
Miri court fines Penang mule account owner RM500 for possessing illegally obtained funds
MIRI (June 17): The Magistrates' Court here today fined a mule account owner RM500, in default one week in jail, for possessing money obtained through unlawful means five years ago.
Magistrate Ashok Linggam imposed the fine on Megeruben, 29, of Ayer Itam, Penang, after he pleaded guilty to a charge framed under Section 37(1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance Sarawak 1958.
The Section, typically applied in cases where an individual is found in possession of property or money reasonably suspected to have been obtained unlawfully, provides for up to three months' imprisonment or a fine of RM500 upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, Megeruben was found to be in possession of RM810 in his banking account, which had been unlawfully obtained.
When questioned by the police, he failed to explain how he obtained the money.
He committed the offence at a commercial bank branch here, at around 2.28pm on Feb 4, 2020.

Datuk denies cheating in alleged 'Dato' title scam

KOTA KINABALU (July 24): A businessman pleaded not guilty in a Sessions Court here today to three charges of cheating in connection with the acquisition of an honorary 'Dato'' title. Datuk Ling How Ee, 40, entered his plea before judge Jason Juga, who had the charges read to him in Mandarin. Ling is accused of dishonestly inducing a man to transfer RM2,500, RM500, and RM3,000 into his bank account for the purported purchase of gold accessories for ceremonial attire, and to assist in securing a 'Dato'' title from Pahang, despite having no authority to do so. The alleged offences took place at a bank branch here on April 19, April 20 and May 17, 2023. All the charges fall under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of imprisonment between one and ten years, whipping, and a fine upon conviction. The court set September 3 for pre-trial case management. Ling was granted bail of RM10,000 with a RM3,000 deposit and one local surety. Additional conditions imposed included reporting to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) once every two months, surrendering his passport to the court (if any), and refraining from contacting or interfering with prosecution witnesses. He was represented by counsel Ngui Kuang Kee @ George Ngui. Ling was arrested on July 2 after giving a statement at the Sabah MACC Office.

Man charged with raping underage teen at swiftlet birdhouse in Niah

No plea was recorded from Pui Yong Fock, 31, who nodded in understanding after the charges under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code were read to him in Mandarin by a court interpreter. The Section provides for up to 20 years' imprisonment and whipping, upon conviction. Pui, from Sungai Rait, Jalan Bakam, was charged with committing the offence against a 15-year-old girl on July 12, July 16, and July 17, each at around 1am at the same location along Jalan Niah-Bintulu. Magistrate Ashok Linggam set Aug 19 for further mention of the case at the Sessions Court following an application by deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Asymawi Ghazali. The court also denied the accused bail and ordered him to be further remanded pending the date.

MCMC Goes After TikTok User Who Posted Insensitive Content On PM
A TikTok user is under investigation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for allegedly uploading two pieces of highly offensive and false content involving Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim. According to MCMC, the posts were believed to be reactions to the Prime Minister's statements on immoral parties held in the country and recent incentive announcements for the rakyat. The same individual is also suspected of uploading another post containing extreme and baseless claims regarding the Prime Minister's official overseas trip.
