Historic Indo-Pak war tank ‘Shivashakti' installed in Ranebennur
Haveri: The T-55 tank installed in Ranebennur highlights Indian military history. The Haveri district administration installed a historic Indo-Pak war tank, T-55, in Ranebennur on the 79th Independence Day at the Ranebennur taluk office premises. The tank was unveiled under the leadership of MLA Prakash Koliwad through the MLA grant. Belonging to the assault regiment of the Indian Army , the tank was collected from the Kirkee Central Army Fighting Vehicle Depot in Pune, Maharashtra. According to Indian Army sources, the T-55 tank, procured from Russia during the Indo-Pak war for the Bangla liberation in 1971, played a pivotal role in aiding Indian soldiers to achieve victory in their missions. Named Shiva Shakti, the tank served as the main battle tank between 1966 and 1977 and was intended to have a lifespan of 15 years with one midlife overhaul as per the prevailing policy. The necessity for armoured fighting vehicles was identified by the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War in 1965, leading the Indian govt to approach European countries for the supply of battle tanks. According to sources in the Indian Army, the legacy of the T-55 tank has had a significant impact on Indian military history. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Introduced to the Indian Army in the mid-1960s, the T-55 medium battle tank quickly gained a reputation as one of the most advanced tanks globally at the time. During the decisive 1971 Indo-Pakistani war, these Soviet-designed tanks served as the backbone of India's armoured capabilities. In key battles such as Garibpur and Nainakot, Indian T-55s destroyed Pakistan's M-24 Chaffee and M-47/M-48 model tanks without any losses. Additionally, they demonstrated dominance in the famous Battle of Basantar, breaking through enemy defences and capturing strategic positions. Their powerful 100mm main gun, reliability, and battlefield superiority provided Indian armoured units with a decisive advantage. The induction of the T-55 transformed India's armoured capabilities and left an indelible mark on modern Indian military history. Its installation in Ranebennur is expected to attract historians, students, and tourists, enhancing the city's cultural and educational prestige.
