Leading jockey Gary Carroll, who recently rode Cercene to a shock 33-1 victory in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, is set to miss a key upcoming race.
Carroll secured his first-ever Group 1 win as Cercene triumphed in the top-level 1m contest for three year old fillies, upsetting the heavily favoured Zarigana. This remarkable win also marked a milestone for Co Tipperary-based trainer Joseph G Murphy, as it was his first Group 1 win in 50 years of holding a licence, fulfilling a lifelong ambition.

Following the win, Carroll said: "This is unbelievable. I have been riding a long time now and been placed in plenty of Group One races.

"This is my first one and, if I was ever to ride a Group One winner, I wanted it to be for Joe Murphy. I have been riding for him since I was a 7lb claimer and he has been very good to me. I am delighted I can repay him.
"Cercene ran a blinder at the Curragh, where the slow pace didn't suit. We went a bit better gallop there today. She got to the front a furlong and a half out and she waited. Then the French horse came and headed me.
"To be fair to this one, she is not big, but she is very tough and stuck her head out for me. This is hugely satisfying. Group One races are so hard to come by, and good horses are very hard to come by. To do this at Royal Ascot is magic."

Since Cercene's triumph, Murphy has set out an ambitious plan for the filly, eyeing up a spot in the £426,000 Juddmonte Irish Oaks at the Curragh, reports the Mirror. The Breeders' Cup is also potentially on her agenda towards the year's end.
Yet, unless he wins an appeal, Carroll will miss the Irish Oaks on July 19 due to a whip ban incurred. He was summoned before the BHA's Whip Review Committee following his ride in the Coronation Stakes, where the panel handed down both a suspension and a fine to Carroll.

The Committee's findings read: "Gary Carroll, the rider of the winner Cercene (IRE), was found to have used his whip twice above the permitted level of six from approximately two furlongs out.
"Taking into account that this was a Class 1 race, the penalty in respect of the above permitted level was doubled. Therefore, he will be suspended for 14 days from Tuesday 08 – Monday 21 July 2025, inclusive and fined £5,800."

Hotazhell in the mix for stellar renewal of Eclipse

The son of Too Darn Hot excelled as a juvenile, winning four times and ending the year with Group One honours when edging out Aidan O'Brien's Delacroix at Doncaster in the Futurity Trophy. After missing his intended return in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains on account of fast ground at ParisLongchamp, Hotazhell was a respectable third behind impressive winner Field Of Gold when making his belated reappearance in Classic company at the Curragh. Harrington is now keen to move up in distance for what could be a mouthwatering Eclipse – for which Ombudsman, Sosie, Camille Pissaro are all pencilled in – but would also have no issue forgoing a trip to Esher to wait for future battles if no rain arrives. 'At the moment the plan is to go to the Eclipse with Hotazhell,' said Harrington. 'We're just hoping the weather might break next week in England and we get some rain and the idea would be to go to the Eclipse, but the weather will dictate as we don't want firm ground. 'He could have gone to France this weekend for a Group Two (Prix Eugene Adam), but we might as well wait and there are also plenty of races in the autumn for him. 'He ran very well at the Curragh and that was his first run of the year and a mile and two will be fine for him.'

Connections looking to to see the real Falakeyah next time out

Having bolted up on her Wolverhampton debut in November, the Owen Burrows-trained filly looked every inch a top-class performer in the making when running away with Newmarket's Pretty Polly Stakes on her return to action in the spring. After sidestepping the Oaks at Epsom and being ruled out of the French equivalent, Falakeyah dropped back to a mile for the Coronation Stakes, but ended up racing too enthusiastically for her own good on the front end before weakening in the home straight. Angus Gold, racing manager for owners Shadwell, said: 'It was a pity, as I was very pleased with her before the race. She settled beforehand, I thought, she was good and calm in the ring and Jim (Crowley) said she went down brilliantly relaxed. 'I've only seen the replay once, but it looked to me like for the first 50 or 60 yards of the race she was OK and then when Hollie (Doyle, riding Duty First) came upsides her she just put her head in the air and took off basically. It just set her alight and that was it. 'On a hot day like that, she was never going to be able to keep going at that pace, so we'll just give her a bit of time. We didn't learn anything regarding distance or anything like that, all we learnt was she's not going to win races if she races like that.' He added: 'We know she's considerably better than that, her work at home is very high class and that run didn't bare any resemblance to her work at home. We'll obviously have to try to settle her next time and maybe we'll have a look at something like the Nassau. We'll just see how everyone feels nearer the time. 'At home she settles beautifully and is quite happy to take a lead and doesn't fight the jockey, so we've just got to get her to do that on the racecourse if she's going to have any chance of finishing off her races.'
