the sector's important economic impact. According to IATA's 'Value of Air Transport to Morocco' report from last month, aviation contributes MAD 112 billion ($11.2 billion) to GDP and supports 856,000 jobs, representing 7.9% of the country's economy.
'Given the critical and growing importance of aviation to Morocco's economy, the launch of the 'Airports 2030 Strategy' will have a far-reaching and positive impact on Morocco's economic and social development,' said Kamil Al-Awadhi, IATA Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East.
IATA's report indicates that Morocco's international air connectivity has increased by 36% within Africa and 63% with other regions since 2014. The country now operates 18 airports with commercial scheduled flights connecting to 54 countries through direct routes.
The aviation sector directly employs 38,000 people in Morocco, generating MAD 11 billion ($1.1 billion) in economic output. Tourism supported by aviation makes the largest contribution, adding MAD 85 billion ($8.5 billion) to GDP and employing 681,600 people.
IATA has recommended three key priorities to maximize Morocco's airport investments: ensuring cost-efficient charges and fees, building human resource capacity alongside infrastructure development, and implementing smart consumer regulations that reflect global best practices.
'It is no coincidence that the 'Airports 2030 Strategy' aligns with Morocco being a co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Morocco will be on the world stage, which is a great incentive to be ready to show off Morocco's growing strength as an aviation hub linking Africa, Europe, and North America,' Al-Awadhi noted.

Rabat – Morocco aims to build on its strengthened automotive approach to increase its electric vehicle production capacity by 53%. Morocco's Minister of Industry, Ryad Mezzour, announced the news on Tuesday, noting that the country's goal is to increase production to reach 107,000 electric vehicles by the end of 2025. The minister said that Morocco's automotive production stands at 700,000 vehicles. By the end of the year, Morocco is expected to produce one million vehicles. The automotive sector is a key industry for Morocco's economic growth. According to data from the Moroccan Ministry of Industry, the sector is Morocco's first exporting industry. Between 2014 and 2018, the sector created at least 116,000 jobs. Morocco is also the first automotive manufacturer in Africa. Data from 2019 shows that job integration from the sector reached over 220,000 opportunities, as well as the presence of 250 companies involved in the sector. 'Strategic sector in the national industrial policy, since the 2000s, the automotive industry has released a two-digit annual growth towards the creation of employment and export,' the ministry said. Several renowned foreign groups have established production facilities in Morocco, including Renault, Peugeot, Yazaki, and many others. Most recently, the Moroccan Exchange Office reported that the Moroccan automotive sector's exports totaled MAD 49 billion ( $5.4 billion) as of April. The number shows a slight decrease of MAD 3.67 billion ($399 million) or -7.0% year-on-year. Exports from the vehicle construction segment totaled MAD 17.84 billion ($1.9 billion), compared to MAD 22.884 billion a year earlier. Exports of exterior vehicle components reached MAD 1.172 billion, down from MAD 1.30 billion, showing a drop of MAD 121 million or -10.1%. As for interior vehicle components and seats, they increased in exports, rising to MAD 3.34 billion, or 10.3%. Automotive wiring exports also increased to reach MAD 18.93 billion, representing a 1.7% increase. Despite the boom, Morocco's automotive sector is facing challenges, including the EU's recent decision to impose countervailing duties on Morocco. In March, the European Commission released a statement announcing the news of imposing countervailing duties on imports of aluminum road wheels from Morocco. The commission claimed that this decision aims to shield EU producers and defend 16,600 jobs from 'unfair trading practices.' The decision came as Morocco continues to boost its global position in industrial sectors. Morocco responded to the commission's decision, noting that the Moroccan government was studying all possibilities to take 'any measures it deems appropriate to address these issues.' The government stressed that the partnership between Morocco and the EU is global, warning that this partnership 'cannot be subject to a selective logic or to tailored treatment.' French-Moroccan arrested in Tangier for international crypto kidnapping and money laundering

The 25-year-old suspect was arrested in Tangier as part of international security cooperation, following a formal request from French authorities outlining alleged crimes committed on French soil, according to a statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN). Searches connected to the case led to the seizure of several bladed weapons, including swords and knives, along with dozens of mobile phones and communication devices, which are currently being analyzed for digital evidence. A sum of money suspected to be tied to the suspect's criminal activities was also found. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by French judicial authorities. He is accused of participating in violent kidnappings, extortion targeting cryptocurrency users, and laundering proceeds from these crimes. He has been placed in custody as part of the ongoing judicial investigation led by the BNPJ under the supervision of the public prosecutor. Given his Moroccan nationality, the legal process will follow national laws while addressing the French complaint.

Operation Marhaba 2025: 29 Ships Prepare for 3.5 Million Travelers
Doha – Morocco has finalized preparations for Operation Marhaba 2025, focusing on four key priorities: traffic flow management, strengthened security, proximity support, and enhanced health vigilance. Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita outlined these measures during a weekly oral questions session at the House of Councilors on Tuesday. The maritime component will feature 29 vessels from seven shipping companies operating 12 routes from ports in Italy, France, and Spain. Approximately MAD 28 million ($2.8 million) has been allocated to improve reception infrastructure at the Tanger-Med port. This year's operation anticipates an exceptional influx of approximately 3.5 million travelers, mainly Moroccans residing in Europe, representing a 4% increase from previous years. An estimated 890,000 vehicles are expected to cross the strait this summer, marking a 5% increase. This rise may be linked to the Spanish government's regularization program, allowing thousands of migrants to normalize their status and travel. The operation will feature over 12,000 maritime crossings—an 84% increase compared to 2004. 'Security and safety will be reinforced through enhanced border control mechanisms,' Bourita said. The operation will deploy 24 reception centers—18 within Morocco and six abroad—along with additional human resources in accordance with royal instructions. Notably, Moroccans aged 60 and above who have lived abroad for at least ten years can now benefit from a 90% reduction on the value of imported vehicles. Provincial and Prefectural Customs Directors can now validate applications based on authenticated documents, including residence certificates, foreign ID cards with overseas addresses, or consular registration cards. The administration has also simplified procedures for returning expatriates, who can benefit from a three-year aging allowance on their vehicle's age, limited to one vehicle per person and once in a lifetime. Previously required two-year pay slips for employees or tax declarations for merchants are no longer necessary. In Ceuta, authorities have launched a mobile application called 'Embolsamiento Ceuta' to manage traffic flow toward Morocco. Available in Spanish, French, and English, the app provides real-time estimates of waiting times at the Tarajal border crossing. Users receive a digital ticket with a QR code required for entry and exit from the regulation area, with paper tickets available for those without smartphones. Ceuta has also increased staffing with up to ten agents daily working in three shifts. Infrastructure improvements include more shaded areas and new drinking water points.
