Police across US issue warnings about ‘senior assassin' game: What is it?
Usually played by departing high-school seniors, the game tasks students with seeking out their fellow seniors and eliminating them from play by attacking them with squirt guns or other toy weapons.
'You are assigned a target and you have to go get your target out with a water gun, and there's also someone targeting you,' Carter Lennie, a student in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, told Nexstar's WGN of the rules.
Those who take the game too far, however, can end up injuring themselves or their friends, officials say.
Students deliberately short-circuiting school laptops as part of social media trend
Isaac Leal, a 17-year-old high school student in Texas, suffered a serious injury just last month after reportedly hanging from the back of another student's Jeep while playing the game, police in Arlington confirmed to Nexstar. Leal's mother told Dallas' KXAS the driver reversed her vehicle and drove away with Leal still on the back.
'She hit a dip and that's where I was told, allegedly, he flew off the Jeep and hit his head,' Raquel Vasquez, Leal's mother, told the outlet.
Leal was still fighting for his life this week, KXAS reported.
Carrying a toy weapon — even one that may appear to be an obvious toy up close — can also cause concern among residents who live in the communities where these games are played. Police departments across the country have reported an influx of calls from concerned citizens reporting armed strangers on their property. Law enforcement officials in Utah said last month that some of these citizens had armed themselves after seeing an unknown, seemingly gun-toting figure wandering near their home. (Students have been known to play both on-campus and off.)
In February, one teenager in Florida was even shot by an off-duty cop while holding a water pistol in a Nassau County homeowner's yard, NewsNation reported. The teen is expected to recover, police said.
There have also been reports of students equipping themselves with not just water guns, but with toy guns designed to fire gel- or water-based pellets.
'While these gel projectiles may seem harmless, they can cause serious injury,' a sergeant with the Fort Lupton Police Department in Colorado said this month, per Nexstar's KDVR. 'Even more troubling is that I personally witnessed high school students today hanging out of moving car windows and shooting other students on public roadways.'

Participants can also get themselves into legal trouble, depending how — and where — they play. Another student in Utah is facing a terrorism charge after allegedly charging into a hospital with a Nerf gun while chasing a classmate, Nexstar's KTVX reported earlier this month. Police said the incident nearly prompted a lockdown of the facility, according to the station.
To minimize risks of injury or arrest, police in jurisdictions across the country have issued warnings or guidance for participants, telling them to use only brightly colored toy weapons, and to stay away from school grounds and private property.
Police are also urging participants to carefully consider their actions and behavior while playing the game, and decide if the game's reward — which may be cash, a prize, or just bragging rights — are worth putting themselves in physical danger or legal trouble.
'We hope that parents can speak with their kids about the dangers of this game and the possible consequences,' one police department in Massachusetts advised, after a student was recently seen waving a toy gun from a moving car.
'While we understand this game is for fun, we want to remind the public that this game must be played responsibly and that it will result in a police response when we receive calls of this nature.'

Licking County crash near Granville kills Newark man, injures two people
A Newark man is dead and two others suffered injuries in a crash near Granville in Licking County, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. The crash happened at 6:56 p.m. Aug. 19, on State Route 661 between Smoketown Road and Lake Fork Road, a highway patrol lieutenant said. A northbound Honda Civic on State Route 661 left the right side of the road before returning and crossing the center line into southbound lanes, the highway patrol said. A Jeep wrangler driving south on State Route 661 swerved to avoid the Honda, but the vehicles collided, according to the highway patrol. The Honda overturned, ejecting two occupants. The Jeep struck a mailbox at the side of the road. William Coss, 46, of Newark, died at the scene, the highway patrol said. A 37-year-old Newark woman was transported to Licking Memorial Hospital with "life-threatening" injuries. A highway patrol lieutenant said Coss and the woman were in the Honda, but it wasn't clear which one of them was driving because they were ejected. Investigators collected evidence from the Honda's interior to determine who was in the driver's seat, the lieutenant said. EMS treated and released the Jeep driver, a 55-year-old woman from Newark, at the scene, according to the highway patrol. Beloved Florida Keys fishing captain killed after road rage dispute near Orlando
A well-known Florida Keys charter fishing captain was fatally shot near Orlando late last week following what police say appears to be an argument with another man over traffic. Joseph Hall, Jr., 43, was pronounced dead at HCA Lake Monroe Hospital in Sanford around 5:45 p.m. Thursday night. Just minutes earlier, witnesses told police they saw another man, 24-year-old Jaden Harris, running after Hall at an apartment building parking lot with a handgun and shooting at him several times. Harris, who stayed at the scene, told Sanford police officers that he was driving his white BMW sedan behind Hall's Jeep Gladiator on South Mangoustine Avenue, and that Hall was driving very slowly. Harris told cops he passed Hall, who reacted by acting like he was going to use his Jeep to hit the BMW, according to his arrest report. Harris told police he followed Hall to try taking a picture of his license plate. When they arrived at a Stop sign at West Seminole Boulevard and Mangoustine Avenue, Hall rolled his window down and called him an expletive for a female body part. Harris followed Hall as he made a left turn onto West Seminole Boulevard. Hall pulled into the apartment complex on Marbella Lane, Harris told police. There, Harris told police Hall blocked the parking lot exit with his Jeep and got out of the vehicle, approaching the BMW, according to the report. As Hall got closer to the BMW, Harris let him know that 'had it on him,' meaning his gun, according to the report. He said Hall 'lunged' toward the car, and that's when he fired his first shot, the report states. Per the arrest report, when the first officer arrived and found Harris standing by his car, the cop asked him if he was the one who shot Hall. He responded, 'I had to because he was blocking me in,' the report states. After detectives asked Harris to tell them more about what was said before he opened fire, he told them he wanted an attorney, so they stopped questioning him, according to the report. Based on what witnesses told police, what Harris told them, and after viewing security camera footage from the apartment building, officers arrested him on a charge of second-degree murder. The footage did not capture the shooting, but shows Harris' BMW rolling backwards before he catches up to it and puts the car in park. This corroborates what witnesses say, that he got out of the car and kept firing, according to the report. Detectives said Harris 'had several opportunities to disengage from pursuing Joseph but maliciously continued instead. Based on Jaden's post Miranda interview, he never stated that at the time of the incident he was ever in fear for his life.' Detectives also note in the report that neither Harris nor the witnesses ever said Hall was armed. 'Joseph did not cause Jaden any injury or harm to him that would justify the use of deadly force,' the report states. A judge ordered Harris held without bond until his scheduled Oct. 7 arraignment, according to Seminole County court records. News of Hall's death hit the Upper Keys community hard after his wife, Devi, with whom he shares two children, posted about it via Facebook on Saturday. 'He was full of life, laughter, and love, and I am so grateful for every moment we had together,' she wrote. Hall owned and captained the 65-foot Sailors Choice Party Fishing Boat as well as the Anglers Choice sportfishing charter boat, both based out of the mile marker 99.7 oceanside marina in Key Largo. Tributes from loyal customers, crew and colleagues have continued to pour in to the Sailors Choice Facebook page since Hall's death. 'We are so deeply sorry for your loss. Captain Joe touched the lives of many with his kindness, passion, and love for the water. He had a gift for making everyone feel welcome and for creating memories that families will cherish forever.
