Jockeys hit by 32 days of whip bans after controversial Shergar Cup at Ascot races

The team competition attracted controversy after some of the riding was criticised by trainers and now officials have slapped four of the jockeys with suspensions The standard of jockeyship at the Shergar Cup is back in the spotlight after riders at last Saturday's meeting copped a whopping 32 DAYS of whip bans. ‌ William Haggas's wife and assistant Maureen, fresh from saddling Tenability to land the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Classic under Delphine Santiago, claimed the standard of rider at Ascot's international jockeys' event was 'noticeably lower than usual' – adding that there were 'one or two who maybe shouldn't be here'. ‌ And the British Horseracing Authority's Whip Review Committee were certainly less than impressed when it convened to hold the invitees' efforts up to the light on Tuesday. ‌ Chief offender was Hugh Bowman, who partnered supermare Winx to a world-record 25 Group 1 victories in his native Australia. The 45-year-old, who has ridden in Hong Kong since 2022, was handed a 12-day suspension for hitting Shergar Cup Challenge runner-up La Pulga seven times, not giving his mount time to respond and also applying the ProCush stick in the wrong place to the Charlie Johnston-trained six-year-old. The former colony's whip rules are significantly less severe than in Britain, where six strikes are permitted. With the punishments upheld in all major racing jurisdictions, Bowman will be sidelined from August 26 to September 6 inclusive. But Karis Teetan and Dario Di Tocco were also in hot water, being hit with eight-day sentences. ‌ Mauritian Teetan, also one of Hong Kong's top jockeys and like Bowman riding for Team Rest Of The World Team, will be sidelined from August 26 to September 2 for hitting third home Venture Capital seven times in the opening Shergar Cup Dash and also denying the 9-2 favourite time to respond. Team Europe's Di Tocco, Italy's two-time champion jockey and competing in the event for the first time, will be out of action for the same dates after being found guilty of the same offences aboard second home Team Player in the Shergar Cup Classic. Suraj Nerredu, who performed a flying dismount after landing the Shergar Cup Stayers aboard Fireblade, received four days (August 26 to 29 inclusive) for not giving Claymore time to respond en route to an eighth-place finish in the Shergar Cup Challenge. ‌ The acclaimed Indian rider captained newly formed Team Asia to a one-point Shergar Cup debut triumph. This year's Shergar Cup was tweaked and saw an end to the Ladies' team that had been part of the contest since its inception. It saw a move to more 'geographically based' teams representing Asia, Great Britain & Ireland, Europe and the Rest of the World Five of the 12 riders – Karis Teetan, Delphine Santiago, Katie Davis, Suraj Nerradu and Dario Di Tocco – were riding in Britain for the first time, while Ryusei Sakai, Mirai Iwata, Per-Anders Gråberg and Robbie Dolan have had fewer than two-dozen rides in Britain between them.

Colin Keane facing lengthy whip ban and missing ride on superstar Field Of Gold

Top Irish jockey Colin Keane could be hit with a lengthy ban having appeared to break stringent whip rules at Sandown on Friday afternoon. The Meath-born rider, recently appointed number one to powerful owners Juddmote, now faces the prospect of missing the ride on superstar colt Field Of Gold in the Group One Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood at the end of this month. The John Gosden-trained three-yeaar-old has been the horse of the year so far and will be expected to take his Group One haul to three races at the Glorious Goodwood Festival. Keane was highlighted by presenters on the Racing TV channel as having broken the whip rules when winning on Windlord for Juddmonte and trainer Andrew Balding. Keane, who was given the job as number one rider for Juddmonte early last month, looked to have used his whip eight times when landing the Listed Gala Stakes by a nose, which would be twice above the permitted level. His case will now go to the Whip Review Committee next week, but should the Trim man be found to have breached the rules he faces a ban of 14 days with penalties doubled for Class 1 races. If Keane received the maximum ban, he would also miss the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and the start of the Goodwood festival, but he may be free to ride on the final day of the meeting depending on when the dates of the ban are imposed. Keane's partnership with Field Of Gold has been one of the stories of the flat season, winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas and St Jame's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot in stunning fashion. The son of Kingman had controversially tasted defeat in the English 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, a race which infamously cost jockey Kieran Shoemark his job as number one to Juddmonte. The win on Windlord was the second part of a double for Juddmonte, Balding and Keane, who also won the 5f handicap with Kassaya. A 5-2 market leader on her first appearance since finishing down the field as favourite for the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot last summer, the half-sister to 2000 Guineas hero Chaldean was good value for the winning margin of three-quarters of a length.

Royal Ascot jockey banned and given significant fine after winning biggest race of his life

Carroll secured his first-ever Group 1 win as Cercene triumphed in the top-level 1m contest for three year old fillies, upsetting the heavily favoured Zarigana. This remarkable win also marked a milestone for Co Tipperary-based trainer Joseph G Murphy, as it was his first Group 1 win in 50 years of holding a licence, fulfilling a lifelong ambition. ‌ Following the win, Carroll said: "This is unbelievable. I have been riding a long time now and been placed in plenty of Group One races. ‌ "This is my first one and, if I was ever to ride a Group One winner, I wanted it to be for Joe Murphy. I have been riding for him since I was a 7lb claimer and he has been very good to me. I am delighted I can repay him. "Cercene ran a blinder at the Curragh, where the slow pace didn't suit. We went a bit better gallop there today. She got to the front a furlong and a half out and she waited. Then the French horse came and headed me. "To be fair to this one, she is not big, but she is very tough and stuck her head out for me. This is hugely satisfying. Group One races are so hard to come by, and good horses are very hard to come by. To do this at Royal Ascot is magic." The Breeders' Cup is also potentially on her agenda towards the year's end. Yet, unless he wins an appeal, Carroll will miss the Irish Oaks on July 19 due to a whip ban incurred. He was summoned before the BHA's Whip Review Committee following his ride in the Coronation Stakes, where the panel handed down both a suspension and a fine to Carroll. "Taking into account that this was a Class 1 race, the penalty in respect of the above permitted level was doubled. Therefore, he will be suspended for 14 days from Tuesday 08 – Monday 21 July 2025, inclusive and fined £5,800."

Jockey who won weight in champagne on ITV disqualified for breaking whip rules

Megan Jordan celebrated the biggest victory of her career in the Queen Mother's Cup at York on Saturday but was found to have used her whip too many times A jockey who won her weight in champagne on ITV Racing has been disqualified for breaking the whip rules. The Queen Mother's Cup is one of the most prestigious races in the calendar for female amateur jockeys and a feature of Macmillan Charity Race Day at York. Past winners include the Princess Royal, who rode Insular to victory on the Knavesmire in 1988. Saturday's renewal was contested by 12 runners ridden by some of the best amateur riders on the circuit. ‌ The race was won by the Ben Brookhouse-trained My Dream World, ridden by Megan Jordan, who held off the late rally of Chillingham, ridden by Becky Smith. As part of the race's tradition the winning rider is presented with her weight in champagne during a weigh-in on the York podium. ‌ During the race Jordan nearly came off when she lost an iron and also managed to catch her whip when it flew out of her hand. She told ITV Racing afterwards: 'It didn't quite go to plan but he's a lovely big horse and that probably helped me stay on. He looked after me when I needed him to. 'I just thought, 'Don't panic', and I was trying to reach down and catch the iron. My stick nearly went at one point but I thought come on and keep going.' She continued: 'This is a race I've really wanted to win. It's only my second ever ride in it. Ben was very confident about him, he gave me a great feel the other day when I went and sat on him. I am very grateful to the connections.' However Jordan's ride was referred to the BHA's Whip Review Committee by stewards who ruled she had struck My Dream World four times above the permitted level of six from approaching two furlongs out. On Tuesday the committee announced: 'Taking into account that none of the uses were clearly and unequivocally for safety purposes, My Dream World was disqualified. ‌ 'Miss Jordan will be suspended for 14 days as follows: Friday 04, Saturday 05, Sunday 06, Thursday 10, Wednesday 16, Thursday 17, Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23, Thursday 24, Tuesday 29, Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31 June 2025, Wednesday 06 and Thursday 07 August 2025.' The decision to refer Jordan was ridiculed by Jim McGrath, the former Channel 4 Racing pundit who works for Sky Sports Racing. ‌ 'Fascinating case for BHA's whip review committee re yesterday's York winner, My Dream World,' he said in a post on X. 'Used 9 times or 10 (heavens to murgatroyd!)? Each feeble tap delivered with all the strength of a junior disprin. Welfare issue- you're having a laugh. Come in Mr Bumble.' Brookhouse said: "We will most likely appeal. We have blown the film up and slowed it down, and there is significant doubt whether one of them connected or not. "Rules are rules, but they were flicks in the backhand position more than smacks in the a young girl who has had a traumatic experience. She said she hit the front too soon and the horses idled on his fifth or sixth start. I don't blame her."
