Music composer AR Rahman and the makers of Ponniyin Selvan 2 have been directed by the Delhi High Court to deposit ₹ 2 crore in connection with a copyright lawsuit over the Junior Dagar brothers' classical rendition of Shiv Stuti. In 2023, singer Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar moved court against Rahman and the production company Madras Talkies in the matter.
In an interim order passed on April 25, Justice Prathiba M Singh observed that from a listener's perspective, Rahman's song Veera Raja Veera was "not just inspired but is, in fact, identical" to Shiva Stuti.
Acknowledging the contribution of the late Junior Dagar Brothers, the court also ordered the film to include a special credit slide for all OTT and online platforms where the film is available. It also granted ₹ 2 lakh to their family in recognition of their work.
"In the ultimate analysis, therefore, this court holds that the impugned song is not merely based on or inspired by the suit composition Shiva Stuti but is, in fact, identical to the suit composition with mere change in lyrics. The adding of other elements may have rendered the impugned song more like a modern composition but the basic underlying musical work is identical," the court said.
Son of Faiyazuddin Dagar and nephew of Zahiruddin Dagar, Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar mentioned in their lawsuit that he held the copyright in all original compositions of Junior Dagar Brothers, including Shiv Stuti. He alleged that although Veera Raja Veera contains different lyrics, 'its taal, beat, and musical structure are identical' to Shiv Stuti.
'Hence the defendant's composition infringes the complainant's rights in Shiva Stuti. The defendants -- Mr Rahman, Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions -- shall deposit ₹ 2 crore with the court and the same shall be kept in a fixed deposit, subject to the final outcome of the lawsuit,' the HC also said as per a PTI report.
Faiyaz sought a permanent injunction restraining Rahman and Madras Talkies, from using the song, damages, and the acknowledgement of moral rights.

Thug Life advance booking: Kamal Haasan's film to open with ₹12.46 cr, 2 lakh+ tickets sold despite Karnataka blockage

Thug Life advance booking: Kamal Haasan's film Thug Life is ready to debut on Thursday despite no show across Karnataka. The actor recently found himself at the centre of a controversy, which led to the film being blocked from release in the state. However, the film is set to see a decent opening day. However, missing out on the Karnataka circuit is undoubtedly going to cost Kamal Haasan who is also jointly backing the film. According to film industry tracker Sacnilk, Thug Life has collected a gross of ₹ 5.02 crore from ticket sales in all languages. The film will be out in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu languages. It will also be available in IMAX 2D format. Considering all formats, Kamal Haasan's film has so far sold 2,95,456 tickets for 10,678 shows across India, excluding Karnataka. Considering blocked seats, Thug Life is set to see a massive opening with ₹ 12.46 crore gross earnings. The film is set to clash with Sajid Nadiawala's Housefull 5 which has now generated way less money from advance booking. The movie is likely to premiere with ₹ 5.67 crore gross earnings. While Karnataka is out of the picture for Thug Life, states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, followed by Gujarat, top the list with maximum revenue from the advance booking for the first day in all versions. Thug Life is a gangster action drama film, directed by Mani Ratnam. It is co-written by Kamal Haasan, who is also jointly producing the film under his banner Raaj Kamal Films International. Madras Talkies and Red Giant Movies are also backing the film. Besides Kamal Haasan, it also features Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, Rohit Saraf and Baburaj. The film marks the reunion of Haasan and Ratnam after they collaborated on their 1987 film, Nayakan. The film landed in controversy after Haasan said, "Kannada was born out of Tamil' during the film event. Predicting the fate of the film amid the row, film trade insider Ramesh Bala posted on X, formerly Twitter, 'The anticipation is huge for the biggest film of the year #ThugLife. The promotional material impressed everyone. We can expect, solid action and Phenomenal performances from leads #KamalHaasan, #SilambarasanTR, #Trisha, #JojuGeorge & others. With themes rumored to explore action, identity, and rebellion, #ThugLife is expected to be more than just a commercial entertainer. Excited for tomorrow.' However, trade analyst Sumit Kadel claimed underwhelming numbers for the Thug Life Hindi version. He wrote, 'Advance booking for #KamalHaasan's #ThugLife is underwhelming in the Hindi belt, with current projections indicating a Day 1 opening in the ₹ 80L–1Cr range across North India. The film has just Thursday to register any meaningful biz before #Housefull5 takes over the bulk of showcasing from Friday.'

Thug Life: Tamil Nadu Govt Allows Early Morning Release Amid Kamal Haasan's Language Row

Last Updated: 'Thug Life' is a joint production of Raaj Kamal Films International and Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies, and will be distributed by Red Giant Movies. The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday granted permission to the makers of 'Thug Life', the much-anticipated film by veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam and superstar Kamal Haasan, to hold special early morning screenings on the day of its release — Thursday, June 5. The decision was made following a formal request submitted by Raaj Kamal Films International, Kamal Haasan's production house backing the movie. According to the government's order, the film will be allowed to have five shows on the day of release, with the first show beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday and the last one concluding by 2 a.m. on Friday. Special screenings outside the standard time slots are typically granted to big-budget or high-profile films in Tamil Nadu, particularly when led by popular stars or renowned filmmakers. The announcement, however, comes at a time when 'Thug Life' is facing controversy over a statement made by Kamal Haasan during the film's audio launch. The actor-politician claimed that 'Kannada is born out of Tamil," a remark that sparked strong reactions in Karnataka. The Karnataka High Court recently suggested that Kamal issue an apology, but the star has refused to do so. However, the superstar wrote a letter to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday stating that the row over his remarks on the origins of the Kannada language is a result of a misunderstanding. In his letter, Kamal Haasan also maintained that he is against the dominance of one language over another. As a result of the actor's refusal to issue an outright apology, the film's release in Karnataka has been postponed indefinitely. Despite the controversy, 'Thug Life' is one of the most anticipated Tamil films of the year. The project marks the reunion of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after nearly four decades, following their legendary 1987 collaboration 'Nayakan', considered a milestone in Indian cinema. The gangster drama features a star-studded cast, including Silambarasan T.R. in a key role, alongside Trisha, Nasser, Joju George, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sanya Malhotra, and Ali Fazal. The music for the film has been composed by Academy Award-winner A.R. Rahman, further adding to the excitement around the release. 'Thug Life' is a joint production of Raaj Kamal Films International and Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies, and will be distributed by Red Giant Movies. With high expectations from fans and film critics alike, the movie's performance at the box office — particularly in Tamil Nadu — will be closely watched as it hits the screens tomorrow.
