Beaufort rally lays five demands to end bullying

By: Ahmad Apong Text Size: BEAUFORT: The Solidariti Aman Beaufort organisers will submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's office calling for immediate action to eliminate the culture of bullying in schools. Its Organising Chairman Mohammad Norizhuan Awang said this during a peaceful solidarity rally attended by some 15,000 people in Bandar Minggo on Saturday, calling for justice for Zara Qairina.
Advertisement 'We express our deepest empathy to Zara's family, especially her mother and affirm our commitment to ending the bullying culture starting now,' Mohd Norizhuan said. The memorandum outlines five key demands to the government: First, for amendments to the Education Act 1996 to include specific anti-bullying provisions with clear definitions of physical, mental and cyber bullying, along with appropriate punishments based on severity levels. Second, collaboration between the Education Ministry, Health Ministry and Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to establish mandatory anti-bullying education modules in all primary and secondary schools. Third, for Independent School Bullying Prevention Committees in each state involving NGOs, parents and psychology experts to regularly monitor and audit bullying cases. Fourth, that serious bullying cases be referred to the police rather than handled solely through internal school mechanisms; and Fifth, demand the provision of child-friendly emergency anti-bullying hotlines that are easily accessible to students. 'We urge authorities not to disappoint our hopes and those of all Malaysians. Zara's case should be given top priority until it is resolved fairly and completely,' Mohammad Norizhuan said. The rally featured speeches by NGO representatives, poetry recitations and a Solidarity Pledge. Motorcyclist killed, pillion rider critically injured in Tuaran crash

District police chief Supt Noraidin Ag Maidin said the Yamaha 15ZR ridden from Kota Kinabalu towards Tuaran collided with the rear side of a Perodua Alza at 5.55am before hitting a concrete barrier. Advertisement Mohd Azli suffered severe head and body injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, while his 26-year-old pillion rider from Lawas, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Tuaran Hospital. The Alza driver, 50, was unhurt. Johor MB urges public to act against bullying, promotes use of complaint channels
JOHOR BAHRU: Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has urged the public to take a proactive role in tackling bullying by using official complaint platforms to report incidents. He said every report lodged could help save lives and protect the future of children affected by bullying. 'If you see, hear or experience bullying, don't stay silent. Use the 24-hour hotline provided by the Education Ministry's Bullying Complaint System at 03-8884 9325 or WhatsApp 014-800 9325,' he said in a Facebook post today. For kindergarten and preschool cases, complaints can be made via Talian Kasih at 15999 or WhatsApp 019-261 5999 under the Social Welfare Department (JKM), he added. Onn Hafiz said the Johor government is heeding the royal call by Regent of Johor Tunku Mahkota Ismail to stamp out bullying through stricter enforcement and ensure schools remain safe spaces for students. He stressed that bullying is not merely a disciplinary issue but a social crime with potentially devastating consequences, including trauma, family breakdown and societal instability. 'All schools and hostels must be ensured to be safe zones, free from bullying, supported by stronger counselling services and greater public awareness. Reporting mechanisms must be accessible to empower victims to come forward,' he said. Earlier today, Onn Hafiz accompanied Tunku Mahkota Ismail on a visit to a Standard Four pupil at KPJ Puteri Specialist Hospital. The student reportedly suffered a concussion and memory loss after being bullied at a school in Skudai. – Bernama
