‘Awareness of PCPNDT Act key to reducing female foeticide'

He said awareness among public and health staff about the Act is key to reducing female foeticide and improving sex ratio at birth.
Experts highlighted the legal provisions and their importance in preventing prevalence of quackery as well.
The workshop was part of an initiative announced in the assembly by the health minister Ma Subramanian to create awareness and educate health department staff on PCPNDT Act and bring down female foeticide. On the discreet or symbolic methods being used by scan centres to reveal the sex of unborn foetus, the DMS said practising doctors can face punishments in case of violations even if the patient was willing.
Dr K Senthil, state president, TNGDA, elaborated on Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act as well. Dr R Selvaraj, JDHS, Madurai, Dr L Arul Sundaresh Kumar, dean, Madurai Medical College, and officials and staff from Dindigul, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Sivanganga, and Virudhunagar districts were present. A handbook on PCPNDT Act was released and distributed to all participants.

2 hosps barred from organ transplant
Trichy: Two private hospitals — one in Trichy and another in Perambalur — have been temporarily barred from carrying out organ transplant surgeries following an ongoing investigation into illegal kidney transplants. The action follows a preliminary inquiry by a high-level committee into an alleged kidney sale racket operating out of Pallipalayam in Namakkal district. The special investigation team led by S Vineeth, director, Tamil Nadu health systems project, submitted a preliminary report to the govt highlighting violations of the Human Organ Transplantation Act, 1994. Based on the findings, the director of medical and rural welfare issued an order suspending the licences of both hospitals under Section 16(2) of the Act, citing public interest, said an official release.

Kidney transplant licenses of two private hospitals suspended
The Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services (DMS) has suspended the kidney transplant licence of Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Medical College and Hospital, Perambalur, and Cethar Hospital, Tiruchi, in connection with an alleged kidney sale racket in Namakkal. In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Health Department said that following reports of illegal kidney transplants, S. Vineeth, project director of Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project, was ordered to conduct an inquiry and submit a report. Following this, Dr. Vineeth, along with R.M. Meenakshi Sundari, joint director, DMS, Chennai; A. Rajmohan, joint director of medical and rural health services, Namakkal; K. Marimuthu, joint director of medical and rural health services, Perambalur and Ariyalur; and Seetharaman, Deputy Superintendent of Police, conducted an inquiry at the two hospitals and the affected areas. Dr. Vineeth submitted a preliminary report to the government, based on which the DMS had ordered the suspension of the kidney transplant licence of the two hospitals under Section 16 (2) of the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994, keeping in mind the welfare of the public, the release said.

Haryana's sex ratio improves to 917 amid crackdown on illegal abortions
Chandigarh: Haryana's sex ratio at birth (SRB) has improved to 917 this week, thanks to the special task force (STF) intensifying reverse tracking of medical termination of pregnancies (MTPs) under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign. The STF is led by additional chief secretary (health) Sudhir Rajpal and the operations are being supervised by health and family welfare minister Arti Singh Rao. The progress was shared during a meeting of the STF, where Rajpal attributed the improvement to intensified field efforts, particularly the reverse tracking of MTPs. So far, 690 reverse trackings have been completed across the state, with the highest number reported from Ambala. These investigations have led to the registration of 18 FIRs in suspected cases of illegal abortions and sex-selective practices, with 13 more FIRs currently in process. Rajpal appreciated the hard work of the field force and directed strict action against officials whose negligence led to lapses in reverse tracking or failed attempts to trap illegal MTPs and sex determination operations.
