How F-35s became the new Tesla
From its base in Fort Worth, Texas, Lockheed Martin every year churns out roughly 150 of the state-of-the-art planes, which have quickly become the backbone of modern Western air forces.
As they are shipped out around the world, billions of dollars flow back into the US defence industry.
But the planes need more than computer chips and galvanised steel to get off the ground: they depend on trust between the US and its allies, which has rapidly drained after Donald Trump suggested he could annex Greenland or Canada, and fell out spectacularly with Ukraine's president Volodymyr Zelensky.
Countries are now asking if they can still rely on America – and F-35s look as if they could be caught in the crossfire.
Such is the anger at the US that some commentators are now comparing them to Teslas.
The electric vehicles looked like the cars of the future not so long ago, until they were boycotted for their association with the Trump administration via the company's chief executive, Elon Musk.
On Friday, Mr Trump poured salt in the wound as he suggested selling 'toned-down' jets to the US' allies, 'because someday they're not our allies, right?'
He was referring to a new generation of F-47 jets – but the aircraft is decades away, and the only immediate impact of his comments will be to shake Nato countries' faith in a United States that looks increasingly unreliable.
Allies are suddenly wary of relying on the US to supply the spare parts and software updates needed to keep their F-35s in the sky.
Some even believe the jets harbour a secret 'kill switch' that could be casually flicked on by a temperamental president, although this has been strenuously denied by Lockheed Martin.
It raises an awkward question for US allies: what's the point in having a fleet of the most advanced stealth fighter jets in the world if they won't be able to get it off the ground?
One former defence official told Defense One news and analysis website that Mr Trump's repeated outbursts about seizing Greenland, Canada or the Panama Canal made it 'very hard to see how they remain with the [F-35] programme'.
Canada, which was planning to buy dozens of the fighter jets, recently announced that it was examining 'other alternatives'.
Portugal also appears to be getting cold feet.
'The recent position of the United States, in the context of Nato... must make us think about the best options, because the predictability of our allies is a greater asset to take into account,' its defence minister Nuno Melo said this month.
Germany, too, is increasingly looking askance at F-35s.
Wolfgang Ischinger, former head of the Munich Security Conference, has suggested Berlin could cancel its orders after the US halted shipments of F-16 jets to Ukraine, following Mr Trump's disastrous Oval Office meeting with Mr Zelensky.
Europe, which once depended on the US for two-thirds of its military equipment, is now freezing out American companies and attempting to shift its reliance on Washington.
Experts believe France's aviation industry will be the big beneficiary of the backlash to F-35s, and Emmanuel Macron, the French president, is publicly talking up its Dassault Rafale jets.
Jon Hemler, an aerospace analyst, said that other options for US-sceptical nations include the Eurofighter Typhoon, the Saab Gripen, or South Korea's KF-21 – but noted that all of them mean 'sacrificing' advantages that the more-advanced F-35 can provide.
The response from US allies, which have collectively invested billions of dollars into the fighter jet programme, is stunning.
Membership of the elite club with access to the fifth-generation jets was once highly sought-after. It was a source of humiliation for Turkey when it was expelled in 2019 by Mr Trump for purchasing a Russian missile system.
Now some could turn their backs over persistent fears the aircraft is equipped with a 'kill switch' that could ground the jets.

The F-35 Joint Programme Office (JPO) strenuously denies that this exists, saying that it is 'built on strong partnerships with US allies and partner nations' and has always been a 'collaborative effort' that 'meets the operational needs of all its users'.
But Richard Aboulafia, a Washington-based aviation specialist, disagrees, arguing a kill-switch 'doesn't have to be a big red button'.
He told The Telegraph: 'Of course, there's a kill switch.
'Anything with software or internet connectivity has a kill switch. That's just the way it works – welcome to modern society.'
Software isn't the only potential issue – allies are also anxious about hardware.
F-35s belonging to Nato countries could be crippled if the US decided it would stop shipping over replacement parts needed to keep them airworthy.
'It's like if you're in the UK and you buy a US car,' said Mark Cancian, a senior adviser with the Centre for Strategic and International Studies.
'If the United States were to shut off the flow of parts, you could scavenge parts for a while – but eventually, your car is not going to be running very well. If you had a fleet of cars, fewer and fewer would run when you can't mobilise the other ones.'
Experts believe that even Israel, which has pushed for a degree of operational independence from the US, would not be able to keep its fleet running indefinitely without American-made parts.
The F-35 Joint Program Office said in a statement: 'The programme operates under well-established agreements that ensure all F-35 operators have the necessary capabilities to sustain and operate their aircraft effectively.
'The strength of the F-35 programme lies in its global partnership, and we remain committed to providing all users with the full functionality and support they require.'
Others are anxious about the US government's commitment to the F-35 programme after Mr Musk repeatedly suggested that its funding should be pulled.
While analysts are sceptical that the Pentagon would scrap the programme altogether, limiting its F-35 purchases would inflate prices for US allies.
In November, the Tesla chief executive tweeted criticisms of F-35s three times in the space of two days, attacking the planes as 'a jack of all trades, master of none', 'obsolete' and 'broken'.
Mr Musk, who has since been appointed the US government's efficiency tsar, said in one post: 'In the name of all that is holy, let us stop the worst military value for money in history that is the F-35 programme.'
But others believe that reports of the F-35's death have been greatly exaggerated.
Denmark, where politicians are now fretting about the fate of Greenland as Mr Trump's repeated annexation threats, has already had its fleet of fighter jets delivered.
And while many European countries are wobbling, both the Netherlands and Belgium have confirmed that they will keep buying them.
Britain's flagship Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier was built for the specific purpose of accommodating F-35s, meaning it is effectively being 'held hostage', according to Mr Aboulafia.
Analysts have also suggested that the US could look for new customers in the Middle East if it is spurned by Nato countries, opening up the programme to the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Douglas Birkey, head of the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies US think tank, believes the West simply does not have the luxury of a decade to secure another fifth-generation fighter jet.
'Planes like the F-35 are the price of winning in the modern era,' he told The Telegraph.
But trust between the US and its allies is breaking down, and the consequences could outlive the F-35 programme.
On Friday, US defence secretary Pete Hegseth announced that Boeing had won the contract to build the next-generation F-47s, declaring that America had sent a 'direct, clear message to our allies that we're not going anywhere'.
Whether those countries still want to follow where the US is leading, or strike out on their own, is another question.

By Jamie McGeever ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) -TRADING DAY Making sense of the forces driving global markets By Jamie McGeever, Markets Columnist Gnawing doubts about the frenzy around artificial intelligence weighed on tech shares again on Wednesday, pushing Wall Street into the red as investors cast a nervous eye toward a key speech from Fed Chair Jerome Powell on Friday. More on that below. In my column today, I look ahead to Powell's eighth and final Jackson Hole speech. If market moves following his previous seven are any guide, investors should be in for a bumpy ride. Investors are increasingly concerned about the involvement - or interference - from President Donald Trump and his administration in many aspects of the economy, private sector business, and independent policymaking. Trump on Wednesday called for Fed Governor Lisa Cook to resign over mortgage allegations, which could pave the way for another Trump appointee at the Fed inclined to lower interest rates. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, meanwhile, is said to be looking into the government taking equity stakes in Intel and other chipmakers in exchange for grants under the CHIPS Act. This comes on the heels of Trump's recent sideswipe at Goldman Sachs's CEO and chief U.S. economist, criticism of JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America, his firing of a senior statistics official, and months of verbal attacks on Powell for not cutting rates. * Tech fatigue. After leading Wall Street's charge this year to new peaks, U.S. tech shares are now losing steam and dragging broader indexes lower. Whether that's simply rotation and diversification, unease over the megacap concentration, or doubts about the huge AI spend, air is coming out of the tech balloon. The S&P 500 tech sector is down nearly 5% in the last five trading days. But a bit of perspective is required - the sector rallied 60% between April 7 and August 13. * Fed minutes. With just two days to go until Powell's last Jackson Hole speech, investors on Wednesday had the minutes of the Fed's July 29-30 policy meeting to pore over. The minutes appear to show that the two policymakers who dissented against the central bank decision to leave rates unchanged appear not to have been joined by others in voicing support for lowering rates at that meeting. "Almost all participants viewed it as appropriate to maintain the target range for the federal funds rate at 4.25% to 4.50% at this meeting," the minutes read. Maybe the bar to cutting rates is higher than thought? But bear in mind, the weak July payrolls data were released two days after that decision. Jackson Hole speech could pack a punch Financial markets are taking in a collective breath ahead of Powell's eighth and final keynote Jackson Hole speech as Federal Reserve chair. If the moves following his last seven are any guide, investors should buckle up for a bumpy ride. Fed-watchers will be focused squarely on whether Powell signals that he's willing to cut interest rates at the central bank's September 16-17 meeting. His public comments in recent months have been relatively hawkish, but those were all before the release of the weak July employment figures that fired up easing expectations. Rates futures traders are pricing in an 85% probability of a quarter-point cut next month, with another 25 basis points of easing expected by year's end. Powell's words on Friday could provide significant clarity about whether these positions are "in the money" or not. Given that traders are betting so heavily on an imminent move, the "pain trade" will be if Powell holds the line that policymakers need to see more incoming data before resuming the easing cycle put on hold in December. Investors have reason to be cautious. History shows Powell's Jackson Hole speeches tend to move markets a lot, especially the bond market. And even though Powell is often considered a policy dove at heart, his Jackson Hole set-piece speeches have usually pushed yields higher, not lower. WATCH BOND YIELDS In the month following each of Powell's last seven Jackson Hole speeches, the 10-year Treasury yield has risen by an average of 21 bps, according to Reuters calculations. The dollar has risen 1.4% and the S&P 500 has fallen nearly 2%, on average, over the same period. Stretching that out, the S&P 500 has risen an average of 2.3% between the late-August speech and year-end, the dollar has gained 0.4%, while the 10-year yield has climbed 27 basis points on average. But these averages mask some much bigger moves, especially in the month after the central bank jamboree in Wyoming. The stand-out example is 2022, when Powell, in his Monetary Policy and Price Stability speech, invoked former Fed Chair Paul Volcker, warning of the "pain" that households and businesses were likely to face from the tight policy needed to slay inflation. In the following month, the S&P 500 tanked 12%, the dollar rallied 5%, and the 10-year Treasury yield soared 75 bps. Bond yields climbed at least 20 bps in the month following three other Powell Jackson Hole speeches, in 2018, 2021, and 2023, the latter being another where Powell signaled a readiness to keep rates higher for longer. KEY CONSIDERATIONS Inflation today is not as lofty as it was two years ago, but, sitting around 1 percentage point above the Fed's 2% goal, it is higher than Powell would like. Meanwhile, on the other side of the Fed's dual mandate, unemployment remains at a historical low of 4.2%. This year's theme at Jackson Hole is "Labor Markets in Transition: Demographics, Productivity, and Macroeconomic Policy." Powell has stated that the unemployment rate is the best measure of the labor market. But that does not mean today's low unemployment rate will automatically lead to a hawkish speech - history shows that when unemployment starts to rise, it can move quickly, leaving the Fed woefully behind the curve. Markets are probably prepared for some large price swings, whichever way Powell leans. THE LAST TIME It's also likely that Powell will use the platform to defend his tenure, just like his predecessors: Alan Greenspan in 2005, Ben Bernanke in 2012, and Janet Yellen in 2017. Given the unprecedented public pressure Trump has placed on Powell to cut interest rates this year, why would the Fed chair not seize this opportunity to have his say? "He may offer some soft guidance that rates may move lower at a coming meeting. But this is his last speech at Jackson Hole. He may never again have a platform this influential to offer his view of how his history should be written," economists at UBS wrote on Friday. Will he sign off with a bang? Trump Paintings Multiply on White House Walls as Other Presidents' Portraits Get Moved. See What's Been Added
A White House official said there are more Trump portraits to come amid controversy over the president's decision to move Barack Obama's official portrait to a hidden stairwell President Donald Trump is hanging even more portraits of himself around the White House. This week, a new painting of the president was revealed on social media. Longtime Trump ally Sebastian Gorka, who is currently serving as deputy assistant to the president and senior director for counterterrorism, shared a photo on X of the artwork, which shows Trump walking forward, his hands tucked into a long dark coat, flanked by rows of American flags. "One of the new @WhiteHouse paintings of President @realDonaldTrump," Gorka captioned the post. "More to come." Another new addition to the White House art collection was shared in May by New York Times White House correspondent Shawn McCreesh. McCreesh posted a photo to X of a portrait depicting Trump with late Republican Presidents Ronald Reagan and Abraham Lincoln looking over his shoulder, which he said was spotted "on the walls of the West Wing." Trump showed off another recent painting of himself, the one pictured above, while posing for a photo with European leaders during a Ukraine summit at the White House on Monday, Aug. 18. White House communications adviser Margo Martin shared a video on X of Trump pointing out the artistic depiction of his July 2024 assassination attempt, which she called his "Butler 'Fight, Fight, Fight' painting." The painting, which has hung in the White House since April, shows him raising his fist while surrounded by Secret Service agents after a bullet grazed his ear at a rally in Butler, Pa.. "That was not a great day!" Trump joked to the group. Other additions to the White House walls during Trump's second term have included an unorthodox painting of Trump's face overlaid with an American flag — which was crammed in between portraits of two former first ladies — as well as a new presidential portrait that bears a striking resemblance to his August 2023 mug shot. A framed New York Post cover showing his actual mug shot was also spotted on a wall just outside the Oval Office. The latest Trump artwork revealed by Gorka comes just a week after a White House official confirmed to PEOPLE that the president had broken precedent to move Barack Obama's official portrait out of public view. White House tradition says that the two most recent presidential portraits should hang prominently on either side of the Grand Foyer for members of the public to appreciate during tours and events. Since President Joe Biden's White House portrait has not yet been completed, the two most recent portraits are of Obama and George W. Bush. Back in April, the president swapped Obama's portrait with the "Fight, Fight, Fight" assassination attempt painting. Now, Obama's portrait has been moved even further from public view, to the top of the Grand Staircase. The stairwell, which leads up to the president's private living area, is off-limits to visitors and partially obstructed from public view. CNN reported that Obama's portrait in particular is "firmly out of view" for visitors. Insiders also told the outlet that Trump signs off on nearly all aesthetic changes to the White House, no matter how small. A spokesperson for Obama declined to comment on the recent change. The portraits aren't the only major change that Trump has made since taking office for a second time. He's also come under fire from critics for his gaudy makeover of the Oval Office. An April report in The Wall Street Journal revealed that the president had enlisted his "gold guy," cabinetmaker John Icart, to create golden borders for his political portraits, gilded carvings for the fireplace mantel and a gold Trump crest in a doorway. Musician Jack White slammed the Oval Office's new look in an Instagram rant following Trump's Aug. 18 meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. "Look at how disgusting Trump has transformed the historic White House," White wrote. "It's now a vulgar, gold-leafed and gaudy, professional wrestler's dressing room. Can't wait for the UFC match on the front lawn too, he's almost fully achieved the movie 'Idiocracy.' DC National Guard, Police Spark Debate Over Trump Plan
I'm sure you've been hearing all week about President Donald Trump's federalization of law enforcement in Washington, DC. We wrote about Trump's press conference in which he announced his administration's plan. "I'm announcing a historic action to rescue our nation's capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor. And worse. This is Liberation Day in DC, and we're gonna take our capital back," he said. "Under the authorities vested in me as the president of the United States, I'm officially invoking Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act — you know what that is — and placing the DC Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control," he went on. "Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged-out maniacs, and homeless people. And we're not gonna let it happen anymore. We're not gonna take it," Trump said. The police and National Guard hit the streets almost immediately. The BuzzFeed Community did not hold back in the comments section of our reporting, and people had some pretty strong feelings about all of this.
