Coffee by the bucket is the summer's wildest caffeine trend

Fast Company4 days ago
A Trenta Starbucks is no longer cutting it. The latest coffee trend has people ordering their iced lattes by the bucket.
Earlier this year, independent coffee shops started going viral on TikTok for serving 34-ounce iced lattes in plastic buckets. 'POV: You live in the same era as coffee buckets,' one coffee shop posted on TikTok. 'Ok well see you soon I guess,' one person commented. 'I'd be on the toilet for days,' another wrote.
While it's unclear where the trend originated, coffee shops in Colorado, Ohio, Massachusetts, and Connecticut have since begun offering their own versions of the quadruple-shot beverage. The New York Times spoke to Dulce Vida, a Mexican-inspired coffee shop in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where a 'La Cubeta,' priced at $14 with add-ons, now accounts for more than 30% of orders since it debuted last month.
TJ's Burritos, a Connecticut-based casual coffeehouse and Mexican restaurant, started serving coffee by the bucket in late May; it sold out during the first weekend. Now TJ's Burritos sells at least 1,000 buckets per week (sometimes 200 buckets per day!), owner Tricia Martin told CT Insider.
Alaina Roberto, owner of Monroe's Last Drop Coffee Shop, dropped her version of the viral coffee bucket in late June. 'It seems like it's a thing right now,' Roberto told CT Insider. 'It's a bucket summer.'
Of course, like everything else, coffee trends come and go. Earlier this year, cloud coffee (a twist on an Americano made with coconut water) had its viral moment. Then who could forget the dalgona coffee trend that had TikTok in a choke hold back in 2020.
While the novelty of drinking your morning cup of coffee from a plastic bucket is likely driving the trend, Snaxshot 's Andrea Hernández suggests it may be reflective of a broader shift in attitudes toward caffeine. 'We're kind of experiencing that sort of backlash from what we were trying to do, like, less caffeine, more mindfulness, more meditation, less palpitations,' she told The Times.
Rather than paying attention to wellness gurus who claim coffee first thing in the morning disrupts cortisol levels, or giving in to Big Matcha, the pendulum has swung back to mainlining caffeine by the bucketload.
Also, considering a regular-size oat cap is pushing $10 with tip, $12 for 34 ounces of latte is arguably a great deal.

Mass.-based burger chain to shut down more than two-thirds of its locations

It looks like Wahlbugers is hitting a wall. The nationwide burger chain, founded in Hingham by brothers Mark, Paul and Donnie Wahlberg, will close more than two-third of its locations, according to a report from Food Republic. The 79 locations that are shuttering belong to franchisee Hy-Vee Inc., a Midwestern supermarket chain that incorporated Wahlburgers kiosks in many of its stores as a replacement for its prior in-house dining option, Market Grille. Now, the chain plans to reintroduce Market Grille to its stores, according to Restaurant Business. The company's 2018 franchising deal with Hy-Vee was a significant component of its expansion. However, Wahlburgers CEO Randy Sharpe doesn't seem concerned about the development, as Hy-Vee comprised only a small portion of sales, according to Restaurant Business. 'We are growing restaurants,' Sharpe said in Restaurant Business' report. 'We're not going to be in the grocery business.' 'It's best that everyone stay in what their skill sets are and move on,' he added. The closures leave 34 locations, according to Food Republic, six of which are in Massachusetts: three in Boston (two within Boston Logan International Airport and one in the Fenway neighborhood), and one location each in Springfield, Plainville and Hingham. Outside of the United States, Wahlburgers has locations in Canada, New Zealand and Australia. The Wahlberg brothers founded Wahlburgers in 2011, and didn't expand to a second location – Toronto – until 2014. That same year, the family launched the reality TV program 'Wahlbugers,' which aired through 2019 and earned an Emmy nomination for 'Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program.' Here's What Trump's New Tax Law Means for Your Deductions and Donations

The massive piece of legislation known as the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' comes with many changes to tax policy. While you may be aware Trump's 2017 tax cuts are extended, you may not know about the impact on deductions and donations. Read More: Learn More: Here are some things to know before you adjust your plans, according to some financial experts. Impact on Charitable Giving As noted by CNBC, the new deductions are designed to encourage everyday people to give more. The bill's deduction for those who don't itemize 'has the potential to re-motivate charitable giving among a significant number of households,' per the Akron Community Foundation. However, one of the important takeaways from the new law is that it has an exemption rule for the wealthy and limits for high earners. According to CNBC, the law could disincentivize charitable giving for high earners, as it limited deductions for those in the top tax bracket. 'Business and real estate deductions are dependent on the type of expenses,' said Schuyler M. Moore, partner at Greenberg Glusker. 'For donations, they are no longer deductible for the first amount up to 0.5% of the taxpayer's income.' 'Plus, those in the 37% bracket are now limited to a 35% deduction value cap, reducing the overall benefit of giving. Bottom line — the tax advantages are still there, but you'll need a more intentional, high-leverage strategy to access them,' said Christopher Stroup, founder and president of Silicon Beach Financial. Check Out: Impacts on Deductions According to Stroup, itemizing may no longer make sense in many cases. 'It makes the increased standard deduction permanent and introduces new below-the-line deductions, making itemizing less common,' Stroup said. The standard deduction under the new law is $15,750 for single filers and $31,500 for those filing jointly, per the Tax Foundation. 'The more generous standard deduction improves tax simplicity by reducing the number of taxpayers who benefit from itemizing over taking the standard deduction,' it said. Opportunity for Planning According to Stroup, this law rewards proactive planning. 'For high-income earners and charitably inclined households, tools like donor-advised funds, qualified charitable distributions and even revisiting gift and estate strategies — with the new $15 million exclusion — are essential,' Stroup said. 'With itemized deduction limits, adjusted gross income floors and phaseouts reshaping the landscape, a one-size-fits-all approach no longer works as coordination between your tax and financial plan is now critical.'
