We will make BJP chant ‘Joy Bangla' after 2026: Abhishek Banerjee at Trinamool Martyr's Day rally
Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee gave a call from the party's annual Shahid Dibas (Martyr's Day) celebration on July 21 and said that he will force the Bharatiya Janta Party to chant 'Joy Bangla' after the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections.
Speaking to a massive crowd at the heart of Kolkata, party second-in-command, Mr Banerjee said that the BJP will not cross 50 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Setting the election strategy and narrative tone of the party for the upcoming elections, the TMC leader said that if BJP is trying to put Bengali people speaking people in detention camps, they will go a step further and democratically put BJP in a detention camp by making them lose the elections.
'BJP used to say Jay Shri Ram earlier but now they are saying Joy Maa Kali, Joy Maa Durga. Mark my words today—in just 10 months, I will make them say Joy Bangla after 2026 elections,' Mr Banerjee said.
He also added that in the 2021 elections they had said 'Khela hobe' (Game on) but for the 2026 elections they are saying 'Poddo phool upre fela hobe' [Will rip out the lotus flower – referring to the BJP party symbol].
Putting emphasis on his party's inclusive ideology, Mr Banerjee said, 'We don't do politics of religion or hatred. We maintain our religion at home, but in politics we have only one religion—humanity, to serve the people.' He accused that the Assam's BJP-led Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has labelled Bengali-speaking people as Bangladeshis, however, the BJP government has not taken any action against his 'discriminatory comments'.
'Chant Joy Bangla so loudly that the echoes of the slogans reach up to Delhi,' Mr Banerjee said as supporters at the Martyr's Day rally cheered on.
Mr Banerjee also accused that the Union Government is using the State machinery under its power to strip the voters and opposition of their basic rights. 'On one hand, BJP uses ED to suppress the Opposition leaders and on the other, they use EC to snatch away the voting rights of the people. There are two Es — Election Commission and Enforcement Directorate. They are using these two Es to put Opposition leaders behind bars and take away the voting rights of Opposition voters and normal voters of the country,' Mr Banerjee said.

Shivakumar flays BJP over GST notices, urges withdrawal
Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has strongly criticised the BJP for issuing GST notices to small traders, saying, 'The BJP is trying to rub the banana peel on our nose after eating the banana themselves.' He made these remarks while speaking to the media near his residence in Sadashivanagar on Monday. Responding to the PIL filed regarding the formation of five new municipal corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), he said, 'Anyone can raise objections – that's their right. If there are any mistakes, we'll rectify them. The government is committed to forming five municipal corporations in Bengaluru. We have already discussed the matter with BJP leaders and formed a Joint Legislative Committee. People can continue to submit their objections if they wish, but many are doing it for political reasons. We are doing this in Bengaluru's interest.' He also mentioned that a press conference will be held in the next couple of days to provide clarity on matters like A Khata, B Khata, e-Khata campaigns, tax reforms, and civic administration plans. When questioned about the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), Shivakumar said, 'There are both supporters and critics of the SIT decision. The Home Minister is handling the matter and senior officials have been appointed to the SIT. The truth will come out after a thorough investigation.' Reacting to the opposition's claims that the SIT was formed to divert attention, he said, 'Whatever we do, the BJP finds a reason to oppose it. The media amplified the issue, and we respect the media's role in a democracy. Ensuring justice is a shared responsibility between the government and the press.' He confirmed that he and the Chief Minister will visit Delhi on July 25 and said that he does not have more details regarding Congress leader Randeep Surjewala's visit.

KOLKATA: SETTING the Trinamool Congress' strategy for the West Bengal Assembly elections in 2026, party chief Mamata Banerjee said on Monday that 'harassment' of Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states won't be tolerated and directed her party workers to launch a 'language movement' on July 27 which will continue till the polls are over. She also called for ousting the BJP-led government at the Centre after 2026. 'We will get more seats in 2026 and then Delhi will be our next target. We will have to remove the BJP from power,' she said, addressing the TMC's Martyrs' Day rally in Kolkata. 'Our fight for identity and language will continue till the BJP is defeated, in the state and at the Centre. From July 27, we will launch a language movement against the BJP's terrorism on Bengali language. The movement will start on Nanoor Divas in West Bengal, protesting attacks on Bengalis and will continue till Assembly polls next year,' she said.
