Woman who died in quarantine tests negative for Nipah
Health Minister Veena George said that 498 people in the State were on the Nipah contact list. She said prevention activities should continue until September as per the Nipah calendar.
When 203 people are under observation in Malappuram, 116 are under observation in Kozhikode, 177 in Palakkad, and two in Ernakulam. Eleven of them are under treatment in Malappuram, with two in intensive care units. As many as 46 persons on the contact list in Malappuram have tested negative for Nipah so far.
In Palakkad, three persons are being treated in isolation. Five tests in Palakkad have been negative so far. The Minister said that 29 persons in the State were in highest risk category and 116 in high risk category. The Nipah-infected woman is under treatment in Kozhikode.
Meanwhile, a Central medical team on Wednesday visited Malappuram and Palakkad districts to coordinate the virus prevention efforts. The national joint outbreak response team appointed by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will give a report to the Centre. The Central team is led by Pranay Verma, joint director at the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). The team includes experts from the National Institute of Virology, Pune, scientists, veterinary consultants and animal husbandry experts.

Centre okays AI-based diabetic retinopathy screening in Raj
Jaipur: The Centre has approved Rajasthan's project to screen for diabetic retinopathy (DR), a serious eye condition caused by diabetes that can lead to vision loss. The initiative aims to identify early signs of retinal damage and provide timely treatment to prevent complications. In July, the state health department launched MadhuNetr DR-AI, an artificial intelligence-based system for DR screening using fundus cameras. Fundus photography helps in documenting retinopathy and counselling patients by visually demonstrating the impact of the disease. "We started MadhuNetr DR-AI considering the rising burden of diabetes. Retinopathy is a major complication and can cause irreversible vision damage," said Dr. Sunil Singh, State Nodal Officer for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). The AI system enables early detection by grading the severity of retinopathy. Based on the results, patients are referred to ophthalmologists for further treatment. Initially, the screening was launched in five locations- Pali, Jalore, Deshnok (Bikaner), Karauli, and Beawar, where fundus cameras were already available. The health department is prioritising NCD prevention due to high prevalence rates. In May, it reported that 20% of the population above 30 years in the state suffers from diabetes, hypertension, or both—equating to 370 out of every 1,850 people in that age group. The department said 37% of the state's population is above the age of 30 years.

One more Nipah case in Kerala as patient dies at Perinthalmanna hospital
One more Nipah case was reported in the State on Saturday when a 58-year-old man who died at a private hospital at Perinthalmanna in the evening tested positive for the deadly virus in the initial tests. The man hailing from Kumaramputhur, near Mannarkkad, in Palakkad district was under treatment at the hospital for fever-related ailments. His sample was sent for testing as he reportedly showed symptoms of Nipah, including acute mental disorientation The initial tests conducted at the virology laboratory at the Government Medical College Hospital, Manjeri, proved positive for Nipah on Saturday night. However, the final confirmation has to come from the National Institute of Virology, Pune. The fresh Nipah case has come at a time when the health authorities had started relaxing the restrictions imposed in the wake of two Nipah cases reported in Palakkad and Malappuram districts. Six wards in Thachanattukara and Karimpuzha panchayats in Palakkad district and 20 wards in Kuruva, Makkaraparamba and Mankada panchayats in Malappuram district had been declared containment zones. However, the restrictions were lifted in Malappuram on Thursday and Palakkad on Friday. Following the new Nipah case at Kumaramputhur, health officials in Palakkad and Malappuram are racing to track down everyone who came into contact with the victim in recent weeks.
