Jockey who won weight in champagne on ITV disqualified for breaking whip rules

Daily Mirror17-06-2025

Megan Jordan celebrated the biggest victory of her career in the Queen Mother's Cup at York on Saturday but was found to have used her whip too many times
A jockey who won her weight in champagne on ITV Racing has been disqualified for breaking the whip rules. The Queen Mother's Cup is one of the most prestigious races in the calendar for female amateur jockeys and a feature of Macmillan Charity Race Day at York.
Past winners include the Princess Royal, who rode Insular to victory on the Knavesmire in 1988. Saturday's renewal was contested by 12 runners ridden by some of the best amateur riders on the circuit.

The race was won by the Ben Brookhouse-trained My Dream World, ridden by Megan Jordan, who held off the late rally of Chillingham, ridden by Becky Smith. As part of the race's tradition the winning rider is presented with her weight in champagne during a weigh-in on the York podium.

During the race Jordan nearly came off when she lost an iron and also managed to catch her whip when it flew out of her hand. She told ITV Racing afterwards: 'It didn't quite go to plan but he's a lovely big horse and that probably helped me stay on. He looked after me when I needed him to.
'I just thought, 'Don't panic', and I was trying to reach down and catch the iron. My stick nearly went at one point but I thought come on and keep going.'
She continued: 'This is a race I've really wanted to win. It's only my second ever ride in it. Ben was very confident about him, he gave me a great feel the other day when I went and sat on him. I am very grateful to the connections.'
However Jordan's ride was referred to the BHA's Whip Review Committee by stewards who ruled she had struck My Dream World four times above the permitted level of six from approaching two furlongs out.
On Tuesday the committee announced: 'Taking into account that none of the uses were clearly and unequivocally for safety purposes, My Dream World was disqualified.

'Miss Jordan will be suspended for 14 days as follows: Friday 04, Saturday 05, Sunday 06, Thursday 10, Wednesday 16, Thursday 17, Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23, Thursday 24, Tuesday 29, Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31 June 2025, Wednesday 06 and Thursday 07 August 2025.'
The decision to refer Jordan was ridiculed by Jim McGrath, the former Channel 4 Racing pundit who works for Sky Sports Racing.

'Fascinating case for BHA's whip review committee re yesterday's York winner, My Dream World,' he said in a post on X.
'Used 9 times or 10 (heavens to murgatroyd!)? Each feeble tap delivered with all the strength of a junior disprin. Welfare issue- you're having a laugh. Come in Mr Bumble.'
Brookhouse said: "We will most likely appeal. We have blown the film up and slowed it down, and there is significant doubt whether one of them connected or not.
"Rules are rules, but they were flicks in the backhand position more than smacks in the forehand. She's a young girl who has had a traumatic experience. She said she hit the front too soon and the horses idled on his fifth or sixth start. I don't blame her."

Royal Ascot jockey banned and given significant fine after winning biggest race of his life

Royal Ascot jockey banned and given significant fine after winning biggest race of his life Gary Carroll was recently hit with a ban and fine by the British Horseracing Authority's Whip Review Committee after his win on Cercene in the Coronation Stakes Gary Carroll has been handed a 14-day ban (Image: Alan Crowhurst, Getty Images for Ascot Racecourse ) Leading jockey Gary Carroll, who recently rode Cercene to a shock 33-1 victory in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, is set to miss a key upcoming race. Carroll secured his first-ever Group 1 win as Cercene triumphed in the top-level 1m contest for three year old fillies, upsetting the heavily favoured Zarigana. This remarkable win also marked a milestone for Co Tipperary-based trainer Joseph G Murphy, as it was his first Group 1 win in 50 years of holding a licence, fulfilling a lifelong ambition. ‌ Following the win, Carroll said: "This is unbelievable. I have been riding a long time now and been placed in plenty of Group One races. ‌ "This is my first one and, if I was ever to ride a Group One winner, I wanted it to be for Joe Murphy. I have been riding for him since I was a 7lb claimer and he has been very good to me. I am delighted I can repay him. "Cercene ran a blinder at the Curragh, where the slow pace didn't suit. We went a bit better gallop there today. She got to the front a furlong and a half out and she waited. Then the French horse came and headed me. "To be fair to this one, she is not big, but she is very tough and stuck her head out for me. This is hugely satisfying. Group One races are so hard to come by, and good horses are very hard to come by. To do this at Royal Ascot is magic." Article continues below Jockey Carroll was a surprise victor aboard Cercene (Image: PA ) Since Cercene's triumph, Murphy has set out an ambitious plan for the filly, eyeing up a spot in the £426,000 Juddmonte Irish Oaks at the Curragh, reports the Mirror. The Breeders' Cup is also potentially on her agenda towards the year's end. Yet, unless he wins an appeal, Carroll will miss the Irish Oaks on July 19 due to a whip ban incurred. He was summoned before the BHA's Whip Review Committee following his ride in the Coronation Stakes, where the panel handed down both a suspension and a fine to Carroll. "Taking into account that this was a Class 1 race, the penalty in respect of the above permitted level was doubled. Therefore, he will be suspended for 14 days from Tuesday 08 – Monday 21 July 2025, inclusive and fined £5,800."

Jordan Henderson 'no longer suited' to Premier League as Rangers on transfer alert over ex Liverpool ace

The 35-year-old reportedly has a clause in his contract that will allow him to leave Ajax for free this summer Rangers-linked Jordan Henderson has been told that he is no longer 'suited' to the Premier League. Former Liverpool captain Henderson joined Ajax in January 2024 following a ill-fated six month stint with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettiifaq under his former Anfield teammate Steven Gerrard. ‌ However, the Amsterdam giants have fallen on harder times and missed out on the title for a second successive season last month when a sensational collapse in the penultimate match of the campaign handed the championship to rivals PSV Eindhoven. ‌ On Tuesday, reports emerged claiming that the 35-year-old has a clause in his contract at the Johan Cruyff Arena that will allow him to leave on a free transfer. The Premier League and Champions League winner has been linked with a move to top tier side Nottingham Forest while talk over a return to boyhood club Sunderland - who are back in the Premier League next season for the first time in nine years - has never gone away. Prior to Russell Martin's appointment at Ibrox, Henderson had been touted for a coaching role alongside old Liverpool pal Gerrard in Govan. And now both Forest been warned against signing the ageing star by talkSPORT presenter and Ipswich Town legend Alan Brazil. The former Scotland forward does however see a move back to Wearside as a more viable option for the England international. He said: "I don't want to have a go at Jordan. ‌ "Because Jordan, when he first went [to Liverpool], I think Kenny [Dalglish] bought him, when he first went to Anfield, people weren't that sure, and then he proved them wrong. "But he's 35 now, I think Forest... no. Not for me. He's had a brilliant career, not now. That'd be ideal for him, Sunderland. Play [for] Sunderland in the Premier League and enjoy it. "I'm not saying it's his last season, because he loves his football, but he'll probably go into coaching, won't he Sunderland's the perfect move for him." Horse goes berserk at Royal Ascot and kicks groundsman through railings

A groundsworker was the luckiest man at Royal Ascot on Saturday after he narrowly avoided being kicked in the head byQueen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes winner Lazzat. The Wathnan-owned sprinter displayed an impressive turn of pace to fend off the challenge of Satono Reve in a thrilling installment of the Group 1 race. Celebrations turned sour, however, when the four-year-old dumped jockey James Doyle to the turf after he appeared to have been unnerved by a cloth which was waved in his direction. Lazzat proceeded to turn and run down the track before he was cornered by staff who attempted to calm the situation. Instead, the horse lashed out with a violent kick that missed one groundsworker by a matter of inches. Such was the ferocity and shock nature of the kick, however, that the man in question was sent crashing through the railings. Reacting to the scary scenes live, ITV Racing pundit Jason Weaver shouted: 'The sheet! Oh no, he's had a howler with the sheet!' Minutes earlier Satono Reve was sent off the 2-1 favourite to become the first Japanese winner at the Royal meeting and was travelling powerfully throughout the contest in the hands of Joao Moreira. However, it was Jerome Reynier's Lazzat, who made every yard in the hands of Doyle, who stayed on strongest in the closing stages, striking on his first start for his new ownes at odds of 9-2 to continue a fine week for both his rider and owners. Lazzat was adding a second Group One win to his tally after landing last year's Prix Maurice de Gheest, but he had been beaten in Australia when sent on his travels at the end of the campaign. Reynier, saddling his first Royal Ascot winner, said: 'He did (win at the top level) as a three-year-old in the Maurice de Gheest in Deauville but after having been all the way to Australia and Hong Kong, I was a bit scared that it was going to be tough to find Lazzat the same as he was but obviously we have been trying him over a mile to open his options, but he's a pure sprinter and we will stick to the sprinting distances over the straight courses for his future. More Trending 'That was a pretty tough challenge (from Satono Reve). I've been watching all his races and he's always coming late and he's always running on but James had a really good feeling with the horse and when the Japanese came to him, he put his ears back and tried again and he said there was no way he was going to pass him today.' Paddy Power cut Lazzat to 7-2 favourite from 8-1 for the July Cup at Newmarket, but Reynier feels that is an unlikely option. He added: 'The July Cup is coming a little quickly I guess but maybe we'll defend his crown in the Maurice de Gheest, we've got the Sprint Cup and we can be back here in October because he can handle any ground, if the ground is heavy he can do it then as well. 'He's a very good champion. Today everything went right for once and we're happy to have a first Royal Ascot winner, especially for Wathnan and Nurlan Bizakov as a breeder. I'm very happy for the connections involved.'
